About a month ago I took my '96 Megane 1.4 Paris into the local garage as it was overheating and spewing coolant out of the expansion tank.

After having the car for a couple of days, they replaced the thermostat, but that didnt stop the coolant coming out of the bottle, so they replaced the expansion bottle cap, and that seemed to do the trip.

Now, 5 weeks later, just as I was stopping looking at the temperature gauge, it overheats again. I pop the bonnet and coolant is being ejected out of the expansion bottle again.

I take it into the garage again. They bleed the system, and again, it seems to be ok. Now, I've driven it only a couple of times since, and done only about 3 miles, and I decide to just check the expansion bottle when I get home from work. There is coolant coming out of the bottle again.. only very slowly but I know if I had just done 1 more mile then it would have overheated again, and it would be gushing out of the tank.

The guys at the garage advised on my last visit that they didn't 'think' the head gasket was blown. Surely there would be more of a sign if it had? It seems to drive perfectly well, just not circulating the coolant. Its not losing coolant anywhere apart from out of the expansion tank, as if the pressure is too high and the water is escaping out of the weakest point, ie the bottle top?

Just wondering if anyone had experience of this, and what may be causing it so I can point the local garage at anything they might want to check?

Appreciate any suggestions. Read more

As Martin1981 suggests get a garage to 'sniff' around the coolant tank with their emissions tester, this will tell very quickly & cheaply whether the head gasket has gone or not; it certainly sounds like it.

FWIW my last Cavalier was still returning 40+ mpg & performing normally , even when the head gasket had gone and it was using a pint of water a day!

I see in the Daily Express today there is a new Vauxhall recall on mainly 04/05 "facelift" Corsas for failed timing chains. What interested me was the paper quoting Vauxhall saying there was nothing to worry about as the worst that could happen was the engine would "stop". Does this mean the 1.0 & 1.2 litre engines are "safe" if the chain snaps? Read more

victorbox, apparantly the 1.4 twinport petrol engine also has a camchain.

Had my Scenic in for the seatbelt recall today and asked them to put new blades on the front. Now I know its my own fault for not confirming the price but when it had been in a couple of months ago, I had asked then and was told they were "30 odd quid".

Well, SWMBO went and collected the car tonight to be hit with a cost of £44.56 each, plus VAT, plus £15.60 labour!

A total of £107.34! For two blinking wiper blades!!!

Now I know as I said its my fault for not confirming the price beforehand, but has anyone else replaced these wipers and if so, how much were they?

(Incidentally I had went to Halfords and couldn't find wipers for my car and didn't really like the look of the fittings on them for changing them!) Read more

Just as a little follow up, after emailing Renault over the course of a few days, the dealer has phoned me back today to apologise and say they got it wrong!

Apparently it was a Trainee (?) in the parts dept that day and he used the code for a pair of wipers instead of the individual ones, and so I was charged for 2 pairs instead of one pair.

Yeah I believe it - NOT!

Anyway, I am getting a refund for the difference. Still won't be going back to the dealer.

Vehicle: 51 1.8 Mondeo (New Shape), 106,000 miles.
Vehicle has a distictive top end chatter, especially worse at idle, I was thinking loose timing chain? Does anyone have any experience of this on these vehicles, up and till now it has been a very capable and reliable workhorse. Read more

We had the car sorted a couple of weeks ago. Turned out to be fanbelt idler wheel, and tensioner assy. Now quiet as mouse.

I'm considering purchasing a Tddi, however, it's cheap from one of these supermarkets and I can't actually test-drive it. It's in mint condition, but how different to drive will it be to Mum's 05 TDci 130 Mondeo Ghia? Will it be louder and rattle more? Obviously it'll be a bit slower, being 15bhp down, but I was more concerned with mechanical refinement... Read more

I'm not so sure older designs are always so simple, including older injection systems. Although I do believe new diesel injection systems can be super expensive.

Once I tried to understand the mathematics how a carb' worked, I got very bad headache.

We bought the Springer one of these in the hope it would keep it occupied. No interest at all. It has now disappeared we suspect buried deeply. This dog is disturbed I tell you.

My wife and I called in at our local (very local) Suzuki dealer today to have a look at Swift. As chance would have it, they had an 05 auto for sale. It is a nice shade of metallic green with 4K miles and they are asking £7595 for it, which seems a good price. Am I right about the price?

I was allowed a very short test drive but I did manage to get onto a dual carriageway for a few miles. I must admit that it did seem a bit sluggish to get away from a standstill from the junction on the dual carriageway but was fine when underway, if a bit too keen to kick down from top gear.

The seats are good, if a little firm and leg room in the front is OK. In the back, with me in it, my wife could sit behind me. I definitely wouldn't be able to sit behind someone of my height. The headroom is good both front and back. The engine is a little noisy at the top end but quite sweet otherwise. The steeing is a bit light but quite sharp and the ride is OK for a small car. I like the styling very much, even though it doesn't give as much room inside as a Jazz.

My wife wasn't able to drive it, as she didn't have her glasses with her, so she is due to drive it tomorrow morning. I was surprised that the salesman we dealt with didn't even know they had the car in stock, particularly as it is the only used Swift that they have.

We were in the Xantia at the time and, as we drove off, I said to my wife what a nice car it still was to drive, which she agreed with. Since it has had new spheres the ride is also super once again. Read more

I think it is more obvious because it is supposed to be an external flush fit and not recessed. It would have looked neater if the liner had been recessed behind the wheel arch, like most are.

I would say that on the ones that I have seen the gap is more like 2mm. As you said, on that section it looks straight rather than curved too.

I just asked a question about the Citroen Dispatch Hdi, but gather the same answer is true of the Xantia/406 etc engines.

Are the 8valve versions of the 90 & 110bhp 2.0 Hdi engines mechanically the same? i.e, from what I can see they are, and if so, it mean I can actually have a remapped chip for a 110 fitted to my 90bhp (well, 94bhp) Citroen Dispatch, giving a final figure of 138bhp rather than 119.

I know it may need an uprated clutch etc, my main concern is engine design and compression ratio differences??!!

Recently I have had trouble with the antilock braking system warning light on the Xantia. In a night of heavy rain the light came on when motoring. I kept going. Then looked at teh manual and it advised that the light should go on start up and come back on within two minutes if there was a fault. Well for the next three days it did come on and stay on steady. But then after a harsh brake the warning dissappeared. How can I be sure that the Antilock is working ok.

If you just want to find out if it's working, find an empty road, accelerate to a reasonable speed, and perform a full emergency stop.

If ABS is working you'll feel it pulsating through the pedal, and probably hear it too. ABS light may flash during the process.
