Dear all,
For some reason, we're travelling down to Somerset this friday evening, from Bromley. I know, I know.
Anyway, having decided to drive, as opposed to the 4 1/2 hour train journey (with multiple changes, at the cost of a couple of low-profile tyres), I'd be grateful for some route advice. I will travel cross-country to the A3 (via Banstead), and was thinking of avoiding the M4/ M5, and taking the A303, cutting back up towards bridgewater lower down. Make any sense?
TIA,
Alex.

I have noticed a small rust spot on the door frame of my 1999 polo. Does anyone have any advice of what i should do before the rust really takes hold?
Thanks for any tips

Sounds like it might be on a part which is out of sight. If so no need to worry about getting a perfect finish.
Dremel grind the rust to bare metal, make sure you eat all the rust and eat the surrounding paint until you are sure there is no more rust. Then use a piece of fine sand paper to gently finish off the metal and the edge of the paint around the patch.
Now if you like you can get some rust eater acid gel from an auto shop, paste a bit on and leave for 10 mins (this will eat away any remaining rust particles. wash off with water and dry. leave for 10 mins to dry good.
Now If I were you I would use a grey primer with zinc oxide mixed in it, I believe hammerite do a tin of this (but it could be someone else). paint on one coat of that stuff, leave for a few hours to dry and finish off with a spray can of the right colour spray into the lid and paint it on or make a hole in a corn flake box like a stencil and spray gently onto affected area.
Hi all,
I have a 'normal' car at the mo, will be moving to classic in a month or so, and thus classic insurance. Anyone know if I can use my no claims on a classic, limited mileage policy, and if not, what happens in a few years' time when I am forced to buy a proper car again (if blessed with patter of tiny feet)?
TIA,
Alex.

p.s. the point of the exampels being - don't get knotted up on the NCD issue, just look for the company who will charge you the least money for the service and cover you require.
it pays me a decent wage.
Did a forum search for information on BCA auctionview and was disappointed that I couldn't access sale prices of cars, but saw that account holders could. Are there any account holders here that would be willing to look up the sold prices/average info for a particular model?. I'll buy you a Paypal pint for your troubles.

Thanks again, Jonathan. Send me your paypal address.

Does anyone know an easy way to tell if above car has ABS?. I plan to change the front pads and wanted to buy the pads beforehand, but the car is not present and the owner wouldn't be able to remove wheels to look for associated ABS gubbins. Its a T reg 1.4i "west coast" petrol if that helps
No owners manual came with car. Read more
Thanks for all the tips (was really tempted by the wet grass one). I took a look on autotrader for that model and the majority of them listed ABS so I took a chance and got ABS specific pads. They fit fine, thought I did snap the original lug tool and bent a Peugeot one into a U-shape trying to get the wheel bolts off. What was the last person to do them up thinking!!!.
Are there any mobile air con servicing companies ?
or has anybody any recommendations for an air-con specialist in Bolton/Bury/Wigan ?

I'm looking to buy a cheap diesel around £1200 or so as have limited income. I do a lot of camping in the summer and want something that will be long enough to sleep in. A berlingo van might be ideal, but insurance as a private user is about £350. I currently pay £160 comp on my pug 205 (group 8), so I guess the insurance on a Berlingo saloon (group 5) must be around the same. If the seats can be removed on the berlingo, are you left with a flat load floor? How does the kangoo compare? Have also considered daihatsu hijet, but driving position cramped. Any other options I haven't considered - ideas very welcome? Read more
There is no saloon, the normal Multispace is a van with windows just like the other Berlingo's.
The chances of getting anything other than a tired old wreck for under £1500 are limited.
Hi. I had the front calipers and pads changed 3k ago, and previously 8k ago the front shocks done. Recently the steering has begun pulling to the right under moderate braking. Had brakes checked on rolling road and are ok with 4% difference. Any clues as to where problem may lie? Thanks very much. Read more
Front lower arm bushes... 'wishbone' bushes - are a favourite on these and ZXs... and they give accelleration/over-run or braking steering. Could well be that - and if it is, new bottom arms are cheaper than replacing the bushes because they're absolute swine to get out...! Not dear, either way.
Just had my Xsara MOT'd and an advisory was that the front brake pads were wearing thin. I trust the garage and it makes sense, as they haven't been changed for at least two years.
The garage recommended I have them done within the next 2000 miles - I suggested waiting until they start screeching but mechanic said that means they're knackering the disc.
1) Is this true?
2) How easy are the pads on the Xsara to change? I have a Haynes manual, jack, axle stands, and am quite handy with a set of tools.

Renault Family answered the question perfectly - why did someone feel
the need to take it further with a personal attack?
How can offering someone sound advice be considered a personal attack?
You asked for an opinion on whether you should wait until they started screeching.
By the time they've started screeching it'll be too late - hence risking your own life and others around you because your brakes won't be able to stop you.
That aside, changing the pads now will mean that you won't have the added expense of also having to change scored brake discs as well.

Which route did you take and how was the traffic?
