I'm thinking in buying a mk3 VW golf which is blue in colour. the only problem is that the paint is a little faded. The person who is selling the car has t-cut but i can still notice fading marks. Is there any way to restore the colour or would it have to be a respray? The car is now 1- year old. Read more

if its really is just a little faded , then yes you should be able to restore its shine with some carefull use of good products

if you dont fancy having a go yourself then a valeter would charge around £100 or so to machine polish your car

if its gone really chalky looking or you suspect it may have had dodgy paintwork done on it, id suggest you show a valeter/body shop before buying

if you buy it remember to wax the car often to keep it nice

Evening All,

I'm just wondering if anyone on here knows whether it's possible to disable the front passenger air bag in my wife's Astra Coupe?

Little one on the way and we can't afford to change her car at the moment for something more practical!

Thanks,

it's just the same body shell as the 3 door "sport" hatch that is used across the rest of the Astra range isn't it?

Well if you're going to be picky, then yes ;o) The VXR is just the souped up version of the 3 door.

In my defence the Vauxhall website was down last night and I had a quick gander at google images to find it and the VXR was one of the first hits I stumbled across.

The thread about driving to Sheffield reminded me how the rush hour is a completely man-made, or even society made invention. Every day millions of people hit the roads at exactly the same time simply because convention dictates that we all work nine to five. Given that the school run is in full swing between 8 and 9 in the morning it seems crazy to try to get to work before then. Is it time we became a more flexible (even 24 hour) society?

So, who here could or would do the following if their employer allowed it?

(1) Work different hours - ie 4am-1pm or 3pm-midnight?

(2) Work a different week - for example work weekends and take Tuesday and Wednesday off - assuming you had some sort of say in the days you took so you could arrange the same days as your partner?

(3) Work from home? (I expect some people here do that already)

And as a final thought... why do companies refuse to move out of London and into smaller towns? What does a company have to gain from being in central London and Manchester other than employees who have a hell of a commute every day?

According to today's DT, General Motors are selling 9% of their stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru's owners) to Toyota and 11% back to Fuji. Apparently GM are desperate for cash. Does anyone know how much of Fuji GM retains? Hopefully this means Subaru are safe from the GM parts bin. But are Subaru too small to survive as a stand-alone company? Read more

Enjoyed the series one Legacy wagon i kept for 10+ years,it had to go though for a derv estate in the end.

I wonder if the GM pull out will put the blinkers on Subaru`s plans for a boxer diesel that it so desparately needs for it`s European sales or will GM maintain some project links with them thru Izuzu who were rumoured to be in on Scooby`s derv development plans.
Toyota`s 9% holding certainly could have some future influence here.

Received this story from an American friend.

From A Truck Driver in Alabama

But for the Grace of God....

"I just returned from New Jersey. While en route there, I was stuck in traffic on Interstate 81, just below the Virginia state line, (Bristol, Tennessee), due to a traffic accident with a fatality involved. This accident involved a tanker truck hauling a hazardous material load that developed a leak, which meant that we weren't going anywhere for several hours.

After being told by the Tennessee state troopers that we would be sitting still until the clean up was completed, I set my brakes on the truck and got our to stretch my legs. Other truck drivers did the same, and at one point there were 5 of us standing there by my truck, complaining.

Sitting right beside me in the left lane, were two elderly people in a Silverado pick up truck, which was loaded quite well. The man, (Joe), lowered his window and asked what was going on regarding the traffic situation.

Soon we were all talking with this couple. I mentioned that if I had known about this, I would have bought something to drink, (water), for I was becoming thirsty. The lady, (Anna), said that they had plenty of water, and sodas in the cooler in the bed of the truck, and offered everyone present something. While she was back there, she said that she had plenty of tuna salad made up, and asked if we would be interested in a sandwich.

After some urging from Joe, we agreed to a sandwich. While Anna was making the sandwiches on the tailgate of the truck, she was singing like a songbird. To be close to 70, (I guess), she had a remarkable voice.

When she finished making the sandwiches, and putting everything up, Joe raised the tailgate of the truck to close it. I noticed a Mississippi license plate on it. I inquired as to what part of Mississippi they were from. Joe said Biloxi. Knowing that Biloxi had been ravaged also by hurricane Katrina, I asked if they sustained any damage. Joe said that they lost everything but what they had on and what was in the pickup. All of us drivers tried unsuccessfully to pay them for their drinks and the sandwiches. They would have nothing to do with it.

