Simon (Anne\'s Other Half)

I've just treated myself to a GTM K3. It's a fibreglass mid-engined 2-seater coupe which had the approval of SWMBO! It's only got a 1120cc K-series engine but I'm told I can put any K in it. I fancy a 1.6 (enough in something that weighs nothing) but am not sure which bits of the engines are compatible, eg. starter, ignition, ECU etc.
Anyone done any 'transplants' who could advise?
Or any fibreglass car owner advice would be appreciated too.

Thanks

I think this was a Rover-supplied kit - some hoses and a remote filter housing. One of the Rover discussion boards should be able to provide more info. With all that's gone on recently it may no longer be available though.....

It seems Jezza has made some enemies! Fancy that!

Got a noise just like a worn rear wheel bearing from the Puma. Having had a similar noise on another car turn out to be the tyres I wonder if anyone has experienced this as well on a Puma or Fiesta. The wheels are dead quiet when spun by hand with no discernible play. The rear tyres have some 5mm of tread left so I'm reluctant to junk them as a first step. Mind you they're made by Patriot, which I can't trace so they will be changed for Michelins from Costco before the end of the year. Read more

Talked to Costco and they are not doing discount on Michelin tyres in Autumn, though there are other discounts available. The next discount on tyres will be in Spring.

I have a whirring noise coming from back nearside. Got the wheel bearings checked - these are fine. When reaching 70mph there is slight vibration felt but not in the steering. Also at this speed the noise gets louder. Any ideas? Thanks Read more

Never seen that post before but I had *exactly* the same thing on a Peugeot 406 (leased company car). The Firestone tyres had worn every alternate block. It was only noticed because the dealers very zealous MOT tester failed it - he had to point out the problem to both me and the service manager before we could see it.
Anyway, replacing the tyre cured the 'bearing' noise that had got steadily worse over the preceeding few months.

Looking for some kind words of support here.....

You may remember from the Technical Section (or indeed not) that I've been having trouble with stalling & hesitancy on a W plate Vectra petrol 1.8. It's had a new air sensor (167) and a new throttle body (320) and the problem persits. As it is in for an MOT today (which needs a new front bush, circa 164), they have said that the ECU is probably the cause - a whopping 780 to replace!!!!

I am sure that it is not economically viable to keep throwing money at it like this, especially when it will have done 92k miles by this time next year (it's just done 70k).

So, what would you do in this situation? Get a 0% deal on a new car? Repare it? Try your luck at auction for a cheap car to tide me over for 12 months?

We do have 2 incomes, but Turkey II is coming along in December meaning Mrs Turkey won't be at work, and it is not a company car. As well as being the car I use for commuting, it's also the family car.

It never rains but it pours eh?

For the typical main dealer the most powerful diagnostic & repair tool they have is the customer's credit card. Given enough time it can fix pretty much any problem....

This might seem really pedantic ....

I bought a new car and picked it up yesterday. One reason for going to the dealer was its claim of excellent customer satisfaction (as measured by Ford).

Now, on picking up the car, I was basically pressurised into filling in "very satisfied" on the feedback when it comes (through the post), which I refused to do, because I wasn't ! Then they've essentially tried to bribe me with extras to do so, also claiming the salesman wouldn't get paid unless I did (yeah right).

Looks like the "excellent customer service" isn't perhaps as good as claimed then ...

Any other stories of scams ? This is my first new car purchase and I've been a little surprised by a couple of the antics. Read more

Agreed totally Lawman, many people didn't fill the forms in at all, and Ford only like to see completely satisifed, the dealerships could get massive bonuses from having a good CSP rating (basically percentages of completely satisfied)

Headlightwashers pump works fine-sprays ok.
Screen and rears-no water although pump sounds ok. Blew back to tank from screen pipe and bubbles come out of tank(which is full). Is front and rear from same pump? if so, how does system work? Any clues anyone as it seems that its bumper off to get to tank and pumps.? Read more

I had the same problem with my Vectra GSi Estate. The gunge was from screen washer fluid and is apparently quite a common problem especially if stronger dosages (I use 70:30 water:fluid in the winter) are used.

Come to think of it I indeed also had the same problem with my MG Metro and Sierra some years back.

Can recall reading an article about a cancelled export order resulting in cars being left standing for long periods!

My C Class was registered in March 2003 but a lot (is not all) the components have October 2001 stamped on them.

My dealer informs me that MB will commission a parts run that may be used on cars over a number of years so the difference in dates is not unusual.

Is this correct, or are they fibbing and, has my car been standing in a field hub deep in water for over a year? Read more

I recall that the "Mercs hanging around" problem arose from rhd cars for export to Malaysia and Indonesia being cancelled due to some fuel crisis at the time. I also thin that it related to the old E class and SLs

My mate has a Vauxhall Vectra 2.2DTI LS 5dr Automatic that he has been running privately as his company transport.

It is on an '03 plate (March 03) and has a full Vauxhall service history. It is in average condition (few stone chips, tiny dents, etc, but other than that very good with everything working on it) and it has 81,700 miles on the clock.

According to Auto Trader with this mileage it is worth approx £700 as a trade-in and according to the What Car? magazine it would be worth £1,200. Can these figures really be right for a 2 1/2 year old car?!

Looking on Ebay and a couple of other places privately, Vectra's similar to this sell arround the £5,000 mark. Would this be a reasonable starting point for a private sale or is this over the top still? Is the Automatic box a help or a hinderance (i.e does it sell at a premium or the opposite?)

Any advice appreciated! He hates the idea of selling privately as he doesn't feel mightily confident selling cars but the financial difference makes it look like madness to trade it in. Read more

Its not the trade in price or the price of the new vehicle its the bit in the middle thats important and the % rate if you have to buy on credit ,a lot of these big outlets have a good screen price but poor trade in and and extortionate credit rates along with main dealer in house rates.

Light comes on and then off as part of diagnostic check when starting engine. Once car moves off and reaches a speed of about 5mph, the light comes on, and stays on. A mate reckoned one of the abs speed sensors is dirty, and just needs a clean. Any ideas? How do I check this? Read more

Aprilia

An aftermarket CV joint would cost me either £35 or about £80 - depending on which model Primera you have. Make sure you get the one for ABS cars (42 little teeth on a ring). It is then 1-2 hours labour, depending on who does the job. Any independent should be able to do it. I would say overall not more than £200, probably considerablly less depending on your local labour rates.
Check it is actually a cracked ring before replacing though!
