Whats the best way of making your windscreen smear-free ?
I understand that a lot of the smears are due to tiny quantities of unburnt diesel fuel mixed in with the turbulent air on motorways, so how is this best dealt with. Read more
Hope someone can help.
My girlfriend's 1997 Ka2's door locks will not open after she has locked it up, only way she can get in is thru the boot!!
It seems to stem from the drivers side, she puts the key in but nothing, won't open although it WILL lock everthing up.
Any ideas? she has had to disconnect the wires on the inside of the door ( that black plastic screw cap thingy- sorry i don't know what it's called exactly) but that also disables her windows and radio!
Anyone any ideas as i feel she may get ripped off on this.
Thanks in advance.

Central locking systems are an integrated feedback network of circuits.
Don't assume that the effects always show-up in the place where
the fault actually is.
Remove the passenger door plug and check for pin corrosion.
Ok, will look into that thanks.
I bought a Ford Focus TDCi Ghia estate 02 plate via an auction trader. It had a "4000 RDS" radio cassette stereo system, with steering column controls.
The trader kindly replaced this with a "6000 CD RDS E-ON" radio CD player, but said he could NOT connect this to the steering column controls.
Assuming this is correct, how could I connect the "6000 CD RDS E-ON" to use the steering column controls? Perhaps I need a new connector or adaptor? I retain the "4000 RDS".
Help appreciated.

Thanks to all who replied. I hoicked the "6000 CD RDS E-ON" out with my trusty coat-hangers! It has:
- Part# 97AP-18C815-HA, Serial# M122528
- (one side of plastic ?cable-clamp)
Connector inlet Part# 96FP-14A524 wherein 3 sockets:
o 2 x single in-lines (SIL: 8,7-way) with plugs mated
o 1 x 6-way SIL with ** no plug mated **
- (other side of cable-clamp, near to coaxial aerial inlet)
12-way dual in-line (DIL) socket inlet ** no plug mated **
Hanging loose behind the "6000" was 17-way DIL PLUG with cores:
6=Green/White, 11=Black/White, 12=Brown/Yellow, 15,17=Green/Blck
Whereas "4000 RDS" has:
- Part# YS6F-18K876-DA, Serial# M110570
- (one side of plastic ?cable-clamp)
Connector inlet Part# 98AP-14A624 wherein 3 sockets:
o 2 x single in-lines (SIL: 8,7-way) with plugs mated
o 17-way dual in-line (DIL) connector socket inlet
CONCLUSION:
Ford changed the Steering Control connectors. I need either SIL-6 or DIL-12 Plug, then to rewire 5 cores from DIL-17 into it.
Does anyone know part# for which SIL-6 or DIL-12 plug I need for steering controls for "6000", also pinout cf 17-way DIL from the "4000"?
There was an article in H.J`s column in last Saturday`s Telegraph re the need for different length wheel bolts to fit a spacesaver wheel on M. Benz to avoid hub/brake damage.
Does anyone know if this problem is unique to Mercedes or are other marques equally affected.?????? Read more
I suggest you check your Mondeo again - when I was
looking (At Ghia's) the spare had a 1" smaller steel wheel
and a higher profile tyre so is not the same size.
>>
Although it's a lot thinner, I think it works out 0.5" smaller on outside diameter. This is about the same difference as between a new tyre and one worn down near the legal limit. It's a bit like putting the "just legal" tyre a lot of people use for a spare on, when you have new tyres on. It doesn't affect the ESP at all on mine.
can anybody help me on this one... the drivers window will go up when button is pressed but will stop after about an inch and come back down. If you hold the button down the window goes up two inches then back down again, you have to keep playing with it to get the window to close properly. Is this a common problem with these vectra's because at the moment i spend more time looking out of the drivers window than the windscreen.
thanks chris Read more
You are supposed to open the winsow fully, let go of button and then press button again and hold for 5 secs.
then...
Close window fully, then repress button for 5 secs.
it should now learn where top and bottom is, and also the one touch operation will work.
Hi
I have a Golf Mk4 1.6 SE which has hesitation problem which I have posted on here recently.
I have now changed the air filter. When I changed the Air filter I had a look around the engine area and check the new throttle body VW had fitted. I notice that the small pipe that comes from the throttle body pipe was completely squashed. It leads directly into the engine just below the oil filler cap. I inspected the oil cap and found it coated with a creamy substance.
I took the car to another garage to get a battery check but this is going to take about 5 hours, the garage guy said the battery may be flat or faulty. He had a look at this squashed pipe too and decided to take the complete throttle body pipe off. When we look inside it was caked inside with this creamy stuff too and the small pipe was collasped into inself. He cleared it out as best he could but he said that this was propably causing a problem as the engine couldnt breath?
Sorry to go on, Im now stumped, can this cause hesitation problems? My car has visited VW loads of times, had its service in December so why didnt they check the pipes? Shall I go back and cause a big fuss! If they dont help can I go elsewhere to get it done-its still under Warranty. Read more
Hi Peter
No water loss from Header tank.
I took car to another VW specialist, he looked at car for me. He said that he can hear 'air' being sucked in were this small breather pipe is. He said that he is always replacing the throttle body pipe as even the slightess hole can cause problems, as the only air must come only from the air filter, as this is a sealed/closed system.( I know what he means)
He said if the car under Warranty, take it back, tell dealer to replace throttle pipe, flush the engine to clear all 'stugg' out and put in new oil and filter on.
I have now written to the main VW dealer stating that Im not happy with the treatment me or my car have received; Ive had no reply as yet.
My partner is coming with me to speak to dealer and hopefully because his a bloke;he can talk some sense into them!!

