my heater fan is only working on 1 and 4 speed setting on the switch,is this a faulty fan motor or a switch and if motor is it a dash out job, 2002 crdi model Read more

I would think the most likely problem is a fault with the fan speed resistor. It is easily accessible from passenger footwell area ,just below glove box.It has a 4 pin connector attached to it.

Hi, any help with this greatly appreciated. I am not a car expert I should say in advance.

I bought a Golf Gti 1998 from a friend some time ago. The insurance is up for renewal. Whenever I put in the registration number in insurance quote sites, it appears as the 150bhp gti Turbo model. However, the car just has a 1.8 badge on the back (though i understand they didnt always put gti on the back of the car) and it doesnt feel like a turbo. I think it may be registered incorrectly. How can I go about checking this ? Is there anything on the engine that will reveal what horsepower it is capabale of ?

Thanks

Mike

I have just received a safety recall for my Ignis Sport re the inner drive shaft circlip, I'm having the car seen to by a Suzuki dealer in 5 days. The letter says that 'the left hand drive shaft may disconnect from the transmission due to insufficient holding force of the inner drive shaft joint circlip'. Now, my question is: just how serious a problem is this really ? I have to drive it for a good 250 miles before the circlip and hub nut are replaced, what precautions should I take ? It's got me really worried, are they recalling this model following a spate of accidents or just as a matter of caution ? Read more

Hi Guys/Gals,

I've currently got a Renault Clio R-reg (old shape) I've had it from new, and had pretty much every part on it changed at some point, due to the fact its been involved in a couple of crashes, timing belt snapped etc.

The only major thing thats never been done is the clutch! my car has done almost 75,000 miles and the clutch is now begining feel hard, sometimes I have to press it right in a couple of times to change gear, so im thinking of getting it changed. What type of prices should I be looking at? anybody recommend anywhere to go? (I live in North Manchester). Is it a big job to do? If its a lot of money I'll wait because im thinking of changing my car in the next 6/8 months or so. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I got this done much cheaper by sourcing the clutch myself and taking it to a garage to be fitted. Dealer wanted 300 quid to do the job. I got a clutch for 35 quid from a parts supplier and found a nice garage who fitted it for 70. Job done at a third of the cost.

Could someone please help me.
Is it possible for the clutch release bearing arm to 'knock' against the hydraulic slave cylinder rod causing a repitative noise when slowing down in gear and pulling away in low gears. If yes, what is this telling me and is it OK to carry on driving or should I get the clutch and release bearing changed?
The car changes gear perfectly, does not judder and pulls fine.
Can anyone advise me if the slave rod attaches to the release arm or just presses against it. The system has been bled when the brakes were done.
Many thanks.

I was thinking...is it possible to get an idea of how a car has been treated from the state of the belt and components? (Obviously there are other ways of telling but these all involve actual dismantling)

I imagine a belt that has been thrashed from cold will be more worn and perished as it won't have warmed up with the engine. Just a thought. My car was leased originally and I'd be curious to know how it was treated in it's infancy... Read more

Absolutely. Common A series problem, especially with the original rubber ring 'tensioners' on the cam pulley - yes I'm going back few years here. Chains rarely failed completely though. The later tensioners that were used seemed to improve things, but many owners switched to the duplex chains used first on the Cooper S engines. At that stage it was presumably finally recognised that the simplex chains couldn't cope.

We've got a Primera with electric windows and the drivers window switch is very temperamental in that it pleases itself whether it works or not so obviously this is pretty annoying! any ideas?

does it sound like it needs a new switch or motor?

also it's (the window) continuously "squeaking" when we're driving

It's like a rubbery sounding squeak if you know what I mean - we had the garage look at it when it was in for a service, but the switch worked fine for them and after they had the door panel off, the squeak has been ten times worse!

Before I visited the auto electrician the local Nissan dealer fitted a new switch .... it did not solve the problem so they put the old one back on and did not charge me for this.

I like big, anonymous, cheap, powerful cars. In other words, old Q cars:

My 960 blew up, or at least the auto box did... complete with lots of smoke and cursing. A jolly good time was had by all. Fortunately I got all my money back!

I like auctions as they have very good choice. The links are great, it is just they don't have that choice and those in the know always go to auctions.

And I love hard work. I am sad aren't I.

Remember me? I was going to buy a 1980's 911, then an S2000, but couldn't afford either?!
Change of plan- I'm now going to buy an MGB roadster, late 1960s, early 70's (chrome & wires/ minilites etc. I'm not new to this- had 2 midgets in the past, but would like to tap into the fountain of Back Room knowledge. Good examples seem to be available at about £5k. Any advice/ pitfalls, apart from joining the MGOC, getting the car checked & HPI'd?

Cheers in advance,

Alex.
