bromley to bridgewater - apm
Dear all,

For some reason, we're travelling down to Somerset this friday evening, from Bromley. I know, I know.

Anyway, having decided to drive, as opposed to the 4 1/2 hour train journey (with multiple changes, at the cost of a couple of low-profile tyres), I'd be grateful for some route advice. I will travel cross-country to the A3 (via Banstead), and was thinking of avoiding the M4/ M5, and taking the A303, cutting back up towards bridgewater lower down. Make any sense?

TIA,

Alex.

Where would you join the A3?, if near Guildford then go A31, A287, M3, A303, A372, the latter is a bit windy so from the A303 go A36, A362, A361, A39 for an alternative route.

From Bromley one would certainly join the A3 in the New Malden area. There may be some tailback at the Guildford bypass but it is the weekend rush. Keep in the outside lane at Guildford as there is a big feed in from the town. I always use that part of the A31 and not found any problems. Cannot comment on the rest of the route.

No chance of putting it back by one week?

I should have thought of that, planning to go to Glastonbury on the 12th, on the other hand it could be what he is travelling for.

I'd use the M3, not the A3. The A303 is pretty good though.

Assuming this Bromley in Kent I regularly do Somerset to West Wickham in Kent. I'm not quite as far over as Bridgwater but it will give you food for thought. I would do M25, M3, A303 until you are just south of Shepton Mallet in Somerset - sorry I don't have a map with me now to give you a junction number. Head north to join A39 through Wells, Glastonbury, Street (all those great carnival towns!) and on to Bridgwater. A good 3.5 hour, possibly 4 hour drive I would have thought.

The A303 has had closures over the last few weeks at various points west of Andover (Illminster being one, can't remember the others), Might be something to bear in mind!!!!

M3 if you can, A303, leave at Podimore roundabout at Ilchester (not Ilminster) on the A372 signposted Langport and onto Bridgwater. The journey will be slow, and the A372 is by no means a quick road.

Much more sense than M4/M5 though. The intersection at Bristol is worth avoiding on its own.

If the M25 looks bad, turn off on to the A3 - then before Farnham take A331 to the M3 rather than A287. It's easy to get lost round Upper Hale (east of Farnham).

Having joined the A3 there is absolutely no way I would go near the M25 or the London end of the M3. Why risk getting involved when there is a a good alternative. You are then left with a maximum of 12 miles of M3 before the A303

Hi All,

The Somerset end of the journey seems to be cool- several possibilities to go cross country from the A303, will probably take the A372 as it's direct.
But at the other end, I will get to the A3 at Tolworth, but am I better off crossing to the M3 before or after the M25? The easiest option is just to go M25 to the M3, but it could be jammed solid, so I'd like a contingency... I could go A309 and join the M3 at Sunbury (the source...), or travel further and cut up through Chertsey, or cross the M25 and cut through on the A322. Or am I best keeping options & judging on the day?

Thanks for all your input!

Alex.

Join the M3 either before or after the M25, but I wouldn't recommend AT the M25; if anything is going to be blocked, that will be.

I would hope you get to the A3 via Croydon, Mitcham Green, Morden, New Malden. This may well be slow on a Fri evening.
As Cheddar & I said avoid M25 and a good part of the M3
From where you join the A3 it is dual carriage way two or three lanes all the way and onto and through the A31 Hogs back.
I live near Tolworth and know all the routes well.
Why risk the urban motorways when there is a good A road alternative?

I would suggest if you go for the M3 bypass Sunbury cross roundabout.
You will cross over Hampton Court bridge and turn left towards the M3. You will enter a 20mph area then take the turning right towards Heathrow. At the first lights turn left.
You will soon see a large Sainsburys on the left and a flyover ahead. Slip left onto the A316. Beware Gatso. Thus you will flyover Sunbury onto the M3 thus avoiding any tailback towards that M3 access.
