Or at least that's probably the cause, according to the manual. The immobiliser light is flashing, and the engine just makes a loud ticking noise when you turn the key. Anyone got any ideas what to do about this? Read more
Any BRoomers bought one of these new Yaris as yet, - have been waiting for H.J`s test drive appraisal and was wondering if that was on the near horizon or not???
Test reports from some of the motoring magazines have commented positively, but slated the very high pricing. Read more
Hi all,
Friend from Poland has just moved over here, is buying a car and obviously needs to insure it.
He is using his Polish license for now - how long does he have before he must change it for a UK one?
Also, do any BRs know of a good insurance company that will cover foriegn visitors? He is only looking for TPFT I think as car (the Rover Metro I was asking about before!) is only going to him for about £550.
TIA

For a Rover Metro 1.1, he was quoted £525 fully comp (but that was using a price runner type website)
Maybe he should get a Merc instead!
what a bad week were having ,this is our 2nd caravelle gone wrong ,the problem is on this that all the instrument gauges go down and at the same time the battery is getting very hot and bubbling ,1 month ago it had a new alternator fitted from vw as the battery would be flat every morning and this cured that but now we have the opposite effect but a battery totally overcharged ??????? thanks for your replys ,indeed weve found it to be a re-con alternator and on getting a friend to test it ,it is pushing near 16 volt into the battery hence the cooked battery and dials shutting down .
Did anyone see the first installment last Monday on BBC? A cop from 2006 goes back in time to 1973. We are not sure whether he is imagining it while in a coma or if he is really there. Anyway the point of this post is to talk about the array of Seventies cars on the sets which brought back memories. There's a Mk111 Cortina for instance. I had one and it was the worst motor I ever had, the camshafts kept wearing out ever 20000 miles. Mk11s were best. I loved my Marina though
While police tactics were tougher in those days the cars were certainly not.
Any car owners or of the Seventies got a comment? Read more

Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI on flexible servicing.
One year old 8000 miles No service warning but did not like going over 1 year so had a service. VW 506.01 oil.
After 12 miles checked dip stick. Oil is black. Not tinged black but black. Got the oil can in the boot -they had used 4.5 litres approx.out of it but maybe not in my car.
Have a horrible feeling someone thought --this car has miles to go before the oil is done for so how about not changing it.
Question --should the oil on the dipstick still look like cloudy corn oil after only 12 miles or is it so thin and penetrating that it will have stirred up muck and gone black in such a short time? How much black muck would there be to disperse into 4.5 litres of oil ? Enough for this effect?
Thanks
PS What if anything can I do about it if it is a scam?

As advised check around the drain plug
and filter for evidence.
Just be aware that if they did suck the oil out (quite a lot of main dealers do now) they won't have touched the drain plug.
Hello All
I have a Golf TDi '96. Recently after a short journey on the motorway the glowplug light began to flash. Does anybody have any idea as to what the possible reasons might be?
Is it dangerous to continue to drive it? I've just been for a drive now but it didn't flash, it seems to be intermittent.
Thanks in advance. Read more
Yes same here. There are two switches. One had fallen off and was dangling on its bit of wire, popped it back in light stopped flashing. Good luck.
PS The flashing light can mean other things as well. I think it flashes when the ECU registers a fault code.
Hi there,
driving home last night my 1995 306 S16 deceided not to idle correctly......
basically when you come off the gas she either die's or idels roughly.......
I have checked the following:
Air Filter
Vacum Hoses
Replaced the fuel filter
fuel feed okay
The car drives fine and there is no stuttering whilst driving, but just plays up on idle. She will start with the accelerator pressed.......I'm new the petrol world......more of a diesel guy...one thing I'm not too sure about..
Whilst under the bonnet.....manually accelerate the throttle body...I can here a distint sucking coming from the around the inlet manifold just as I accelerate..I can not tell if it is internal or external, but it is there....before I go removing the inlet manifold does nay one know if this normal...I know on many petrols you can here the a slight suck on first accel, but I'm not sure.....
cheers

If you want help with all things PUG pop over to www.pughosting.co.uk/forum and say hello.
Is there any way I can determine what exactly is causing the spongeyness?
Here's what I do know
Engine off brakes spongey but can be built up after pumping and remain good, until engine started, then they are spongey and remain spongey whilst driving. Very rarely a bit of pumping with engine runing can solidify brakes.
Brake fluid level constant
This to me means it's not air, it's not the vacuum, could be the hoses expanding - I will try to inspect them.
Leaves only the master cylinder......Is this what you think? Read more
>>I don't think it is a leak because the level is not going down.
If only a small leak, that will cause it without any evidence of fluid drop.thing is *if* it is a leak air will enter,I would make it first thing to check for, then look deeper

My Astra (1999 1.6) has been off the road for 8 weeks being repaired following a minor accident. After getting it back on Wednesday I drove it to and from work on Thursday and Friday. Each time I've started it it's taken a while to get started, a couple of times the alarm has gone off in the process, and each time the radio has displayed 'safe' and refused to go on (after RTFM I've entered the code and got it to work, but have to do this each time I start the engine). The information display also tells me it's 00.00 on 01.01.1997!
The first time I thought the battery was simply a bit flat after its time off the road. However each time I've driven it to work I've started it again in the car park to see if the run has helped it but the same problems occur.
The accident was on the near-side front corner and I suppose it's possible the battery was damaged or somehow 'upset' during the accident but it seems like a long shot.
Is the battery on the way out? Given that I've never had any battery problems before the accident or the repairs, could it have been caused by either the accident or the 8 weeks off the road? If so could I perhaps claim a new battery from the guy's insurance company?
Cheers, John Read more
If the battery has been left discharged for 8 weeks, then it will be knackered. Unlike NiCads, lead acid batteries shouldn't be left flat.

Yep, was a flat battery. I've never had one so flat before that you didn't even get the usual slow attempt to turn over noise.
