I see in the Daily Express today there is a new Vauxhall recall on mainly 04/05 "facelift" Corsas for failed timing chains. What interested me was the paper quoting Vauxhall saying there was nothing to worry about as the worst that could happen was the engine would "stop". Does this mean the 1.0 & 1.2 litre engines are "safe" if the chain snaps?

Yes I should think so, if that is what the makers say. They are the ones who are going to have to honour the warranty on an 04/05 car after all.
They probably don't have 4D engines - ie, the same space isn't occupied by different components at different times.
The 1970's Vauxhall Victor engine was like this, they just used to recommend checking the cambelt rather than replacing it.
And it won't exactly help the whole timing chain thing by stretching services to 20,000 miles or the 2 years that Vaux specifies.
No, it will probably stretch the timing chain and perhaps that is the problem! If the chain doesn't have clean oil and clean oil to the tensioner, if it is worked on engine oil pressure, there will be problems.

victorbox, apparantly the 1.4 twinport petrol engine also has a camchain.
