Hello. The drivers-side electric window has stopped working on my girlfriends R reg VW polo. I tested/replaced the fuse but this seems to be ok. According to the manual the windows operate on an automatic fuse (a separate fuse i suppose?) which breaks under stress, e.g if windows frozen shut, and reconnects seconds later. I wonder whether the 'blocks' clamping the window as referred to in a previous thread for a VW Passat have broken/cracked generating stress and causing the fuse to break?? I guess i really need to dismantle the door to spot any obvious faults but i can't work out how to loosen the grab handle to release the door trim either! Any ideas where the fault may lie, could the window switch be at fault? Any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated as i'm a bit of a novice at these things. Read more

Hey all, first things first, I'm not sure how to put a new comment as I'm a newbie!!, but I have a similar problem, sometimes my car cuts out under high load, 50-8mph, turn ignition off and back on and it's fine, if it happens enough then I get a light on which I've diagnosed and it comes back as "Overboost", the car apparently had a 180map
Swmbo was talkng about buying a new car and is wanting an automatic. She was wondering which automatic was the most frugal. Can anybody point me in the direction of road tests or reviews for such. She likes 4 door hatchbacks (or should I say 5 door). Read more
Check 'View Threaded' and you will see that it is.
I have recently had 62,000 service. 1 week later oil light kept flashing and stop sign bleeping. Took car back oil filter changed oil changed again and oil pressure switch renewed. Still flashing. Back to dealer they say no pressure in engine when at idle speed ok when being driven and revs up high. They say havnt had this fault ever before could be oil filter housing or oil pump but not certain. Housing going to cost £200 plus and if that doesnt correct New Oil pump etc cost approx £650 with labour. Anybody experienced this problem and if so how was it fixed please. Worried and poor lady driver. Read more
It could be that the electronic gauge has started to become faulty. It does this on my 307 and on a few other fellow Pug owners with cars around the ten year mark.
You could make sure that the electrical connector is clean and not damaged. It's possible that its been disturbed during the service?
After urging from other Backroomers had the 4 1/2 year old Passat a/c serviced.£59 total. Inspection, removal and weighing of contents (390g instead of 600g) refill plus insertion of dye and lubricant.

Typically around an hour, or a bit more.
I take my cars (my own and any I am working on) to a local chap who charges me £40 all-in. He'll come out to me for another £10.
First recover the old gas (15-20 mins or so).
Then vac right down - and leak test if system was low (30 mins or so).
Then recharge - 10 mins.
Any ideas on how/where I can get rid of a set of old alloys and tyres? They're in pretty bad shape so aren't worth anything, but I've just been down to the local council dump/recycling centre and they wouldn't take them.
Any ideas please? Read more
My local council (Sefton) willingly removes all types of larger items although sometimes there's a wait of a week or so because of sheer demand.
Local councils are also supposed to safely dispose of asbestos..:-)

Just had my 4 year old 32,000 miles VW (2.0 ltr, 8v, 115bhp petrol) serviced and was told that the cambelt should be renewed.
The VW dealer quoted a discounted £300 to do the job.
The chap advised me that it needed doing per the book but given the mileage it could wait another twelve months to which I agreed.
I noticed in yesterday's telegraph, however, that HJ advised that the 1.4 and 1.6 16V VW engine cambelts should always be changed at least every four years because the 'rollers' deteriorate.
Does this apply to the 2.0 8v engine also please and should I book it in? Read more
Suggest you see my thread regarding this matter. My 1.8 20V ADR cambelt went at 72K miles. I went to VW to complain that it was'nt supposed to be changed until 80K, they said that it had now been changed to 60K. They wanted £1800 just to look...if the pistons were damagaed then "probally double that". I am doing it myself, and once the car is back on the road I will be selling it. Until VAG can sort out its service interval mess and appaling customer service I certainly wouldn't have another
Hi - I have a 98 passat which seems to have developed a problem with water saturating the rear passanger-side footwell when it rains. I have inspected the door seal and there no signs of a leak, the car has never been involved in an accident, and all other areas of the car remain dry.
A friend has suggested it may have something to do with the air-con heater outlet beneath the seat. But if so, why would the problem not occur with other heater outlets?
Any ideas appreciated. Read more
That was around the price VW wanted to charge me.
I got a substantial discount after complaining to VW UK. Car was ony 4 months out of warranty.
Even for a '98 car, if the garage was negligent in its servicing, you may have some justification for a large discount if care was not taken. Or not.

Hello, thinking of buying a MG ZT+ CDTi 135, (Same as 75 shape) Took one out for a test drive and thought it was a nice car, and spotted a better one on the autotrader website.
Im thinking about looking at, it's in that nice blue on a 53 reg.
What i'd like to know is are any any good?, never been much of a Rover person but i know these are manly BMW so does that make it any good?
It has the 2.0 BMW Diesel Engine so no headgasket problems.
Also as they are no longer made will that be a problem with parts etc?.
The car is up for £7995 with 42k Read more
I had a Focus hatchback (5dr) as a company car about five years ago. Once you put the buggy in the boot there wasn't much room for shopping etc. It would have been even worse with the traditional style pram we had at the time.
That was the only siginificant issue I had with the Focus. At the time I couldn't believe how good the car was for a Ford so I bought a new shape Mondeo on the strength of it but that turned out to be a lemon.
I recently bought a rx8 privately but found out later it was a previous Cat C write off. (it had 2 owners before me)
I did a HPI check prior to purcahse and it came out clear (it was on a private plate then but the check clearly indicated that the previous registration had "no intrests recorded" against it). The seller wanted his private plate back, so I eventually acquired the car under its old registration number.
I only found out it was a previous write off after bringing it to mazda for some repair work and they carried out an experian check for me.
I phoned HPI and they are now telling me that their records indicate this car was a write off indeed. I am in the process of pursing compensation (only a miserly £2000 max).
What I am curious to know is:
1. Could a number change have masked the car's history?
2. It there a situation where a vehicle's accident history could be held back or put on record belatedly? i.e. could the seller have manipulated this?
3. My V5 document says nothing about it being a previous Cat C meaning DVLA knows nothing about this, is this illegal?
4. What are my rights in this situation? (I cannot claim this car is unroadworthy as I have stupidly carried out repair work on it)
5. What is my best chance of recovering any money back on this?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Read more
For the car to be imported into Ireland it will incur a vehicle registration tax of to 23- 30%.
Also the car can still be checked there on HPI exchange with the chassis no.
My own attempts to fix this failed (typically) so resorted to my friendly local garage. Turns out that the motor had seized on the one window and the window had stuck in the rubber seals on the other. Total cost for repairs 30 quid and "drop the money in any time" - great garage!