Mapmaker Towers is having a room replastered. It seems an ideal opportunity to get rid of the box containing two 2.5 sq mm ringmain cables that head up into the loft.
So he has cut out a two-inch-ish gap in the old plaster, back to the brickwork. He has purchased a plastic sleeve in which to run the two cables. (He has of course ensured that he complies with part P.)
How does he secure the plastic sleeve to the wall in order to make it sufficiently firm that his plasterer will be able to plaster over it?
Or should he be doing something else?

Actually they are governed by the same rules, sort of...
If the call centre is based offshore but is making the
call on behalf of a British company to a British phone
line then they are covered by the same rules as a
British call centre. However if the company is based abroad then
they are not. Quite how that is policed I'm not sure
but that is how it is supposed to work. Bearing in
mind that many of these companies are based abroad to circumvent
some of our other laws then I don't suppose they take
much notice of those relating to phone calls either.
The other catch of course is that if you have any
business with the company then they are free to call you,
even BT are known to make marketing calls to their own
customers who are registered with TPS!
The phone and network peddled by my overseas pests is T-Mobile. No way of knowing which company want to 'give' me the phone.
Hi there,
Does anybody know if the cars at Trade Sales are mostly UK or EU sourced? Or is it a mixture. Will it be displayed on the car, or will I have to try and find out from the one of the salesman.
If anybody has bought a car from there recently was the service good. Do you see the log book/service history before the deal is done.
Grateful for any info.

The main difference between trade and private buyers at auction is the indemnity fee charged. IMO they are rediciulous at most major auction houses - often approaching 5% or more. Registered trade buyers pay far less than this.
As for the Sale Of Goods Act there seems to be a worrying concept forming that this somehow protects the buyer of a used car like a warranty. It does not - all it does is set down fair and reasonable terms for buyer and seller and is designed to protect the seller against unreasonable claims by the buyer as much as the other way round. It provides some protection but anyone who buys a used car thinking that they get some sort of "free" warranty simply because of the SoGA could make an expensive mistake.
MY Polo 1.4 tdi pd is now out of warranty so I am going to do the oil changes for my car myself. As my engine is a 3 cylinder version of the 4cylinder tdi pd I presume the oil filter canister on the front of engine with the plastic top complete with the large hexagan nut (26mm) on top, is the same as the ones on the larger tdi pd engines. Apparently this nut has to be torqued up to 25 Nm. I will need a small torque wrench. but where can I get a 26mm socket and surely a socket of this size will have a 3/4 inch drive so I would need reducers for the small torque wrench to fit the socket. If you change the oil on your tdi pd engine I would be happy if you could tell me how you replace the oil filter element. Maybe you can buy a special spanner for this job. any help would be appreciated.

This is getting silly.....
The location of the filter makes it really easy to get to.
A strap wrench or 76mm filter socket will undo it.
There is an o-ring in the cap that is replaced with the filter and because of that just nipping up the caps works fine.
The torque spec is to stop gorillas stripping it.
The only difference it that you might want to pinch the wife's baster to suck out the oil in the housing.
and...you can refill the oil through the same housing which helps stop spills.

I have a Volvo S60 and during the cool spell a couple of weeks ago my handbrake locked on overnight. My drive is on a slight incline. When I went to move the car I had to gently rock the car forwards and backwards (using the engine) and the brakes became free with a load "smack" type noise.
Took the car into my local dealership and they changed the disc's and shoes on the rear. Volvo refused the garages request to assist my cost from warrenty.
Up until this the hand brake was very efficient, after the replacement it was spongy, and a week later after it's 24000 mile service where they stripped out, cleaned and adjusted backplate on O/S/R it is now a little better.
My questions are:
1) could I have warpped the disc's by rocking the car as I did
2) did the garage see an opportunity to make money with doing more than was needed
3) if the garage are honest, what is my next step to recover the cost of the work from Volvo UK.

Likewise.
I work from home when in the UK, but once a month or so drive to an airport to fly abroad. My V70 can consequently sit either in the garage at home or at an airport for a few weeks at a time. Having had the handbrake stick on tight a number of times I now leave it off in the home garage and at airports.
The final trigger for doing this was whacking the garage wall hard with the front bumper whilst building up enough rocking motion to free the stuck handbrake. At home My V70 is parked nose-in to the garage, about 1" from the wall to fit it in. A tennis ball hanging from the ceiling tells me when to stop, and a strip of the wall is rubber lined as a precaution. When the handbrake freed it did so with a BANG, BANG from each side of the car a fraction of a second apart.
It is worth noting though that these cars have a separate handbrake drum inside the rear wheel hub; the disc brakes are not used as a handbrake. The lumpiness felt on braking after a period of being parked up is indeed the disc brake pads brushing off corrosion on the discs but it will happen even if the handbrake was not used. Not using the handbrake just makes the brakes being stuck on hard less likely; any sticking will just be handbrake shoes and disc brake pads, lightly, from gently resting on their corresponding braking surfaces.
As an aside, the way the handbrake mechanism works is the reason why the car rolls backwards/forwards a short distance when the handbrake is applied and footbrake released on an incline.
