buying Passat - charlesa
Hello everyone, this is my first post on here. I have an 83k mile TDI 130 Passat estate and am considering replacing it with a new or newer model. With regard to a brand new model I am looking at putting down a deposit of around £4k and financing the rest via a PCP and have my eye on the TDI 140 SE estate. Can anyone suggest what sort of deal I ought to be looking at here in terms of price for the car and apr for the finance? An alternative is a nearly new old shape model: I have found a < 1 year old TDI 130 sport estate with less than 10k on the clock priced around 14k.Is this a good deal or would I be better buying the new model? I am thinking of selling my existing one on ebay. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

This probably isn't the advice you're looking for, but I guess the first question would be why do you want to be rid of your existing Passat? It's only done 83k - and is easily capable of triple that with good maintenance.

Why not keep the Passat and treat you and your significant other to a top notch holiday with the savings?

Thanks Dieselboy, that's exactly the advice I'm looking for.I'm driving around 25k miles a year at the moment and you think that my existing car can cope with that without the costs starting to build dramatically ? I must say,it had a major service 1 week ago and they said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car.

Do not put your hard earned money on a brand new passat.

Never buy a new car within the first year of its introduction.

I´d go along with that one, TVM - they´ll be ironing out the creases of the new Passat for a while yet.
Charles, think about upding the frequency of servicing on your current Passat as it gets older. At what intervals do you change the oil/filter etc? I´ve been recommended to go to 6k for both now my Astra is getting on. Other posters will have a clear idea of what to look out for when taking these engines up to high mileage (not that 83k is, but YKWIM).

I now have one of the outgoing model Passat 130 Highline TDI
estates....they were going for just under 16k brand new from my local dealer (3k under list) and they offered 2k more for my old Volvo than anyone else (4k compared to 2k). OK its the old model but we are very pleased and it worked out cheaper than a nearly new car (price to change) off the same garage forecourt.

So 14k for a one year old doesnt sound too good,

My local VW specialist/independent (looked after my Passat and now looks after my Fabia) has told me that he has several VW TDi PD's visit him for servicing with over 250,000 miles on them still going well with no major parts replacing including the costly injectors that everyone warns about.

Especially as yours has been given a clean bill of health, I'd be tempted to run it for another three years doing as barchetta man says on the servicing. Save yourself an awful lot of hard earned then if you're still hankering after the new model you could pick up a two year old one which gives VW 12 months to iron out any new model problems and seeing if the new Tdi 140 engine proves reliable.

Thanks Nathnamdo but I'm having 2nd thoughts after the responses to my thread.I'll let you know if I decide to do anything.

I ran a 02 51 golf with the same engine upto 120,000mls with no problems!

Well, mine isn't a PD but I'm upto 181,000 miles with (touch wood) no major problems.

Around the 130,000 mile mark you'll find yourself spending a bit on suspension arms at the front, but that should be about it.

I do a similar mileage to you and have only just replaced front disks and pads after 60,000. Cambelt is every 60,000, which isn't too expensive (£200).

I've had several debates with myself as to whether to change or not and I've come to the conclusion of "better the devil you know". It may be dull but at least I know I can consistently get 55mpg and most of components I've changed in the last 50,000 miles won't go for another 120,000 or so.

Thanks Dieselboy. Actually I don't find mine dull at all. I love the mid range torque, ability to cruise quickly and quietly at speed and generally robust feel.

Hmm, I don't know why I said dull. Mine is the 110bhp model which is chipped to about 145bhp. Mid range is magnificant. I suppose as mine is getting on a bit I hardly ever make use of all that torque!!

Yours can be chipped to 163bhp, upping the torque from 229 ft/lb (310NM) to 288 ft/lb (390NM). Put in simple terms, that's more torque than a chipped Porsche Boxter S 3.2 280!! (okay, I know it can't be compared but you get my drift!).

Visit www.upsolute.com for more details... Mine was about £300 fully installed at home.

Tell me more about the chipping, DB. SWMBO's car is a 99 110 TDi which averages just under 49mpg, but has only the most gentle push from the turbo. Not looking for a tyre-shredder, but what could be done?
buying Passat - Wee Willie Winkie
Reet - the 110bhp Passat can be chipped to 143bhp (81kW to 105kw). Torque increases from 173 ft/lb to 214 ft/lb (or 235NM to 290NM). Claims for fuel economy are:

Constant 56mph - Inc from 64mpg to 65mpg
Constant 75mph - Inc from 47mpg to 48mpg
City - Inc from 39mpg to 42mpg

My best mpg since being chipped was 59mpg, worse (without towing) 44mpg.

Upsolute are the bee's knees are far as I'm concerned. It was chipped at 140,000 odd and I've (touch wood) had no problems other than a perished turbo pipe (£70). My previous car (Pug 406) was also chipped with no issues.

Just remember to tell the insurance!!!!
