If anyone watched tonights BBC1 'Trauma' TV programme it showed the effects of speed humps on a poor lady in the back of an Ambulance as she was on the brink of giving birth as the Ambulance driver tried to get to the Liverpool Hospital asap, whilst negotiating a series of severe speed humps... needless to say it did not improve her day and caused much discomfort, and also less importantly did not inprove the life of the Ambulance suspension... Apply gentle acceleration just before impact, it helps smooth the bump. I no longer slow for speed bumps (apart from the vertical sided Himalayan variety) though I suspect I will pay the price in terms of wear and tear. I see no point to the speed cushions, as they do not slow traffic, they force you to pay attention to the speed cushion, rather than safety, and they cause undue wear on tyres. Oh and they tend to force cars too close to cyclists.

My late mother was parapelegic, and had severe back pain. She was reluctant to go to the hospital for the pain clinic sessions because the journey in the ambulance was so painful, due in part to speed humps.

Has anyone ever used it in a diesel as part of a mix? If so what did the engine run like if any different, and what proportions did you use it in? Read more

VW Golf 1989 MK2 1.3L .
It usually starts fine but every now and again (a few weeks) is is "dead" when I turn the key.
It will sometimes start later or with a push, battery/starter connections have been cleaned.
I suspect the starter solonoid as the starter motor seems quite lively.
Can the solonoid be replaced seperately?
Any other ideas? Read more

Have you checked the earth strap is clean and secure? There's a bolt under the battery to earth the body and from there it goes to a bolt on the gearbox bellhousing (often not replaced after a clutch change)

Anyone know if a 1989 Pug 1.6 GTI runs on leaded or un-leaded. Read conflicting reports saying some do and some don't. Which is it ???? Read more

Lots of car related products at Lidl this week.

I bought the car fan for £2.99!
It is a bit noisy, but quite effective for those of us without A/C.
And at the price, who could complain.

Picked up the extending wheel lug wrench today. Been eyeing
these at Halfords and on Ebay priced at about £10, so
certainly glad I waited and saved a fair bit.

Be careful how you use that - they're great for snapping heads off overtightened bolts, or snapping studs. You really need shock to undo these things if they're too tight.

Getting into you car, putting seat belt on and pulling away is the easiest thing in the world (unless you have very short arms and a large tummy-tum-tum)

So, why do a lot of people get into the car, pull away, then struggle to put seatbelt on?

Set off and then belt up - saves time.

But then you're talking to someone who lives about 3 minutes off the road and I have my morning shave by the time I reach tarmac.

Clarkson had an amusing riff about people who would consciously think about it to choose to enter 99 seconds cooking time on the microwave than faff about entering 100seconds. That's me.

Anyway it gives me more time to waste here.

Afternoon,
I have recently brought a Renault 19 1.4 and have been noticing an intermittent judder which feels like an engine misfire or a poor connection in the ignition system. The problem is more pronounced at high speeds (50mph+). I have replaced the rotor arm, dist. cap, HT leads and spark plugs but the problem is still there. Has anyone else experienced this or able to suggest what else I might look at?

Thanks,

Paul. Read more

Thanks Carrow, looking at the carb is next on my list of things to try although I was hoping to avoid it. I think it's almost definately a misfire now, possibly a blockage in the carb/ fuel delivery?

Weighing up whether to fly or drive from Manchester for a business thing. Flight times are a pain requiring an overnight stay on Friday which stuffs a weekend thing for me.

A colleague was down there last week and it took him 8 hours with combo of accidents and r/works but 5 hours on way back. Read more
