I just found this and I usually have mine like they say at first, but I'm going to give the new way a try out next time I'm in the car.
Thought you might like to see this. What do you think? Which is the "correct" or "best" method to use?

I just wondering if I could tap into some Honest John motoring brains .
I am a Irish Republic citizen but I am going to college in Belfast in September . I just wanted to know does anyone know if its possible to purchase a new UK car and insure the car from my college address in Belfast. What documents would I require to do this . Also when your buying a new car does the dealer sort out the motor tax or do I need to send it of . Do I just pay for it and send it of to the Belfast office or they require further documentation eg utility bills etc from my uk address. Also what month do UK car registration 2007 start. Is it in January if so what would car registered in September have on it "06 or 66"
Cheers in advance for any help.

The pre-tax cars sold in Eire are less expensive than Mainland UK Cars - hence some cars sold in the UK are imports from Eire. Often people in NI buy in the South, bring it North and regsiter it in NI. However the Special Offers from NI dealers differ from the UK as a whole so it might be worth looking at what offers are on in NI for brand new cars.
As Insurance costs are Very High in both NI and the South many NI offers can include insurance. These offers can distort the price of nearly new cars in the NI market.
I doubt if the taxation people will accept halls of residence as registration address but they will not know if a privately rented flat is just a temporary address.
Hi all, i'm writing this on behalf of my girlfriend and i'm hoping someone can help us out here.
Right here goes, we had to replace the drivers side lock and we successfully did that but when it came to putting it all back together the lock is very loose when you view it from the outside/insert key.
We tried everything to tighten it up from the inside but we are at a complete loss.
The car goes in for it's MOT next week so we really need to sort this.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Glad to be of help...
I have a problem with a Daewoo Lanos 1.4, 1999. It started misfiring and the engine management light came on.
Further inspection revealed no spark on 2 & 3. I have replaced the coil pack but there is no change.
I tried to get a diagnostic check done but apparantly there is no plug!
Would you suggest replacing the ecu?

have you found out any more information then markandchrissie?? or did you source an ecu?
Hi Guys,
My son's 1994 Corrado 2.0 16v has an intermittent problem with the cooling fan. It sometimes seems to be rubbing against something, although I can't quite see what so far. This doesn't happen all the time it's operating - just now and again. Son also tells me that on one or two occasions there has been a noise that sounds like the fan motor is straining to get the fan itself to turn, suggesting that the blades are catching on something to the point where it won't spin, although this is purely a guess as I haven't been able to replicate this.
Apart from removing the top cover (above the radiator area) and having a good look round, does anyone have any ideas for a cure? Is this a common problem on this VW engine? I've tried a squirt of WD40 around the spindle area in case it was dry but no improvement as yet.
All help appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for that. Will do.
A slightly different angle on this.
On the M8 going through Glasgow there are roadworks which are 40mph and are being governed by SPECS cameras. However, there is a SPEC at the beginning and one at the end.
So if like me you are driving the full length of it, then you need to keep to the speed limit.
However if you are a motorbike (and thus no front number plate), or if you join at the various junctions in between the two cameras, then you don't need to keep to the speed limit!
So you therefore have some cars sticking to 40 mph and others weaving their way in between.
Makes for some interesting driving!
Although I would not in any shape or form try to test my theory out, there is part of me that says I wonder if these cameras are real? Unless you know someone "in the know" then these cameras will do the same job whether they are real or not! Read more
The A90 between Perth and Dundee has got two sets of roadworks with the same cameras.
Whenever there was roadworks there in the past the tailbacks were bad, but this set up seems to work fairly well.
On the subject of whether they are real or not, I too have not heard of anyone getting done by these cameras anywhere up here or by the ones dotted along roadworks on the M6 etc.
The benefit of these cameras to me are that you can sail along at around 44 mph and cruise past the 40 mph people and know you won't get done.
Hi
I had my car parked in London, and a car caused damage to the bumper. It has a dent in it basically.
What is the best way that this can be repaired?
The person who damaged the vehicle left a note to call him. I did call him, but he is on holiday for 20 days. He doesn't want to do it through his insurance but just wants to get a cheap fix. Obviiously, doing it through insurance will cost him.
Of course, I don't have his car details, so can't really persue it.
I am glad in one sense that he left the note there...many wouldn't and don't.
Any ideas. I live in SW london, are there any bodywork magicians around here that anyone knows of. I also go to Brighton a lot...anyone there who someone knows about that does a good job at a reasonable cost?
Thanks

What I reckon will happen, is within three weeks, he will have had chance to relax, and get a new SIM card for £4 and will have had chance to tell all his mates the new number, at which point the old SIM will be thrown out of his car window. If it was me, I'd go to your insurer, at least then it may come from the uninsured loss recovery scheme. In any carse, good luck, hopefully I'm wrong!
I drive a 98 model vw passat, occassionally when I brake the car accelerates, and i have to brake again any ideas on what may cause this ? Read more
Anything from an air leak (check servo hose) to the bulkhead moving on application of brake pedal, really needs two people one to push brake pedal one to check under bonnet and under pedals in the car...
Hi all,
Anyone used Joe Dowds services recently? Do you know if he's still offering his services to private customers? I filled out his contact form a couple of days ago but have not heard anything and was wondering if maybe he doesn't do private punters now?
Any experiences?
Cheers guys. Read more
I recommended to a friend Joe's services based on what I had read on this site, he emailed Joe with his requirements, got a call a few days later then got the car a few weeks after that, a nice 3 yr old Galaxy TDi 115, my friend did no legwork himself just waited for the call from Joe, so as has been said above you don't have to do much yourself. He is very pleased with the car.

Thankyou for your replies, the vehicle will cost £135 for 12 months of tax, it has the following CO2 emisssions 154g/Km.
Thanks.

personally I prefer to add blind spot mirrors on to side mirrors, so that you can see even more.
Experiment with the idea before you tell me im wrong; its a hangover from racing.
The interior mirror shows whats behind you. The side mirrors (should) show whats behind you but at the side of you (ie approaching you, on your side, but past the vision of the interior mirror). The additional blind spot mirror should then show whats in front of that position, up to the side of the driver.
And its amazing how many caravan drivers have got such big and so many mirrors but most of them have so little vision.
