Does oil in the coolant always mean headgasket failure?
I've noticed light brown gunge floating in the coolant of my Rover 100, it's also in the filler cap and the top of the expansion tank.
I immediatley thought the headgasket had gone so I did a compression test, all 4 cylinders came in around 200psi (yes, I did press the reset button!)
The minimum compression pressure according to my Haynes manual is 160psi and the car is still driving nicely.
Could the headgasket have gone and if not does anyone know what else could be causing this? Read more
Had a few probs starting my car this morning, hoping someone here can shed some light on it.
Normally I just turn the key, don?t need any gas, and it starts first time, never experience any problems. On a coldish morning like today the revs usually go up to about 1500 and stay there for a minute or so and then drop down to around the 900 - 1000 mark where they stay whenever the car is idle. However, today was different ?..
Turned the key and the car started but was so rough it died only a few moments later. Tried 3 more times but it refused to kick into life, sounded like the starter was about to spin but it didn?t, made a horrible whining and died. (I know very little about cars but I use this description because I once drove an old Mini which had starter problems and it sounded just like this).
On the fourth attempt I gave it a bit of gas and the car started but as soon as I released the gas it began to splutter so I put my foot back again and kept the revs at around 1500. Sat there for no more than 20 - 30 seconds and then attempted to leave my driveway. Thought the car would die again as soon as I stopped, but it didn?t. By the time I got around the corner it sounded great. In fact I got all the way to work and experienced no more problems.
So, what should I check first, battery, starter, auto choke or something else? Hate taking car to a garage when I haven?t a clue what the fault is!!
Thanks

Sounds about right, probably realised it was Monday morning so ECU had a bit of a lie in. I had been using the car all week to/from work, but parked it up on Friday night and didnt use it again until Monday - although thats not unusual.
Hope to get it serviced once I have been paid at the end of the month so just keep my eye on it until then.

bought a car 10th September with private plate.
previous seller has not informed dvla that he has sold the car.
sent v62 into dvla which they received 21/09
they have on 29/9 put the plate on retention for the previous owner.
dvla have advised I cannot drive the car as the tax disc is cancelled and I cant get new plates as I dont have V5.
Has this happened to anyone?
Can anyone help?
DVLA admit they shouldnt have issued new tax disc and amended mot to owner after receiving V62 but say that I cant drive the car until they have investigated.

Sounds like DVLA have been totally incompetent. If the car was sold to you with the cherished plate, then it is yours. If they have transferred it, then they should automatically give you a new reg number and sort out the tax disc and MoT for you. Have you contacted your local licencing office (whaich these days, may not be that local to you anyway) ? - or try your MP ???
Does anybody out there know if i can replace a peugeot xud9 head to a turbo setup? Got a van with a knackered head and wanted to know if i could replace the exhaust etc, bang the head, turbo, manifold, intercooler on to give her a little help uphill!!!! Cheers. Ben. Read more
cheers richard, thats what i needed to know really, if the bits were the same, or not as is the case. I will be finding myself a complete car as a donor, can uprate the servo etc at the same time. Hopefully get one with a bosch fuel system so i can start running on veg oil as well.
Latest Saab add for the 9-3 SportWagon quotes the carrying capacity as (IIRC) 1273 cubic litres, surely a litre is a measure of volume anyway so a cubic litre is just guff!
Otherwise looks nice but for the Chav rear light lenses. Read more

Imagine how easy it will be to lose it! Cheaper to buy a new one than have to go looking in a parallel universe. I wonder what you see when you open the tailgate..?
My 99 406,has a problem with the radio reception,whereas,one minute it's fine,the next it loses signal,and hisses.
We have a local radio station near us,and even outside the building,it won't pick up the signal!!!!
The aerial base and aerial were recently replaced with brand new items from Peugeot, but still it persists.

Thanks for your input guys.I'll look into your suggestions over the coming days.
I never thought to give Clarion a ring, but will do so tomorrow when I'm at work.
I'll post back when I've got it sorted, hopefully,in the next few days.

My '99 endura diesel died this morning. It's half full of fuel. It started perfectly OK but expired after a few hundred yards. I've checked the cambelt, and the camshaft's going round. It had a new cambelt kit fitted by a local indy 3 months ago. The instruments go to full scale deflection for a few seconds when I turn the ignition on, and again when I operate the starter.
I found some dodgy looking earth connections under the air filter, and cleaned them. That is removed, abraded and vaselined. I'm sure I've read something similar but can't find it when I search. The last time I tried to start it an O/D warning light flashed briefly - it's manual! Any ideas? Read more

Hi all!
Am experiencing real problems with my 1995(M)Nissan Micra!
The engine is increasingly cutting out whilst car is being driven, both at low speed and at cruising speed (60 - 70mph).
We get no advance warning of this - speed drops, car loses power, engine cuts out and warning lights (as per initial start up) come on.
Furthermore, it is now failing to restart on several occasions!
Rescue patrols have come out and suggested various potential problems such as distributor, 'points and condensor', mass air flow sensor, fuel pump (though patrol looked at this at all seems to be in order there).
Anybody out there got any words of comfort before I hear back from Nissan workshop tomorrow??!!
Many thanks!

it was covered a few weeks ago maggie and i think the consensus was the coolent temperature switch which was causing overfueling,im sure you can flash the codes on 93 micras with a safety pin have you done that?post the code and i will look it up for you or you could google it..ps think andy pandy was put back in his box as he aint been seen for 6 months ;-)
The bosch KCA 21s-91 diesel injector on my 1998 omega is leaking diesel at the plastic sensor connection on the injector itself! Are these repairable ? Does anyone know what the purpose of this sensor is?
Thanks in advance Read more

ok Dave cheers.
Service is a must but just wondered if anyone knew if it was a regular fault..

>>A common fault on the K series is that the pathetic little bits of silicone that form the seals around oil and waterways come adrift and let the fluids mingle. You have impending HGF and it will be a catastrophic failure WHEN it does go, not IF. Schedule it in as soon as you can.
Perfectly correct, but would advise head is pressure checked before its reinstalled.they have been known to fail without overheating.cannot be too carefull on this unit, also make sure oil is changed as per man,not as you please, plus coolant, this is essential on this car.waterways are so small
