We have had a disaster tonight in that the wrong fuel has been put into our ford galaxy 1.9 tdi.

Does anyone know if this is a diy job to get it back to life or will I be at the mercy of a garage.

Unfortunately, the car was driven 700 yards before it gave up completely.

Thanks to all you guys who helped to give me the confidence to rectify our fuel error.

I am pleased to say that all's well that ends well in that I spent the morning completely emptying the tank via the sender unit and replaced the fuel filter and drained the pipes. Quite a fair sized job in all.

With the tanked refilled it was fingers crossed time. What a job I had to get the car to fire! in fact the cars own battery after a few non productive cranks gave up the ghost so with the assistance of an auxillary battery and a bit more cranking away she went - EURIKA!!!

I then took the car for a good 5 mile run and blasted the fuel through and it now appears to be running as sweet as a nut.

The only downside is the drop of diesel i spilt in the cab getting the sender unit out - it will probably stink for months!!!

So here's proof that it is not all doom and gloom with a mis fuel - or very costly - if you get the right advice - I reckon about £110 including the 4 - 25ltr jerry cans!

All i've got to do now is dispose safely of the old mixed fuel - what a waste.

Here to you all

Thanks

My daughters fiesta revs very fast when changing down gears with the clutch disengaged. This only happens some times. When first started up in the mornings it seems to be ok. The thottle is not stuck and the cable runs freely. Does any body have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

sounds like the idle speed control valve. i would try cleaning it first. i always clean them with carb. cleaner and then put a bit of clear grease in there to lub. it back up.

Question Oil prices
cdbr

I want to do an interim change on my Merc c220 cdi. The recommended oil is Castrol 0-30 or Mobil 1. But with it needing 5.5 litres the cost is between £60-£80 because I will need 2*4 litre cans.

Am I being too picky and would a similar grade semi-synthetic oil be OK? Or is there somewhere that sells oil cheaper than Halfords?

I was in Germany on Tuesday this week and the American military on base stores had Mobil 1 at $4.75 a litre which is about £2.80 a litre or £14 for 5 litres.

I read in the London Evening Standard tonite about a bloke who drove 60 miles at 120mph because his "go faster" pedal was stuck. He crashed at a roundabout. Oh yeah, and the police were chasing him.

If true (!) I don't suppose the idea formed in his brain that if you took it out of gear, the car would slow down...even if the engine was screaming. Or how about turning off the ignition? Read more

Is it possible to get a list of all accidents that are on the insurance database against my name?

If so, how?

Thanks. Read more

Navara Van man

I think you can under the data protection act. Same as you can look at the credit rating info held on you by the banks.

This offer looks too good to be true, has anybody used the broker?
tinyurl.com/m9q4b

It betters the broker4cars.co.uk price by about £1800. There does appear some inconsistency in the quoted list prices between the 2 suppliers and Citroen.
www.broker4cars.co.uk/citroen/citroen-xsara-picass...m

I could put up with the heavy depreciation at this price. The new model on the C4 floorpan is said to be at least 6 months away by one dealer, unless anybody can quote me different. Looking round locally at forecourt prices for used examples, there appears to be a £2k premium on used models over the discounted prices for new cars. OK, I know that this gives them a margin to negotiate on trade ins and may persuade some prospective purchasers that depreciation is not high.

Any comments

Is there any merit in the Euro IV car ownership.

Unless you are running it as a company car then no there isn't any real advantage. The EU IV car may save you a 10 or 20 quid a year on RFL but the extra discount on the old model will probably save you a lot more than that.

The old 2.0 HDi is 90bhp compared to the 1.6 16v petrol's 110bhp but on the road the extra torque of the diesel will probably be much more useful than the 20bhp and it will be quite a bit more economical too.

I was stuck behind a car travelling at 20mph and once clear i overtook. It was in a 30mph zone and when overtaking i was doing just over 30mph. However, a police van pulled out of a nearby junction and pulled over to the other side of the road, think he may have ben checking licsence plate. Does this mean i will get fined? or would they have to have caught me on camera? Please help, very anxious as i have NEVER done anything like this before! Read more

Basically, i assumed the crime was overtaking in a 30 zone and witnessed doing so by police patrol van. I think i was doing just over 30 so i wondered what would happen to me.

Shop around as much as possible ensuring that the distance to take the car doesn't prove uneconomical !!

Just had a 24k service on my petrol S60. Quoted £360 in London - luckily I work some of the week in the east (ish) Midlands. Local dealer near my out of town office £240 !!

Just about to embark on my first cam belt change on my '95, N-Reg Passat 1.9TD. Have seen reference to camshaft locking key and injector pump lock to prevent movement once belt removed. Are these items absolutely esential, or are there reliable substitutes and/or work arounds ? Local tool hire shops don't appear to stock these kits for hire.
Many Thanks! Read more

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

The kit is cheap enough from any good factors. Laser tools, Draper, Sykes Pickavant all do versions. Most difficult bit is getting the front of the car off, every one I have done has a slightly different way of releasing the bumper moulding, one had a hidden screw behind the number plate. I use two lengths of M10 studding to slide the front crossmember along.Watch out for the left hand threaded bolt on the auxiliary belt tensioner on some models! As Andy T states

A common-sense, methodical approach and it should all fall into place in 1-2 hrs. ;o)>>

but give yourself a good 4-5 hours for the first time. Dont forget to replace the cam cover seal and fit a new tensioner!
Good luck
