No, not trying to restart the debate on that old chestnut again.
I just saw on BBC.co.uk ( news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/coventry_warwickshire/...m ) that they are actually doing an overtaking ban starting next Monday on the M42 NB J10-11.
So backroomers who travel those parts, let's hear your experiences!

They did a similar thing (but for caravans) on the M5 last year or the year before around bristol area, AFAIK they have stopped it as it was shown not to work!!! It does work in Europe on many roads, not sure about on this stretch though, will have to wait and see but I suspect that smaller vehicles that lack power will cause as many problems - at the end of the day it is mostly down to volume of traffic rather then the speed of the vehicles that cause traffic jams, the variable speed limits on the M25 have proved that.

I think there is as much of a problem with dozy old trilby wearing duffers who travel at 45 mph see a lorry in the next county and pull out to overtake from 35 miles away, thereby causing the 25 mile jam.
|
Yes, read this yesterday. They must be having a laugh!
So when an 8-axle crane on the inside lane does 40 up that incline, all of the lorries are expected to queue end-on. Now that will cause a jam.
|
From a purely selfish point of view I'm unsure what's better for the car driver. A 3 lane motorway or a 2 lane motorway with no lorries on it. There's probably not much in it.
I can see a lot of lorry drivers (if not all) ignoring this rule when the situation that Red Baron illustrates actually happens. This does seem to be a bit reactionary with no-one really considering the consequences.

Life is complex; it has real and imaginary parts.

This works well on the continent, as the lorries simply obey the signs. Yes, you end up with a long chain of lorries, but 1 or two lanes are then left clear for cars. The lorries also know that they will "get there", even though it may be slower than planned.
But then lane discipline is adhered to much more over there in general terms.

I daresay that the duffer knows that if he gets much closer no one will let him pull out to overtake.

The other thing that springs to my mind is that you are allowed to cross a solid white line if overtaking a very slow moving vehicle i.e.less then 10mph, Now is that same rule applied here, if I were to be behind a crane or other very slow moving vehicle doing less then 10mph would I be allowed to overtake? If not then it is far more dangerous then if we were allowed to overtake, surly using the minimum speed signs for the outside lane would be better. Not allowed in it unless you are doing over 50mph, now that would be a far better idea.

Truckersunite has made the real point - smaller vehicles that lack power will cause as many problems.
So why stop with trucks? Bye bye Nissan Micras, old Rovers, all non-Type R Honda Civics.... until all that's left is six cylinder BMWs and Porsches. I do hate being stuck behind a 316!
Or we could just accept that other people have different needs, and that we just have to take account of them. Swings & roundabouts....
