Disposal of old wheels/tyres - pettaw
Any ideas on how/where I can get rid of a set of old alloys and tyres? They're in pretty bad shape so aren't worth anything, but I've just been down to the local council dump/recycling centre and they wouldn't take them.

Any ideas please?

The wheels could probably go to your local scrap merchant.

The tyres are more of a problem. Our local independent tyre depot charges £1 per tyre to dispose of them legally.

The correct way would be the tyre dealer. They'll strip the rims & dispose of both as business waste & recycle appropriatly.

I'd leave them in my MP's garden. I wonder if there is a weight limit on freepost addresses?
What nonsense, no wonder there is so much flytipping.

Yeah, I do find it a little irritating that they wouldn't take them. I wouldn't even have minded paying a little bit, but it does make you wonder whether there would be less fly tipping if these places were more 'user-friendly' because even if its expensive for the council to recycle them surely its even more expensive for the council to employ someone to come and pick up all the fly-tipped rubbish and then yadda yadda.

Anyhoo, I've got to go down to my local tyre place to pick up some Forte engine flushes etc so I'll ask them how much they charge and if its possible for them to take tyres AND rims.

My local waste recycling centre has recently started to accept tyres &/or rims and tyres. Have you tried neighbouring councils?

Might sound a bit daft....

Take them down your local sailing club, most people use them as a support underneath the bottom of the boat to stop it scraping on the ground when parked up or on pontoons. So I'm sure they will take them off your hands!

put them on that internet auction thingy some fool is bound to buy them

It's to do with licensing of all the different types of waste, most tips don't do vehicle waste, even though most are just innocous metal castings and pressings,
From 2007, the vehcile manufacturer will be reposnsible for taking them back, and no doubt each will have only one place in the country.

Whack 'em on ebay - 99p start with no reserve. Someone will buy them and it saves you the hassle of disposing of them legally.

Our local tip in Beds takes tyres and wheels, phone your neigbouring counties to see if they take them.

You could try something similar to what I witnessed recently.
Usual route to work, passing a lay by. In it was a newish Saab hitched up to a caravan, as I passed, someone seemed to be removing the caravan number plate.
The 'van had been dumped and over the next few days was vandalised. Within a week the much maligned local council had removed the remains.

>>local council dump/recycling centre and they wouldn't take them

This sort of stuff is really puzzling - my Dad hired a van to move some stuff and we took the opportunity to get rid of a carpet at the tip. Had to get the hire forms from home and return to prove we weren't trade (although the van said "Van Hire") on its side and the forms did nothing more than confirm this.

No wonder there's so much fly tipping.

The waste company contracted by the county council around here was fined heavily last year for exceeding the amount of waste it is licensed to take. The whole thing is an EU sham. The waste company is contracted a fixed fee to deal with the county's waste at a number of sites, but also has to buy licenses for the different wastes and quantities. They have to guess how much waste people will take to avoid a fine, so they don't want heavy waste or waste that they aren't allowed to take, such as vehicle parts or gas cylinders, or soil etc...

Before these stupid laws almost all lead acid batteries were recycled because people ran businesses and made a living reclaiming the lead, now it's the law, there is so much regulation and paperwork that it's no longer profitable, in fact it's a cost, so only 36% are recycled, the rest are 'lost'.

My local council (Sefton) willingly removes all types of larger items although sometimes there's a wait of a week or so because of sheer demand.

Local councils are also supposed to safely dispose of asbestos..:-)
