I was stuck behind a car travelling at 20mph and once clear i overtook. It was in a 30mph zone and when overtaking i was doing just over 30mph. However, a police van pulled out of a nearby junction and pulled over to the other side of the road, think he may have ben checking licsence plate. Does this mean i will get fined? or would they have to have caught me on camera? Please help, very anxious as i have NEVER done anything like this before!

Your real speed will have been about 3 mph lower than that which you saw on your speedo. The car didn't follow you for any distance so they can't have measured your speed. It doesn't sound like a camera vehicle. They might have checked your number plate but if you are taxed/insured/MOTd/not disqualified etc you are in the clear IMHO. You can be more sure after 14 days, which is the time they have to send you a Notice of Intended Prosecution for any alleged offence. Relax!

Hi, thanks for replying feel slightly better, so the police cannot fine me even though they saw me? Just wondered, how you came to be so knowledgable on these matters. Just curious!

Hi, ta for replying, feeling slighlty better. So, could the police still fine me judged on what they saw as they stopped but did not follow, pretty sure it wasn't a camera van but still worried as i am usually a very careful driver and i feel sick with worry! Also, what are penalties for this crime? Ta!

Basically, i assumed the crime was overtaking in a 30 zone and witnessed doing so by police patrol van. I think i was doing just over 30 so i wondered what would happen to me.
