Does anybody out there know if i can replace a peugeot xud9 head to a turbo setup? Got a van with a knackered head and wanted to know if i could replace the exhaust etc, bang the head, turbo, manifold, intercooler on to give her a little help uphill!!!! Cheers. Ben.

It can be done but would be easier and cheaper to source a decent 1.9TD and just drop that straight in.

what would you suggest needs doing though? You see the engine is in an old vw bus so everything is modified anyway, just thought if i could get the top end off a td it would be ok as i think the turbos are mechanical and not controlled by the ecu? I may be totally wrong on most of this but I would ideally not want to remove the bottom end as the gearbox's are temperamental pink fluffy dice on them.

Yep everything on them is mechanical so as long as you get all the relevant bits you should be ok.

So if i smack the entire top end on everything should be sweet? I am right in saying the bottom end is nigh on exactly the same on them? It is not an effort to make the van any quicker just to stop me holding traffic up between exeter and newquay on them big old hills!!!!

You would also need to upgrade the injection pump, injectors and pump bracket, and injector piping.

sounds like i may just be better off with an entire unit and getting a spare vw box just in case!!! Thanks for your help folks.

Whilst outwardly simiar, the XUD normally aspirated engines and turbo engines are actually quite different. The main differences are uprated pistons and con rods, oil jets to cool the undersides of the pistons, turbo oil feed and and return pipes on the back of the block, different injection pump (and probably injectors). They are also fitted with bigger clutches. In short, you cannot easily fit a turbo head to N/A block - even if you overcome the oil supply problems, you will most likely melt something the first time out.

If you want turbo, you're going to have to change the entire engine I'm afraid.

cheers richard, thats what i needed to know really, if the bits were the same, or not as is the case. I will be finding myself a complete car as a donor, can uprate the servo etc at the same time. Hopefully get one with a bosch fuel system so i can start running on veg oil as well.
