I'm looking to buy a cheap diesel around £1200 or so as have limited income. I do a lot of camping in the summer and want something that will be long enough to sleep in. A berlingo van might be ideal, but insurance as a private user is about £350. I currently pay £160 comp on my pug 205 (group 8), so I guess the insurance on a Berlingo saloon (group 5) must be around the same. If the seats can be removed on the berlingo, are you left with a flat load floor? How does the kangoo compare? Have also considered daihatsu hijet, but driving position cramped. Any other options I haven't considered - ideas very welcome?

Forgive my ignorance but what the hell is a Berlingo saloon?

Much prettier than a Focus saloon ... ;-)

Realistically I don't think with a budget of £1200 you will be able to afford either. Especially not the diesel. Have you actually seen any at anything close to these prices?

I did ask for that I suppose.

All I have seen on Ebay that is circa £1,000 is a crashed Kangoo or a year 2000 Berlingo with 3 days to go on the auction that is already bidding at £1,000 so likely to fetch a lot more.
Better to spend a bit on the 205 and use the money left over for a nice warm B&B!

ZX Estate should be pretty close: should have a reasonably flat floor (although I've never inspected it for sleeping quality!) and pretty long. 1.9D should be easily available for under £1200, and 60mpg possible if treated a bit gently.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I assume he is comparing the vans to the car versions, and by saloon he means the car derivative?

Presumably the Multispace, the one with rear windows and seats.

Hi, thanks for replies. Yes, by saloon I meant the normal multispace I think it's called. £1200 may be optimistic, but no harm in aiming low - Maybe nearer £1500 would be more like it. See current item number 4585145523 on ebay, also have regular auctions nearby. I used to run 2cv's which with which the whole back seat would lift out in 5 secs, is there an equivalent? Berlingo seems nearest.

There is no saloon, the normal Multispace is a van with windows just like the other Berlingo's.
The chances of getting anything other than a tired old wreck for under £1500 are limited.
