My automatic tdi Passat performs very poorly when overtaking or going up long, steep hills, it's OK on the flat and mild inclines, but gutless when the going gets really tough! It's as though the turbo isn't working, how does one know if it's working? There is definitely no "kick in the pants" when flooring the pedal, kickdown occurs because the revs show it, but nothing else happens!

The car is booked into a local, non-franchised garage next month to be investigated. If someone can list some possible areas to check, I would be most grateful. The turbo charger and associated pipes appear to be intact, could the cause be ECU related, or even the turbo itself?

All info gratefully received.

Thanks Andrew, I picked one up today, (before reading your message!), it was £75 + the dreaded vat. It comes complete with the piece of duct, I've invested in a set of "security" torx bits which allow me to just change the sensor - a two minute job hopefully, do you forsee any problems doing it that way? Also, are there likely to be any fault codes registered on the ECU? If there are, should I get them deleted by someone with the necessary equipment?

I've just been on a motoring organisations website reading up on what to do if you breakdown on the motorway. The advice given states that if you must (feel threatened etc..) sit inside your car on the hardshoulder you should sit in the passenger seat with the doors locked. It does not say to put your seatbelt on - is there any reason for this? Or have they omitted it as it's taken for granted?

This also got me thinking - my car has seat belt pre-tensioners and airbags, would these safety items work in the event of a car rear ending me whilst my car was stationary with the engine off?

Better idea:

Stand behind the barrier wearing fluorescent jacket & hard hat and carrying the shovel/pickaxe/crooklok, etc.

I have a high milage 406 1.9td that leaks oil from the pipe by the intercooler. I have also noticed a ford focus with low miles leaking oil from the same place, Read more

A lot of intercooled diesels(usually air/air coolers)show a stain at the connection on the output end;as long as it is not dripping out, there should be no problems-it comes from the oil mist out of the crankcase vent system.

Hello,

The battery terminal clamp on my 1999 Micra was badly corroded, so I took it to the main dealer at deleted - DD, to replace the part.

They said they could not replace the clamp on its own - they'd have to replace the whole unit (i.e. cables and everything etc), at a cost of £199 for the whole unit, with labour on top.

Took it to a local independent garage specialising in electrical systems (just across the road from the main dealer). They said they'd replace the cable and clamp for £27.50 for parts and labour.

Why the wide disparity in the prices? Since cash is tight I'm going for the cheaper deal, but am I missing out on something. Will I be storing problems for the futre?

Question 306 idle
thomp1983

hi, my 306 1.9TD 1996 seems to idle fast, unfortunately my tacho doesn't work so i can't tell you the exact speed but ive adjusted the idle speed screw to the lowest setting i c an without the car stalling and it still sounds wrong, ive also adjusted the anti stall speed adjustment screw but this makes no difference and ive also checked the fast idle lever is not sticking on so im out of ideas now, would an air leak contribute to this? any other ideas?

focus_tdci_alex

Hi all, I recently purchased a 53 plate one focus tdci (115ps) and Ive notcied that on long runs I'm getting around 40-45 mpg driving at around 65-70 (I'm no boy racer by any means). I've notcied that also should I need to put my foot to the floor when the turbo kicks in I can see lots of emissions from the back of the car. This doesnt happen when the car is stationary and revved (with my GF looking at the exhaust).

Anyone offer any help/advice

Thanks in advance

Alex

I've recently bought this car and as i still havent managed to pass my test yet :-( the car is off the road alot unless i have someone to come out with me.
The problem is that recently the battery went flat, i recharged the battery BUT eversince i refitted the battery i am unable to turn the alarm/immobiliser off the car, so whenever i A) get in the car the alarm goes off and B) if i try to turn the engine over the immobiliser kicks in and HEY PRESTO! no engine and the alarm goes off. I have replaced the battery in the handset, done all the things the manual says to do afetr a recharged battery has been fitted and i am now at the end of my tether, the car is sat there, i cant use it, and i cant turn the damn immobiliser/alarm off. Can anyone help???? Read more

Sorry for the cross-post, I did originally happen to come across this on VW's site but it seems to have vanished now. Anyway I think this is quite a cool achievement, it's called the Eco-Racer and manages to be very fast and sporty while still being very fuel efficient. I think electric cars would sell much better if they went more down this track than some of the others I've seen (I'm thinking particularly of the Smartcar here).

Check it out, it's pretty cool even if it is only a concept car.

I have temp traffic lights at roadworks near me. Whilst waiting on the red, whenever the opposite lights go to red I always seem to get flashed by the opposing traffic to come through.

I never do this, I just won't go through a red light cos I don't know if there is maybe a police car 3 behind me or whatever.

But today, the car behind me overtook me and went through on the red cos I insisted on waiting till the lights changed.

What do you do in these circumstances? I would strss that there are no side roads etc, road is perfectly clear and the roadworks themselves are maybe only 25 yards or so. Read more

Best to wait for green. We had a similar situation yesterday, someone went through on red as the cars coming the other way had stopped, but being on a junction it was a three way set up and he almost ended up being T boned by a bus.

I needed a new tyre for the Alfa and thought I would get prices on the internet.

Kwik Fit quoted a price, I phoned my local store who said they had the one I needed but quoted £20 more than the internet. I told them my search on the internet and they agreed that I could pay the lower price.

Whilst in there having it fitted, a woman came in asking for the same Pirelli P6000 and she got quoted the higher amount and paid it.

Isn't the internet a beautiful thing!!!

Might have been worth comparing Kwik-fit's prices with:
