Just as a matter of interest, does anyone know where late model Subaru Legacy are built? I know that a few years back (late 90's) UK-market cars were shipped in from Subaru's US plant. Read more
Hi there,
I am relatively new to this site... please be gentle with me. I have a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GTi T reg which unfortunately skidded and hit a pole while we were on holiday in North Wales on New year. The damage looks quite extensive to the front left with some damage to the engine and the battery as well. It looks like a write off to me although the inssurance Engineers are coming to see it. I had bought it on E bay last May for £2250 which I thot was a bargain.
Anyways, now I am looking to buy another Japanese car in a similar price range. I am looking for a 4/5 door car, small to mid sized and made in 2000 or later and ideally less than 50,000 miles. I am in London but can travel if find a good bargain. I was also looking at japanese cars like Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Yaris, Avensis, Nissan Almera. Skoda fabia and the VW Polo.. and these would be quite good as well. I need the car for the weekends only and I wount use it for commuting.
Any suggestions!!!
Many thanks for looking in. Read more
Sorry I meant Toyota Corolla 1.6 GLS and not GTi
I have had the above car in the VW garage 3 times and they have finally decided that a squeak in the axle areas when moving is caused by the brakes needing deglazing (?) - not sure that is the right term. They said it could be because I brake too softly (!). They are asking £220 to do this which seems exorbitant and more like the cost of replacing them altogether. Anyone have any experience of this problem or comments on the cost ? Apparently this problem is not included in the warranty. The car is about 18 months old. Read more
front or back of car.deglazing is when pads or shoes are used heavily causing a glaze on surface of both, wont account for price, but have they actually investigated, or this price springs to mind to charge.
Dont seem right anyway, could you please explain more on squeek problem ie where you think its coming from.when it occurs

Got a 1995 Audi 80 TDI, but there seems to be a problem when you try and rev the engine above 2500 RPM.... When the Turbo kicks in its not a constant increase, Instead it pulses
Anybody got any idea why this is happening ?
Tried all the connections and pipes to the turbo and they seem fine. Read more
Don't automatically blame the maf:
When my '94 Passat 90bhp TDi (very similar engine to the Audi80) developed a surging under load (like fuel starvation), my VW dealer changed the maf, but the symptoms remained. Took it back, they said they couldn't reproduce the problem so I took the Service Manager out there and then to demonstrate the surging; without prompting he refunded the full cost...
(There were no fault codes logged in my ecu, but a similar (unresolved) problem in the Dr Diesel column in Diesel Car talked about an 'excess pressure' fault. Eventually my dealer, now with another car with the same problem, traced the problem to a faulty wastegate controller - a cruciform device on the engine bulkhead.)
Well done, accurate and right to the point. I love my C-Max 2.0 TDCi Ghia and rank it as one of the best cars I have ever owned. Maybe I'm getting older (heading for 50) but there's nothing out there I want to change it for. Read more
Fair cross-examination, No Wheels.
Sorry! That did read as a bit of a cross-examination. But thanks for the answers.
Vandalism damage to my car. £45 bill: not enough to claim and no police report but need I inform my insurance company anyway? Read more
It would be recorded as a crime. There used to be a, Home Office guided, value of £20.00 whereby a crime would not be recorded in respect of damage, I believe that was abolished some years ago - perhaps a Police Officer on the site could confirm ?
Nominations for the putty medal are invited!!
Which single individual or idea has had the most detrimental effect on motoring since its dawn.
My nomination is the idea of putting water, gas and electricity mains under our roads so that every time they need to be repaired or replaced the road needs to be dug up and patched (badly).

Can any one tell me where the fuel filter is located on a citroen xantia 18.i and how to go about changing it, cheers Read more
Under the rear of the car, on the RH(drivers side) of the fuel tank. It is clamped in place with a bolt. You have to drop it clear, then de-pressurise the system, undo the pipe clips on the old one, remove the pipes and replace the filter.
Note which way round the filter has to go.(should be marked with an arrow).
You may find that you will need new jubilee clips for the pipes, the ones fitted may be the cut to remove type.
I have always got a good supply of rag ready and de-pressurised the system by taking a pipe off. I will point out that this is not the safest way to do it, but not much fuel does come out. Leaving the car overnight helps to reduce the pressure.
Make sure the car is well supported before going underneath it, they ain't half heavy!

Greg Wilson says it's Lafayette, Indiana, although I don't recognise the 02 car:

This other article makes the same assertion:

And it looks like the 2005 Legacy comes from the same factory:

Whether they only make them there, I don't know...
