Hi,
my (new to me) car has developed a serious 'creaking' noise when steering to the right. Whether the car is stationary or moving, I can acually feel the creak in the pedals. If I steer quickly to the right, its a quick 'creak', steer slow its a slow 'creeeeeak'.

Do steering racks creak? If so, is the cure a hand full of grease? Or could it just be the suspension as the car is very low and stiff and dosn't have much suspension travel. Or is it worse?

Just curious really! How many of you would take out a "return to invoice" policy on a nearly new car? Read more
Three's two types of GAP insurance. Return to invoice value, and repay the outstanding finance if greater than the insurance payout.
Have just watched the new ad. for Honda - (the choir in the underground carpark) -absolutely gripping!
I saw the first new Civic 'in the metal' yesterday in a local car park. A stunning looking car; I'd like to try reverse parking with it before I bought one, though..

Yeah, I've seen the ad for the new Honda - or something - and?
anyone dealt with the above trader based in France? I want to buy a ?22000 car from them and they want ?3000 as a deposit, which is fair enough. Can anyone reassure me they're OK or suggest how I might protect my deposit in case they don't deliver or tunr out to be bogus? Paying by credit card is the obvious choice but the dealer doesn't accept them, saying the costs for a French business are prohibitive. I've been asked to pay the balance on delivery of the car, but again, how can I be sure the dealer had legal title to sell? Any thoughts/tips very welcome. Thanks
P.S. In case you're wondering, it's a French car for use in France, where I'm moving later this year.

if you are concerned, and it sounds like you are on several different levels it would probably be best to leave them and when you get to France buy from your local dealer, the same as you would in the UK.
Wife's Clio is seven years old, we have had it serviced two yearly by a Renault dealer (inc a cambelt change) which meets Renault's service schedule, i.e. it has FRSH. Two year gaps is too long by my book so I have done intermediate oil changes plus changed the plugs myself and checked the brakes etc.
Question: Should we invest 100 to 150 quid in another dealer service or should I do it all DIY now? Will the lack of dealer service history really effect the value of a 7 year old car?

Clio servicing in my neck of the woods is £189 then £289 alternately. Only apparent difference is spark plugs.
Seems well expensive to me and even more surprising now hearing that Genuine parts are not ridiculously expensive.
Maybe £50 parts (retail) so do they spend over two hours doing a service. Doubt it very much!

Helo all, can anyone tell me the points gap for my 89 1.0 micra?
I set them to 0.28m as a roadside emergency coz it started running very poor and it turned out the points were not secure. It does run pretty smooth but i only guessed the gap so i would like to adjust them to proper spec
Also am i right in thinking there are NO websites that will list the spec of all cars? Many thanks for any replies Read more
Dieselhead and DD sound about right, last one I sorted-adjusted to 19 thou old value,I think 16 slightly too small a gap but should get away with,0.28 I think is around 11 thou

I am thinking of buying a warranty for a four year old Picasso from the above. Has anyone had any experience of them (good or bad) ?
Many thanks

Hi
I have a 98R 1.8 Petrol Vectra. Does anybody know where the rev counter takes it's input from?
I have a problem in that occasionally when driving at through traffic in 2nd or 3rd gear (possibly when I am easing off the throttle but can' swear to it) the engine gives a jolt - hiccup and within a few seconds the rev counter needle oscillates wildly for ~ 5 ? 10 seconds (actual engine speed sounds constant) and then the engine stalls when clutch is depressed.
Up until recently this has only happened when the petrol tank is less than ¼ full however it happened today with a ¾ full tank.
When restarted the engine management light may stay on for a little bit before going out and engine runs fine.
I am interested to see why the rev counter is acting the way it does which may help me isolate the fault. I plan to change the fuel filter as a first step as it probably needs doing anyways. The fault codes stored in the ECU as far as I can tell relate to an issue I had about 3 years ago, if I can find the Radio code I will clear the ECU to make sure.
Any help appreciated.

Excelent advice. Crank and Cam sensor both replaced (belt and braces) and so far so good.
Thanks
One of the most irritating things about standing in WHSmith reading the weekly car mags is the 'scoop' images they put out, inferring that that is how the car will look. A recent one which springs to mind was one of the new Corsa. I also remember seeing one for how the new Civic would look, which basically looked like a big Jazz. Completely wrong.
I can see the point of concept cars, giving a taster of a msnufacturer's new design direction, but a magazine's own image, based on not alot, seems a rather sad way to try and sell magazines. Does anyone else recall any howlers, where the magazines got it wrong?

Presumably after the scoop pix of the Granada Scorpio were made public Ford decided it was too late to stop the car going into production - the disguise on it was there for a good reason...

Since then a man called Jan a high tech mech from QR Sport Tattenhall has sorted it. It was the steering column under the dash - a triangular section that has a telescopic insert within a nylon bush. The bush had dried causing this horrendous noise. Lubricated - done and dusted.