Joe said that their son was living around Harrisonburg, Virginia and that they were going there. He was in the real estate business and that there was a home that became open, and that they were going to start all over there. Staring over at their age would not be easy.

I will soon be 48 years old, and I have say that I have never eaten a tuna sandwich with side orders of reality and humility. These people lost everything except the pictures, important documents, and some clothes. Joe had managed to get their antique heirloom grandfathers clock into the bed of the truck and Anna got her china and silverware, but that was all. These wonderful people lost practically everything they owned and still would not accept any money for their food and drinks. Joe said that "it was better to give than it is to receive."

They sought refuge behind a block wall that he had built years ago, and they watched their belongings and their home disappear in the winds of Hurricane Katrina. Joe said that during all this he had one hand holding onto Anna and the other holding on to God. Their truck and themselves came out of Katrina unscathed.

As I stated before, Anna was singing a song while making the
sandwiched. The song is titled "I know who holds tomorrow," an old gospel song. She knew every word, and was quite a gifted singer of it. Have you ever heard it?

The chorus of this song is, " Many things, about tomorrow, I don't seem to understand. But I know who holds tomorrow, and I know who holds my hand."

There is no doubt, in my mind, Who was holding both their hands. I know there have been many, many e-mails that have circulated over the years about things that will touch your heart, but this one I personally was involved in.

Forget all of the politics that the news is striving on, and think about people just like Joe and Anna. If you can, help out with the victims relief funds.

If you cannot, at least offer a prayer for everyone. Do what you wish with this e-mail, forward it, delete it, whatever.

I know that these two elderly people got to this old boy. I will always remember them. Joe and Anna, if by some strange way you, or someone you know gets this, and shows it to you, God Bless you!

Mike Dowdy, Hartselle, Alabama"

This story certainly brings a lump to your throat.

True or otherwise, these tales are becoming more prevalent via email and web sites. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion about them. Glaikit's view may not be representative, but even if the tale makes one slow down and think for a few moments about where we are etc then it might somewhere serve a purpose.

Nevertheless, I don't think we need these tales propogated here in our motoring forum so I'm locking the thread, similarly the other thread which appeared today which started with a long story.

Have a 1996 Rover 400, which is haemorrhaging coolant. Cannot locate the leak, but think it is from radiator, and am thinking of using radweld.

Any thoughts experiences with this? Read more

Forgive my ignorance but how will I know if it is
a K Series?

All Rover 100s are K-series, apart from diesels.

I have just received the following item in an e-mail from Australia.....it speaks for itself!

"Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 75 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?

When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror.

The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand. Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk further into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow.

Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform.

"Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this."

"Hello, Jack." No smile.

"Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids."

"Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.

"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit -just this once."

Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast! beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?"

"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct."

Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics.

"What'd you clock me at?"

"Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?"

"Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

"Please, Jack, in the car."

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window. The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad.

Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?

Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip.

"Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice.

Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Wait a mi! minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

"Dear Jack,
Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it-a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters All three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left." "Bob"

Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road.. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived.

Life is precious. Handle with care. This is an important message; please pass it along to your friends. Drive safely and carefully. Remember, cars are not the only things recalled by their maker.

Funny how you can send a thousand jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the sanctity of life, people think twice about sharing.

Funny how when you go to forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it to them. Pass this on, you may save a life. Maybe not, but we'll never know if we don't try".

Booked with Premiercarjet. They say on their website:

Our car hire rates are inclusive of all required car hire vehicle insurances like 3rd party responsibility, CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), TW (Theft Waiver) and Bail Bond (where applicable) at Malaga Airport and have no car hire insurance excess, this means that there is no credit card deposit on arrival at Malaga Airport against damage to the car hire vehicle's bodywork and in the event of bodywork damage to the car hire vehicle (like dented panels, broken wing mirrors etc, not : tyres glass wheels etc see below) there is no renter responsibility.

On the booking confirmation / voucher, it says I need a Visa credit card to collect the car - not a Visa debit card. I haven't got a credit card.

Response from Premiercarjet was to put me with a different company, but who will charge a 300 Euro excess. Refund offered if I don't want this.

Is this legal? I thought the terms of the contract as above were binding?

Why do they want a credit card rather than a debit card anyway?

Would you still hire the car on these terms?
