You must have this kind of question all the time !!
I am starting a new job which requires a 110 mile round trip every day. I need a car that is new-ish, has got 3 belts in the back and will get me 50 mpg. I doff my cap to the assembled knowledge and request your suggestions !!

A Focus isn't a supermini but I'm told it's a very capable, great to drive, and fantastic looking car. Or so I'm told.

Don't get any Ford diesel other than a TDCi. Avoid a TDdi (the older Focuses had these).

Not sure what kind of Focus TDCi you'd get for 5 k though.

i was on the m40 s/b on friday morning just past banbury. sorry to any one reading this who was in the 9 mile tailback. anyway it was a two car rtc and the other party admited to the police that i was to blame. i sufferd minor whiplash injury and i went to a&e after a few hrs as my neck was stiff and sore. i was in a company car and my work mates are saying that i should claim for my injury but this is the first accident i have had and im not sure if i can claim for whiplash as this is all new to me. are my work mates right or are they winding me up. can anyone throw some light on this matter. Report the accident to the insurance company and there will be a box asking for any injuries - tick the box and fill in the symptoms.

For the pain in the neck my GP said Ibuprofen (takes down the swelling) as well as pain killer + you can have up to 8 paracetamol / day as well. In my case the pain went away in 3/4 days.

The doctor said 1 day after the accident - keep it till it gets better. My neck stiffened and I needed Physiotherapy to get it moving - 3 visits. Matters got better with each visit - the only remaining complaint was soreness every few weeks that would last for a few days - couple of paracetamols usually fixed it.

4 years later there seems to be little affect although I got bother for 2+ years.

If you have Legal assistance cover (house or car) they will pay for a lawyer to claim for any loss / compensation - it took 2 years and a threat of court action before the 3rd party / insurance co agreed they were at fault (stationary & rear ended at red traffic lights it could not have been me!!) I got my excess £100, £50 or so expenses, my £105 back for 3 x physio appointments (NHS was 3 mths wait) and some compensation for my neck.

If the 3rd party had admitted liability (paid up for the damage, expenses, the physio etc right away) I would not have asked for pain etc. The threat of court action made them settle - 24 hours b4 the court appearance - the blame worthy driver was driving a garage loan car with a £1000 excess - hence their reluctnace to admit liability.

Bit of an odd one, this. I was approaching the QEII bridge over the Thames at Thurrock last night when I noticed that at the Crossing Patrol post on the left hand side of the road was one of their Land Rover Defenders, in the middle of the concrete access road, laying on its drivers side.

Now I have read about turning cars on their side when undertaking major floorpan welding work, for example, but I wouldn't have thought the Dartford Crossing was so strapped for cash that the staff have to do it to their company vehicles in quiet moments during the working day.

It wasn't windy or stormy or anything, and I haven't noticed any earthquakes in the Essex area lately. It was definitely there, no doubt about it, the traffic was at a crawl so the topsy-turvy Landy was in plain view for a good 40 seconds as I passed. Has anyone got any idea why or how it came to be there?

Anyone seen any other unusual sights on the roads?

I had and losta video containing a piece of footage of the above rallying legend driving a Quattro. The in car camera was pointed at his feet which were 'dancing' on the pedals and showing his mastery of 'left foot braking'.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to the exact title of the video or a recent title which contains the same clip?

I bought my Rover 90 for £50 in 1973 as a companion for the 3 litre I was just reminiscing about in the first love thread. It had one owner before me, he was selling it cheaply because the clutch was slipping again less than 1,000 miles after a garage had replaced it at some exorbitant cost.

Some of you may know that the clutch on these models can be changed whilst sitting in comfort on the front armchair so job was soon done. Wont mention garages name but they were a Rover main dealer, hmmm.

Anyway I used and abused Auntie for a few years until I got a job with a company van; in those halcyon pre HSE days I was able to construct a wooden bench seat in the back and sit the kids on that, so poor old Auntie got put in the shed.

About twenty years ago during a visit to a steam fair I was admiring the line up of classic cars, in the middle of which was an immaculate P4, it was like one of those Road to Damascus experiences; hang on havent I got one of those somewhere?

To say I dragged it out and restored it would not be strictly accurate. The local garage welded sills and B-posts to MOT standard, chassis is of Land Rover quality so was OK, and a little filler and lots of brush painting made Auntie fairly presentable again. Just after I had finished the great hurricane of 1987 loosened the shed roof which collapsed on her. The very nice man who came round sent me a cheque for, I think, about £300 to get her repaired. I hope hes not a member of the backroom because I pushed the dent out and bought an aerosol, the remaining marks are on the roof so only tall people can notice.

Auntie has an easy life now, like myself, (but still running on the 1973 clutch) at about 18mpg she is lucky to have a life at all!
She has a non-standard hole under the back seat where daughters car seat was attached, some 25 years later I used the same hole to secure granddaughters seat.

With a total annual running cost of about £200 plus petrol Auntie is going to hang on in there until either great granddaughter materialises or someone takes my licence away.

Surely someone can beat 32 years... Read more
