Have developed a noise from rear of car - on peering into look at the brakes have noticed one completely worn down whilst other looks new. Is this uneven wear likely to be due to a seized caliper and does anyone know if it's a big job to fix.

I'd also be interested to know whether this is likely to be covered under a manufacturer warranty or likely to be fair wear and tear - the warranty document (as always) is somewhat unclear. Have had car for 4 months and it's done 19,000 miles and is just over 3 years old (has 1 year Honda extended warranty). It's going to the main dealers tomorrow and I'm interested to know the likely problem.

Regards and thanks in advance Read more

(been away sorry for delay)
Sounds exactly like I was told when I had a Toyota, when a new pad was put in place - it was OK, no seizing.
After 2 years problem re-appeared, so I stripped the caliper down myself and found a very thin tear at the base of the piston seal. When a new pad was in pace the rubber seal was pushed down so tight it was difficult for road spray to get into the piston. The dealer had inspected it in the past, but it was such a small rip (3mm) it was only noticeable at full stretch with the caliper taken off the car ( 1hour +)
Once the pads were worn, the top of the piston got rusty and would seize slightly.

Anyway it is better to get a mechanic to look at it now (should not cost much just to look) to confirm that when the piston is out as far as it can safely go that there are no rips or tears in the piston seals or the caliper guide boots / seals. If it is ripped, it is not too expensive to repair. If it isn't then check on a daily basis that one brake is not hotter than its opposite.

I know there are many fans of the C300 in this forum so I'm sorry to tell you - I've just seen a stretch C300. It's actually on of the more credible looking stretches, but it still rate a "Blah!".

For some reason, the M69 seems to be a haunt for all things stretched recently. Seen a 300C, various hummers and Lincolns, but also a new VW Beetle!

I recently scraped my car's front bumper insert in a car park full of pillars. I got most of it out with T cut etc but still had the odd patch where it went deeper. i phoned the local ''come out to you'' paint and scuffs man. His minimum charge was £75. Puts down 'phone and heads for Mb main dealers to get a pot of touch up paint- they coudn't match it! I shall leave the marks as a reminder to myself that driving requires full attention everywhere. If you know your paint code, they make up a tin, plus some laquer and the tools to repair small mishaps.

I've not used them myself yet, but have been recomended them on high regard.

What are your opinions of the latest Hyundai Sonata -they've recently launched the 3.3V6 which would be a cracking buy in a couple of years.

My wife Tuscon is proving an excellent choice - but can a badge sensitive middle manager swim against the office car park tide with conviction? Read more

I can only say that for utilitarian purposes the previous 2.7 V6 is very satisfactory, and even if a bit surprised at being thrown into a corner it survives. Remember the other thing I drive is my hobby Supra twin turbo.

The new V6 I would compare to the Camry V6

When I taxed my car in February the post office clerk took the main part of the V5 document, leaving me with the green and red parts from the bottom.

I have just realised that I have yet to recieve the new V5C. As I am selling the car to a dealer next Friday how big a problem to I have? Read more

Does anyone know if the C-MAX 1.6TDCi 109PS with the CVT auto is any good? If not, can anyone think of any other diesel automatics that offer good fuel consumption within the same sort of price range? Interior space is also a priority. Read more

Dont tell me, Ford are still having troubles with the CVT boxes?

Then again Ford have always had trouble with the CTX / CVT boxes since they came out in the late 1980s.

Didn't want to go off at a tangent on the other S-Max thread.

I drove an FRV (2.2 diesel) 6 adults up last night. Pretty impressive, and a very reasonable indicated 43MPG on 100 mile A road route - car had done 300 miles - for all those people with consumption issues on Accord.

However it did feel a bit like I was driving a Transit minibus. Engine a lot noisier than in Accord, and very soft suspension (better when fully loaded than when I was on my own). I drove the Sport model, but that a trim difference only, the suspension is the same (and same size wheels/tyres).

I think an auto one would work well, but of course Honda don't do diesel auto's.

Has anybody driven both cars? i also wonder if the S-Max would cope with 6 adults for an hours journey? Read more

Try bose noise cancelling head phones when driving TDI's and TDCi's.
They are great.

HI there,

Over the past 3 weeks my catalytic converter has started making a rattly sound from around tickover to 2000 rpm. I have checked for any thing loose externally and found nothing. Started engine and put my ear to it and the noise is coming from inside. CAT works fine, sailed through MOT month before. My dad says it is a loose baffle, it is so annoying and town driving is so embarrasing :-(

Any ideas how to stop noise, can it be repaired? I really dont want buy a new CAT just because of a noise. If not I will have to live with it.

Please let me know either way.

Thanx Read more

Is this diesel the 2.5, unbreakable in BMWs but fragile in Vauxhalls; or the 2.2 GM unit?

Here's one for you clever folk out there. 2001 Scenic starts fine from cold however after a good run (say half hour) if i happen to pop into a burger joint or visit a relative the car will NOT start (from hot). It tries god love it but fails dismally. Engine turns over (so dont think its 'starter' fault) but does not get the final kick to start.
Local garage charged £130.00 to replace 'Engine Temperature Gauge?' which showed faulty on PC thingy. Car ran fine for a few hours starting well. However next day it failed to start from hot. Am going back to garage when i finish this set of shifts but would like some weaponry to fire at them. Ideas as to cause of hot start problems much appreciated.
Sorry for length of this but i'mnew to forums...
