Hi,

Please could someone give me a basic rundown of when I need things such as the timing belt changed? Thanks, Darren Read more

No cam belt on these. The chain should last forever, but replace if it rattles.

For more specific servicing for your car's age/mileage, look at www.etis.ford.com/fordservice/serviceScheduleForm....o

Personally I would do...

Every 6 months (6000 miles):

- Renew oil and filter

Every 12 months (12,000 miles):

- Check and re-gap spark plugs
- Clean out air filter housing

Every 24 months (24,000 miles):

- Renew air filter
- Renew brake fluid
- Renew pollen filter

The coolant system will not need refilling for a few years, check the Extended Period Maintenance items at the bottom of the service schedule page from the link above.

Only 3 days into 2006 & seen my 1st 2 candidates for muppet of the year. Driving my truck on the M6 this morning (4am) at the M6/A442/M6 toll junction I noticed a fellow in a Rover 25 reverse from the chevrons back across the slip road onto the hard shoulder. No2 muppet was the guy only 2 mins later driving from the unlit to lit section in the same area with no lights on with all n sundry flashing him but he carried on regardless.
Looks like its going to be a good year :-) Read more

First post since before Christmas, so a bit of catching up to do, happy new year to you all, hope you had a good break.

Can anyone recommend a laser alignment service in North Somerset / Bristol, full four wheel, castor, camber and toe in/out?

Many thanks. Read more

My father died not long before Christmas and is survived by my mother. One of my tasks is to notify all and sundry of his death including DVLA about his car.(1.3 Totota Yaris 21/2 yrs old - 5500 miles). I followed precisely the way to advise DVLA by reading the guidance notes that come with the V5 "log book". This included, as demanded, a covering letter explaining why I was transferring the keeper of the vehicle to his wife/widow.

Those morons have now sent a letter to the poor old dead chap thanking him for being told of the change and also telling him to ignore any future letters to him from DVLA.

Surely their fancy system has a "death" letter to be used in these circumstances.

I want to make a fuss. Who do I complain to? The letter was signed by a 8< snip 8< and I doubt if he exists.

Although I do sympathise with you over the loss of your father, the person who *may* have been responsible for the letter doesn't warrant his name being aired in a public forum. DD Read more

Even if they are signed, you don't seriously think that they check the signature, do you?

no but they could use it against you if the new keeper didnt exist and was still running your ex vehicle,so the advise is make sure new keeper signs the v5c and puts their date of birth as well. This is also a legal requirement that way you cannot be done for not supplying details to swansea,Make sure you as seller sends left hand side to swansea as well unless you are selling on to the trade, this is also your legal duty and is in your own interest.

I will have had my Suzuki Bandit 600 3 years shortly and am ready for a change. It is my first "proper" bike and I've enjoyed it, but I would like a bit more weather protection, a taller seat, softer suspension and a change in engine noise. Power (although it sounds like heresy) is not really relevant; I hardly ever use all of the Bandit's 80 bhp as it is, except when overtaking 2-up. My current favourite is the Suzuki 650 V-strom which seems to answer all my criteria; has anyone any experience of these bikes or would anyone care to suggest an alternative?

I like the look of the V-strom, too. The engine is well-proven and a bit more low-end grunt may well substitute for a few top-end horsepower. The mags I've read are rude about the V-strom's looks, but then I also like the Kawasaki ER-6...

Looking for some suggestions and possibly comments from anyone who has owned the above.

After toying with the idea of buying a 944 a while back to run along with my Mondeo, I have now changed plan completely. The Mondeo has gone and I am now after some suggestions for a new (used) car.

Requirements are as follows: -

Must be FAST.
Auto preferred.
Lots of toys.
Looking for something that will cruise effortlessly on the motorway and be relaxing but give a smile on the twistys .

I had a brief go in a Toyota Soarer 2.5TT. This may be a contender but I'm not really a fan of the styling.

Thoughts so far have been VR-4 (legnum), Legacy Twin Turbo, Toyota Aristo (Lexus GS)? (Very hard to find) or a big engine 5 series.

Budget is around 6k.

I can recommend the VR4, superb.

So are the V8 5 series though...

I've currently got a peugeot 306L 1.9 Diesel, t reg. I have seen a vauxhall astra envoy tdi 1.7 (52 plate) and am busy comparing the two to figure out should i go for the astra as my new car.

Whilst the 306 is lovely to drive, we do a couple long journeys a year in it, and we could use more space. I've no doubt that the 306 could go on running indefinately, it's a 1999 reg and only on 44k at the moment. the astra is at 33k.

What do you think i should do?
Oh and the astra is priced at £4995. unsure what i'd get for the 306 for part ex.

Check the engine code on your 306 - DHX or DHY. One of these, I can't remember which, is prone to con-rod failure which means a new engine. Check yours out (details on this site), it might influence your decision.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago on the moterway that my oil warning light came on after I had to brake very hard. The light went off after a couple of seconds. I was abit bored earlier so tryed a bit of brake testing and after a couple of goes I managed to do it again. Is this the decelerating force pushing the oil to the front of the engine?????

Thanks Read more

Just out of interest what percentage of the oil volume is being circulated round engine at any one time, eg, sump holds 5 litres how much would be in left in sump when engine is running, as the oil is used to assist cooling the more in the sump the better.

Have just taking my Renault Laguna for service in Germany, two extra problems Headight out cost ?160(mugged by Renault)the other problem ABS light sometimes come on .The problem was a section of the ABS wiring had been repaired at some time with electricians connector block on one side and through crimps on the other.Themechanic had never seen such a botch job in his life, when I told him it had only been in Renault garages in the UK during its life as a lease car, he found it hard to believe no matter who was the culprit can you understand the mentality of someone who would do that to the brakes as a repair. Also the so called reputal garage where it was bought with its 60 point safety check.Needless to say I shall be having words when I return to the UK.
