I've just discovered that the clutch on my 1994 306 1.9TD seems to be slipping every time I accellerate uphill, particularly in 3rd gear or higher, which tells me that the clutch is on its way out. I'm aware that the cost for a new clutch is around £250 supply and fit and I'm wondering if it's worth bothering with because:-
a) The car has 172,000 miles on it (had 2nd hand engine fitted 20,000 miles ago- that has around 130k on it and is 100%.
b) The steering rack is leaking and the fluid needs topping up every 500 miles.
c) The radiator looks as if it would need replacing within a year as it seems to be corroding near the bottom but isn't losing coolant yet.
d) It will need 2 new tyres for its next MOT (April 06)
Otherwise the car is fine, bodywork is immaculate, interior is in good condition and everything else seems to work. Common sense tells me that I should consider selling it as it is as the value of repairs is likely to exceed the value of the car. What sort of price am I likely to get for it at present, with 6 months tax and MOT?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
Martin

I saw a 55 reg vehicle bowling along with a flyer flapping under the windscreen wiper.
I got a glimpse of the flyer and it was for MOTs.
That made me smile.

Chilling out on the journey home (I stick to 60 for the majority as I don't like heading onto the A3 at 70 on a cold engine) and watching people go flying down the fast lane at 90+, then seeing them after about 10 - 15 minutes sitting in the same patch of slow traffic as me...
Perhaps this is an urban myth, but I have heard that if you get a third party (say a garage) to come out and remove a wheel clamp from your car WITHOUT damaging it then there is nothing the clamping firm can do with regards collecting a fine..... Read more
Wasn't there a case of a Citroen owner (BX perhaps), whose car was clamped? Was able to remove the clamp without damaging it and got away with it?
I have just had a look at the weeks best deals page. Mabye it is just me but has the page changed? I seem to remember it being a selection of best deals, not hundreds and hundreds of cars offered on various web sites. Read more
Thats good to know, Thank you.
Hi Folks

What should i be paying for say a Omega Estate or that size?

Having had a little play on contracthireandleasing.com the best I can find is £329 + VAT (3 + 35) on a BMW 520d Touring. An Audi A6 or Volvo V70 would be about £369 + VAT. Contracthireadnleasing.com is a consolidation website and you have to have a fair idea of what you're after before you can find the best deals.
Alternatively if prestige doesn't matter to you, a Vectra estate 1.9 Breeze 120 would be £200 + VAT on a 3+23 basis.
Have a little play, see what you like.
I bought a new BMW compact in 2002 and the warranty expires in a few weeks. This has been the first new car i have bought and has been problematic to say the least. I had a look under the bonnet yesterday and noticed the dipstick was corroded, and some brackets corroded (i suspect due to a possible leak in the power steering reservoir). Without boring you with too much detail, I do not trust BMW to tell me the truth about any work that may be required.
I want to take the vehicle to a non franchised BMW specialist who will advise me of any issues that need addressing prior to the warranty expiring- can anyone reccomend one. Ideally in th North West of the Country or West London
Thanks

Have a look at the picture on the link above. Have you ever seen anything so dangerous?
Why oh why does a policeman dress in all black motorcycle gear, when he should be wearing bright reflective clothing like the pillion passenger on the second bike?
I hope she pointed his folly out to him.

Of course Tom, you could always mail the moderators the link so that they can ....ah...um.... judge it's suitability :-)
It's costing me 280 a year to insure an old banger worth 200 quid, third party fire and theft.
I phoned up to ask them how much extra it would be if I changed cars to a R reg Audi S8 4.2, which is listed as Group 20.
An extra 270 quid. I asked the dude to check his price three times, as I thought there must be something wrong.
I don't get how they work out insurance prices. How come the quote for the old banger is so much relative to the S8?

It is an assumed fact that all car speedos always err on the side of caution.
Why can car makers not make them more accurate?
Also is this a contributing factor to speeding as we all believe that we aren't going as fast as our speedo says? Read more
"Perhaps a sensor is all that steering wheels of the future will be connected to, maybe with the addition of some kind of force-feedback motor to fool the dummy behind the wheel that he is connected to the car! The pointing of *all* of the car's wheels will be firmly under the control of a vehicle dynamics ECU."
Ah that will be the new car built in Tolouse by Airbus Industries then,

Thanks again Solara, I think the heater matrix is about the only thing in this car I haven't replaced yet and I hope I don't have to!
