Has anyone out there had trouble removing wiper arms from their posts? I have a Passat, 1998 vintage and my wife has a Mk.4 Golf, on attempting to clean out leaves and debris, the plenum cover/fairing has to be removed, this entails removing the wiper arms. I know that they are on a splined shaft, but, they are very reluctant to come off, is there a special tool available?
All comments much appreciated!

I can't tell you how easy they come off but when mine were done by VW they cracked the windscreen, presumably by levering against it. Forewarned etc....... Good luck!

I have never ever needed a special tool to remove wiper arms and having worked in the motor trade for 10 years I have removed and refitted quite a few. I have found that the best method is to fold the arm up so it is at 90 degrees to the base, then grasp the arm firmly with both hands and yank it vertically up and down to release the grip of the splines. I can't ever remember breaking one using this method either.

agreed simon, but i put leather gloves on first in case of blood.

Thanks to all who replied, I managed to remove the remaining wiper arm in the manner described by the man "in the trade".
Much appreciated!
