Suddenly, I'm having problems changing gear.
And I mean suddenly, it seemed ok a few days ok.

From rest, I have great difficulties engaging reverse .... resulting in a lot of grinding.

Others seem stiff too, and it is easier to engage 2nd than 1st.

2nd seems to engage as soon as I release clutch pedal.

The car has 42k on the clock.

I'm no expert.

Does this sound like a new clutch required ?

If so , is that an expensive job ?

Might it be something else ?

Thanks in advance Read more

OK - got it sorted !!

I took it to my usual garage, driving most of the way in 2nd gear.

He found a fluid leak where the pipe from clutch pedal meets the gearbox. He replaced the pipe, and the 'plate' (or something) at the gearbox end of the pipe.

Back on the road now for just shy of a hundred notes. Still, I'm sure a new clutch would have cost a lot more. Anyone care to estimate how much ?

Damn! I fixed all that stuff before of it not running righ, that was new plug leads, disi cap rotor arm and plugs.

It ran well for a few runs (I don't use it that often). Today drove into town, waited for missus to finish her appointment. 1hour and half later, it wouldn't start!

It turns over but it's like it has no spark. and the fuel pump wasn't kicking in for a second when the ignition was turned, as it usually does. So I bridged the fuel relay, and tried it but still just like there is no spark.

I had no tools with me - it was hard enough getting a bit of wire to bridge the relay.

Had to come home on the train. I intended to go & get it tonight but got problems with the other car, so I'll hopefully get to go tommorow morning.

So what am I looking for? how about coil? but that wouldn't stop the fuel pump firing up would it?

Hopefully it will start from stone cold and I can drive it home.

It's the same with this car, pump runs for about 1 sec then waits for the key to be turned further. This dirty fuse is stopping the initial pump run and therefore stops the car starting all together. So I am just waiting on it happening again so I can positively identify which fuse it is. Just to satisfy my own curiosity. I could if I wanted to clean all the fuses now and it will never happen again, but I'd rather know which fuse it is before I do that.

It's not the fuel pump fuse because that is a seperate fuse above the main fuse box.

So I have a dead as dodo battery, three days of optimate will eventually give it a green light (but it won't start the car more than once from this state).

After that initial start eg overnight or outside a supermarket. The battery will be flat again.

So what is it that is actually wrong with a dead battery?

Can I do what they do in India and refurbish the battery myself?

are all the lead plates covered in kack or what? Read more

Remember, when the battery is on charge it liberates hydrogen and oxygen, a nice explosive mixture.

I once watched three mechanics tuning the engine of my car, intently watching the timing marks in the light of a strobe as one of them adjusteed the distributor. One of them had long dirty hair, which trailed across the battery terminals. I can only think that his hair was so dirty and wet that it drew a spark, igniting the gases and causing a bright flash and loud popping noise.

Hi all,

Any help here is a appreciated.

I recently purchased a 1996 BMW 316i. While driving the car i seem to lose power and the rev drops really low and i cant get any speed.

When i pull up the engine cuts out and battery light comes on. I then start the car and it has real trouble pulling away and then the same problem of being in gear and having trouble moving. I filled up the car with petrol and it seemed to stop the problem. but after 4 days the problem came back.

Any advice or anything at all is appreciated.

I have a 53reg Kangoo 1.5 dci fco7 engine 30k miles when pulling away from standstill on a steep incline it sends a vibration / judder through the vehicle whether in 1st gear or reverse. The problem seems worse when engine warm. vehicle drives well otherwise. Have taken it to renault dealer and no faults could be found on computer, and they were unable to replicate fault as there was not a steep enough incline in the area. Any thoughts would be appriciated. Read more

Age Concern offers a reasonable deal: £30 per annum if you already have their travel cover, for 90 days per year and up to 31 days per trip. The various covers are good except "Roadside assistance & recovery" with only £250 maximum paid. Surely this is not enough? Can anyone recommend a better deal with more realstic cover under this heading please please? I don't expect to go outside France/Switzerland/Italy. Read more

Hi there

Can anyone recommend where i can get my Golf GT TDI clutch replaced.. My not so friendly VW Garage wanted to charge £700 for teh pleasure and warned I might have to replace teh fly wheel.. dont think so .. the car has just done 70k miles and its the first clutch change...

Any comments appreciated!

Whilst you might not like the idea of replacing the flywheel, I think you'll find these are fitted with dual mass flywheels, which have a habit of separating. I believe the standard advice is to change the flywheel at the same time as the clutch, otherwise you end up doing it again some time later when the flywheel fails.....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

My daughter tells me she was not concentrating enough while driving and has been flashed running a red light in Perth WA.
She has a UK and a WA licence.
She has been working there for 7 months and IRC needed to get a WA licence after a 3 month grace period on her UK licence
1. Should she present her UK licence and would they let her off?
2. Should she present her WA licence?
3. She is happy to pay the fine but how much is the fine?
4. I said that if she is found guilty she should advise the insurance company
5. Can they endorse a UK licence?

Any advice on the situatiom would be most useful.
Thanks Read more

Her best bet is to go down the local cop shop and explain the whole thing being totally honest.
She will get fined of course and also get demerit points on the WA licence but when you think about it she got off lightly.

>>
Thanks expat for local info.
She has no problem paying the fine & points.
She was concerned about her UK licence plus of course was very very upset at her loss of concentration. She admits her mind was elsewhere. It has been a big wake up call.
