Passenger side headlight bulb has gone on my car (probably due to the Auto Lights function switching them on too often).
Handbook says to get a dealer to do it as access is restricted.

1. Is it possible to do it myself and if so, how?
2. Should I get the bulb from a dealer or will a bog standard Halfords one be the same? Read more

Over 10 years later you're comment is still helping... Managed to get bulb holder on wires out, couldnt get bulb out of holder, wasnt sure how it came away, was your comment of 'having to use a screwdriver to prise it out' - thanks for that :-) ... To anyone else, just changed the drivers (offside) side bulb - tip - to get better access, you can unclip the washer water tube, it then just pulls away.

Car models based on the floorpans of other car models are today slickly designed, looking and even feeling like completely different vehicles, but it was not always so.

I am thinking in particular of two badge-engineered Mini variants, the Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet. Actually said to be quite nice little cars, had 12-inch wheels I think rather than the Mini's 10-inch items, but the styling with sharp little snout and pert little boot always looked ridiculous to me although well executed. However for a true BL monstrosity, wasn't there a version of the Austin 1800 with a longitudinally-placed 6-cylinder?

Citroen did something similar by adopting for the Light 15's last couple of years of production the big bootlid originally fitted to the Slough-assembled RHD cars. It wasn't all that bad but ruined the Light 15's lines. And there was a truly grotesque aftermarket boot some people used to fit to 2CVs.

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I have a problem that I think someone can help me with. I have a Seat Ibiza, 5 years old, but only 28000 miles. My dealer has told me that I need a new gearbox and clutch. I don't disbelieve them, but I am sure that this should not happen with this low mileage. I want to go into a fight with Seat/VW to get the costs back, but am I wrong? Should I accept that this is something that can just happen whatever the age or mileage of the car?

Thanks for the replies. It's true that I do a lot of short journeys, but I'm not hard on the gearbox in the way I drive. It's always been serviced by the dealer, and I'm not really confident enough to go looking elsewhere - I just wouldn't know what I am buying. So, I'm going to have a go at Seat/VW to get some of the money back.

Thanks to you all, you've been a real help.

Best regards, Ann

I tried to get an answer to this question in a previous thread but have had no replies yet. Basically, someone suggested that new PSA HDIs don't use the fuel additive (EOLYS) any longer. Is this the case and if not, why not? Also are all of the current PSA HDI engines fitted with a particle filter that needs replacing at specified intervals? Read more

What on? What mileage? Has the FAP already been changed?

After returning home from the trip away when the HG failed, the car was left for about 3 days without use. Started it and there was a very loud clack clack clack sound.

I'm pretty sure one of the tappets running completely empty. The longer the car is left the longer the tappet is audible when restarting. If left for a few hours, it'll clack for about 10 seconds. If left for days, it'll clack on for a minute or so. Still, a very painful sound. What?s confusing me (easily done!) is why when the noise stops, it stops all of a sudden and not a gradual fade?

I'm going to ask the garage for their opinion on Tuesday, (already had it booked in for an oil, oil filter and coolant change) but in the likely event of the noise continuing, I?m going to ask for a quote for repair. Am I right in thinking that it's a relatively straightforward job on this unit? Also, if its only one tappet that?s shot, can you replace just one and in any case, how long do you think it would take an experienced garage to do (then I can work out the cost).

Sorry for all the questions

I don't think you need to worry, I don't expect you drive it that hard anyway.

Hi

I have just had a new timing belt fitted to my 2000 Astra Coupe, the care was running perfectly before i had it done.

I drove the car out of the garage and it seemed to feel very sluggish. When its idleing, the rev counter is jumping all over the place, and almost goes to stall, then revs itself a bit to keep it running. You can also feel the car shuddering when you are sat it in. When you are driving, and come to stop, the car will now frequently stall.

I took the car straight back, and they told me it was nothing to do with the cam belt, it was the the throttle body that needed cleaning out to sort it. They did this, and its just as bad.

Im presuming that this is connected with the timing belt, and theyve just messed it up? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks
Steve

SteveD, nothing wrong with pattern parts in general. Who do you suppose makes belts & tensioners for the VM's? I think what this story highlights is that there are a number of poorly trained and ill-equipped workshops out there, which blights the good name of the independent garages who undertake training & purchase the correct tensioning/locking tools.
