October 2005
Hi, I've posted this all over the place and no one is responding and I'm getting desperate. I own a peugeot 106 phase 1, 1995 1.1 petrol.
Basically I filled it up both oil and coolant last week and the car is running sweet. However i noticed at the weekend that the coolant seems very oily and I had a tiny bit of mayo on the radiator header tank (which is bolted to the rad on the 1.1).
I read in the haynes manual that on some models the coolant goes through the oil cooler so would this explain the oily coolant?....or is there a bigger problem I should worry about here?
The car runs fine all the time and no signs of overheating or any other problem. I'm just worried the head gasket is on the way out and i have big bills ahead.
Can anyone please help as I'm not near a garage and will have to try and fix this myself unless its a serious problem
Cheers

Both actually:-

It reminds me of one of those Dutch contraptions they showed on Top Gear once.
Personally I wouldn't be seen dead in one.

It appears to have 4 wheels, hence not a motorbike on your definition?
Once upon a time I thought that the motorbike definition had something about no reverse gear. Or am I mistaken? I think I remember some 3 wheel cars that could have reverse gear disabled to allow them to be driven on a motorcycle licence.

I have an 03(May) Mondeo Zetec TDCi with the 9-spoke alloy wheels current on that model. The paint on all the wheels is bubbling with corrosion and I could peel it off in sheets by pulling gently with one finger, leaving a powdery corroded bare alloy surface underneath. The Ford badges in the wheel centres are also white and discoloured with corrosion and quite unsightly. When I complained to the Ford main dealer where I get it serviced he said that the anti-corrosion warranty didn't cover it. Moreover, as he didn't know the history of the car, the wheels might have been refurbished/resprayed and could be much older than the car, and thats what you get when you buy from car supermarkets (I bought it from a Ford dedicated Supermarket at 6 months /7000 miles and the wheels were immaculate then). I think Ford only introduced that 9 spoke model with the 03 plate so that can't be right. Can anyone out there confirm that? The inside of the wheels have large bare areas where the paint has peeled off completely and my local tyre technician tells me they are definitely not resprays. Has anyone else had this happen, and if so, what did you do? Surely the paint shouldn't fall off after only two and a half years? Read more
Philter,
Yes you're probably right. I forgot about the paints applied to the alloy first. I say paints as there may be a primer applied before the silver colour. However, the surface preparation details still stand. The polyurethane laquer will not be a water based paint, but I don't know about others...they may be water based.
The only problem areas on my alloys are where damage was caused as balancing weights were pulled off. Here the alloy coating has been flaked away. The whitish corrosion has not appeared underneath.
I get the impression that the 9-spoke was introduced before 03. A call to a Ford dealer should answer that.
Can anyone help here .. my Fiat Punto has had its engine inner parts burnt / melt due to a radiator leak which I did not spot , the car continued to run oblivious that it had a leak, the head etc and inner parts have been as stated burnt.
I need to know where what I can do to repair it and where can be recommended to do this ..
Been quoted approx 2k in the Fiat garage .. Read more

No, not trying to restart the debate on that old chestnut again.
I just saw on BBC.co.uk ( news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/coventry_warwickshire/...m ) that they are actually doing an overtaking ban starting next Monday on the M42 NB J10-11.
So backroomers who travel those parts, let's hear your experiences!

Truckersunite has made the real point - smaller vehicles that lack power will cause as many problems.
So why stop with trucks? Bye bye Nissan Micras, old Rovers, all non-Type R Honda Civics.... until all that's left is six cylinder BMWs and Porsches. I do hate being stuck behind a 316!
Or we could just accept that other people have different needs, and that we just have to take account of them. Swings & roundabouts....
Dear All,
My wife has a 1999 T reg (Pre-face-lift) Ford Fiesta 1.2LX in Tourmallard Green. It has Aircon and usual elec windows, central locking etc. Has 22k miles, service history and she is the 3rd owner. It has been HPI checked etc. In very good condition (a few touched up stone chips on the front but otherwise very good).
We are contemplating something a little larger and hence will sell the Fiesta privately.
I do not trust the valuations in What Car? Etc (bourne out when trying to value a friend's Vectra in a previous thread) so would appreciate 'someone who knows' realistic idea of what I would get in a private sale.
Many thanks for your time! Read more
Exactly! My arguement would be that just 1 tyre on the Boxster would cost more than I have spent on the Fiesta in two years!
If you have a rear wiper and the auto park has failed is this a pass in an MOT. Regards Peter Read more

Indeed Cliff.
Self parking wipers?.....Luxury!!

The Triumph Roadster went one better than that. It had three wiper arms, the one in front of the driver being the master knob which set the motor going. The other two had to be locked in manually, if required. After switching off the driver's blade, all had then to be parked manually! The parked position was off the bottom of the windscreen on the chrome frame, not part of the swept area at all.
I am interested in a Corsa easytronic as a replacement for a 205 auto, does anyone have any experiences good or bad of this car. Read more
Drove one on a short test run a view years back. It is not a bad gearshift, once you get used to the idea that you have to take your foot of the throttle to get smooth gear shifts.
At the time, however, the Vauxhall dealer was asking around £12000 for for a GL (I think), which wasn't a very attractive proposition.
My father has a 3 year old Volvo V70 SE estate and recently suffered a blow out when he hit a brick in the road. It took a chunk out of his tyre and broke the alloy wheel.
He got home on the space saver and then went to his Volvo dealer to have the wheel and tyre replaced.
Naturally he had to match the wheel with the remaining 3 and using a space saver he was limited in options.
Upon collecting the vehicle he was presented with a charge of £330 just for the one alloy wheel. The cost of the tyre was expected but the cost of the wheel seems well over the top. He had little choice but to pay it.
I realise that this is a main dealer and the wheels are large but it was the standard wheel that came with this model. As Halfords are able to supply a set of 4 large alloys with tyres fitted for around £400 where do Volvo get off with charging £330 for just one wheel without tyre?
I would appreciate any comments anyone has and whether it is worth contesting. Thanks. Read more
When I read threads like this I realise why I don't
buy a prestige marque. I've also never understood the appeal of
allow wheels, or low profile tyres either.
Safety! All other things being equal, wouldn't you have more control of a car that had low profile tyres versus regular profile tyres, given a situation where you had to swerve to avoid something?
So was it any good? It must have been as advertisements for it keep on popping up, still! I don't mind (too much) popups, but this seems a bit silly, and a waste of bandwidth as the moment has now past. Read more

I've used Halfords Longlife Antifreeze in SWMBO's 106: lasted 12 years so far on original radiator..
