Hi,
Hope someone can help. I need to respray my alloys as the salt has started to cause the paint to flake off and bubble. Not sure why - didn't think alloys rusted.
Anyway, has anyone done a DIY job of respraying alloys - what spray should I use and where can I get some from.
Any advice appreciated.
Many thanks.

i recently sold my 1989 driver.. its either gonna run like a dream or... man ur gonna have some fun!
the best advice i can give is a webber. the carbs are terrible, iceing up, overfueling, choking its self at idle, high eratic idle, misfires, flat spots, overun ( after ignition is turned off ) ... the best thing i did to my pierberg was changed the vacuum pipes with halfords washer jet pipping, it selted and lowered the idle alot. the other thing has been mentioned.. that tiny pipe from the exhuast manifold and the flap on the intake are essential during these cold times!
i have an 1995 mk 3 golf and the mileometer and clock have started to fail.it now shows half of some numbers and none in some columns. is this a common problem and can it be rectified without replacing the whole unit? Read more
On my Polo the same happened. If you thump the dashboard it works again so a bad connection is likely.
Hi. Can anyone tell me how to bleed a new master/slave clutch cylinder and connector block for my 1991 nissan. I have tried but can't get any pressure on the clutch pedal.

Hi. Many thanks for the info. Will give it a go.
Arnie.
I currently drive an 04 Leon 130 TDI bought almost a year ago with c.10k on the clock - have topped 30k miles this year and this will continue for the forseeable future as my job involves a lot of driving.
Problem -Love the car but a 5 month old baby has proved what a bad choice on the practicality front this car was last year.
1 - boot space nowhere near enough to comfortably fit in buggy and other travel essentials on a trip. Frequent trips to London for few days at a time has brought this into sharp focus. The car effectively becomes a 3 seater as luggage spills over onto the rear passenger set.
2- leg room for the front seat passenger woeful when the baby seat is installed behind. My partner tops 6" and is desperately uncomfotable on any trips of 15 miles or more.
Am leaning towards a diesel estate - as being able to put buggy in lengthways would be a joy, along with other luggage.
No finance outstanding on the Leon - I paid cash. I am undure what I would pick up part-ex - rear OS door has a dent in it which I have been quoted £600 to repair - but I have £1500 on top of what I will get in part-ex to purchese the right car this time.
I know this is not the best way to run a car, and I am going to be losing heavily on the deal, but I think I will just have to put this one down as a lesson learnt.
Your suggestions for suitable vehicles within this budget to look at would be great. has to be a diesel due to heavy mileage that I get through.
Thanks

My current CRV is now 30 months old and I fancy a new one, it's been an excellent car except for, as an only car it's a little bit thirsty for everyday running around. Honda now do the diesel CRV which gets good write-ups and at the moment they have a "free" upgrade ie buy the petrol SE and we'll give you the diesel?? Nice offer, but I have scoured the mag's and can see no sign of a New CRV on the horizon. Now I am aware you normally get nothing for nothing but if I am in the market for a new CRV it seems to good an offer to miss. Any of the backroomers aware of a new CRV due, or am I being to cynical and the offer is just a reflection on the state of the market.

Your market research would appear to be spot on. Having
checked today`s Autocar on future 4 x 4 launches for
2006, there is no mention of a replacement CRV on the
horizon for this year at least.!!!!!
it must be right then!

Hi
I'm thinking about buying my first diesel soon and I'm wondering if lots of short runs and cold starts kills diesel engines as much as it does petrol engines? Read more
SWMBO's 1993 Peugeot 106 1.4 diesel bought new has now travlled just over 44,000 miles. It has had regular annual oil and filter changes (by me). Average journey length must be 1 mile. Then restarted again after 2-3 hours when throughly cold.
The engine runs as new. I occasionally (every 2-3 weeks) drive it hard to 70mph on the A500 round Stoke on Trent. SMBO travels at 30 mph in town but does keep the revs up (it does not hve the torque to do below 30mph in 4th gear).
Oil usage between changes? About 0.5 litres per 2,000 miles.
55 mpg or thereabouts.
No engine problems at all.
(2 new cambelts - every 5 years, new front and middle exhaust sections, orginal rear section(!) , driveshaft, disks, rear wheel cylinders etc.. but touch wood engine ok.4 new glowplugs, new top hose)
Moral: keep them well maintained and they will last.
(She had two Mini Estates before this car: required decarbonising after 3 years... and new exhausts - even ss ones - every 4-5 years).
So in our 13 years experience modern diesles well maintained are much better at stop start driving.
(3 batteries : 2 ex Halfords - 1 under warranty- lasted only 3 years each. Last one purchased was heavy duty from local Motor Factor £40 2 year gntee.. Wait and see what happens. Get hammered in winter.. alternator belt tension must be correct to avoid slipping/poor charging).

My UK car insurance certificate with MMA is entirely in English. No green card can be issued or necessary now apparently for EU.
Asked my broker was this normal and they said situation was the same for all companies they deal with.
IIRC I used to have a multilingual declaration on the back of an old certificate.
May be legal- but what can French/German etc. do on being confronted with such an unhelpful monoglot document. And vice versa of course.

Thanks for this info - does this cover you if you
were working in an EU country for the whole 6 months
for example?
Also, do they have to know where the car will be
parked in the EU country or is it a 'use it
anywhere you want in the EU for 6 months' arrangement?
No. You have no need to inform them of where and when you are going.
If you are over 50, Saga allow you to remain in the EU for 364 days. I was with them but don't need that length of time, and Liverpool Victoria was £70 cheaper.
Hello everyone, this is my first post on here. I have an 83k mile TDI 130 Passat estate and am considering replacing it with a new or newer model. With regard to a brand new model I am looking at putting down a deposit of around £4k and financing the rest via a PCP and have my eye on the TDI 140 SE estate. Can anyone suggest what sort of deal I ought to be looking at here in terms of price for the car and apr for the finance? An alternative is a nearly new old shape model: I have found a < 1 year old TDI 130 sport estate with less than 10k on the clock priced around 14k.Is this a good deal or would I be better buying the new model? I am thinking of selling my existing one on ebay. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you. Read more
Reet - the 110bhp Passat can be chipped to 143bhp (81kW to 105kw). Torque increases from 173 ft/lb to 214 ft/lb (or 235NM to 290NM). Claims for fuel economy are:
Constant 56mph - Inc from 64mpg to 65mpg
Constant 75mph - Inc from 47mpg to 48mpg
City - Inc from 39mpg to 42mpg
My best mpg since being chipped was 59mpg, worse (without towing) 44mpg.
Upsolute are the bee's knees are far as I'm concerned. It was chipped at 140,000 odd and I've (touch wood) had no problems other than a perished turbo pipe (£70). My previous car (Pug 406) was also chipped with no issues.
Just remember to tell the insurance!!!!

Unless you've got all the kit used by the professionals to get back to bare metal and start again, I wouldn't DIY it, even if I felt competent to do so. I would think that any patch repair is going to fail pretty quickly and won't look good. Alloys do corrode, because road salt and other nasties get between the paint (or lacquer) and the metal.
There are plenty of reasonably priced professional places around; a search of the forum will reveal some of them. I recently had my Golf VR6 wheels done at:
www.wheelrefurbishing.co.uk/
It's worth shopping around, as prices do vary between £30ish and £60ish a wheel.
