holtyboy

I hope this is ok to post this kind of question here - sorry if it is not.

I just wanted to know if anybody had bought a used car from KCS Cars of Surrey in Addlestone? And if so would you recommend or not recommend them?

Thanks! Read more

And on that happy note I'm going to lock this thread now to avoid contravening site guidelines on "naming and shaming" - reproduced below in full as a reminder to all.

If anyone has experiences of this dealership which they wish to share with holtyboy, please email them to moderators@honestjohn.co.uk, who will happily pass them on.

HJ& RF managed to jump in while I was preparing this - apols...

Negative feedback can usually be split into two areas;

1) Accusation of dishonesty

You may not identify someone you are accusing of dishonesty or a dishonest act. And, by the way, the following would all identify Tesco and would be uacceptable;

The supermarket with advert x.
The supermarket with a name which rhymes with Fresco.
Tesc0 or T3sco.
etc.

An accusation of a dishonest act would be "I paid for two but they only did one", "This company is a rip-off" and other similar comments.

You may know that what you say is absolutely true; I do not know this. Neither am I prepared to put the amount of time, money and effort into the level of investigation which would be required for me to know that you were being truthful.

You may know that they have lost a court case over it - usually I do not know this.

Therefore, I am always working on the basis that I do not know that what you say is true, and will assume that it may not be.

If what you say is not true, then this represents a serious issue for the website. It may be that a case can be won, or indeed that it can be deflected to you rather than ourselves, however either will take time and money even when completely in the right, never mind if in the wrong, and so it is not a risk that we will take.

Even if what you say is true, it will still cost money, time and effort to prove/justify/explain that it is true, and I'm not willing to do that either.

If you wish to give a negative message about a vendor, I find that the following phrase works well enough; "I would not recommend supplier X and will happily supply more details by e-mail".

2) Opinion of Product/Service

You may say that you do not like something. You may even say that you think it is rubbish - my views on the Freelander would be an example. You may say that you find it awful or that you would never buy it. On the whole opinions that are clearly that, opinions, are usually acceptable.

That is not to say that I will not remove the more extreme opinions; again I will err on the side of safety.

Finally, to sum up, anything that I feel will cause the website difficulties or extra work, or even something which I think might do so, will get removed. Generally I follow the principles I've stated above, but if I have a doubt I always err on the side of caution.

Having had an acrylic number plate shattered (by a stone, presumably) I was wondering if:
a)Aluminium Reflective number plates are legal on a year old car?
b)Are they even available anymore? Read more

Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}

Looking at the website I assumed the reflective layer was laminated to an aluminium backing.
Not sure how the plastic letters are then fitted. I remember the old raised plastic numbers wilting after UV exposure.

Just a quick one. My wife has just bought a pug 307 on a 54 plate with about 12k on the clock. It is now back at the main peugot dealers where she bought it from (on finance). So far she has noticed

1 - tracking seems out
2 - rear door handle on drivers side is faulty - won't always open from outside
3 - strong smell of petrol
4 - revs seem to stick high

The car was previously owned by a rental company {generalised by DD} - hence the tracking! The car still has some of its manufacturers warranty left. They are saying that they are going to charge her to fix the tracking - we don't know about the other problems yet. Is this normal. She has had the car for less than 2 weeks.

Also, at what level could you reasonably say to the dealer that you are not happy with the car and cancel the finance agreement - if at all? The guy told her it was a 1.6 when she bought it. It turned out it was a 1.4. Personally I'd say that was gounds in itself. Read more

If you do write to Peugeot I suggest its to the Managing Director/Chairman not Customer Care or similar.
I had a problem with Ford last year who effectively renaged on an admittedly verbal statement by a member of the normally excellent Glasgow call centre.Having battled with a very arrogant member of their staff I was so incensed at the attitude that I checked the Ford web site, got the name of the chairman (Roger Puttnam) and rang Ford UK HQ. Rather cheekily I asked "Can I have Rogers fax No", it was given without hesitation and a 4 page letter was duly dispatched to him by fax.
The following day all was sorted quite satisfactorily!!
Good luck

hi now ive finally got the 306 dt to start again it idles very rough and pushes out lots of white smoke, also when idleing the fuel primer has no pressure in it at all it's just soft and no pressure will build in it by pumping, does this indicate an air leak if so where is the likely source? i didn't replace the o ring on the fuel filter housing so im suspecting this is the fualt? also i think there may have been water in the diesel i put in would this explain the smoking? could anything else be at fault?

ok time for a moment of shame, having checked the valve clearences i found i got the shims for the inlet and exhaust the wrong way round on cylinder 1 so that coupled with the replaced boost pipe should hopefully rectify problems

Does anyone out there understand their Ford warranty ?
I have a just 2 year old Focus Zetec, and when I asked them to check a minor idling problem during the 2 year service they said that the diagnostic was chargeable ??
Having read the warranty I have to say that I'm confused, as it seems to say that the first year is a 'base' warranty with unlimited mileage, with free of charge 2 year extension to 'Classic' cover. The wording is ambiguous, but it seems that running adjustments are not covered in the warranty, but subsequent replacements of defective parts are. So I would have to pay the labour costs to find out if any parts needed replacing.
I must admit this is a first for me as I always thought that aside from wear and tear issues, any other anomaly such as this is usually looked at without question in the first 3 years .
Comments/advice please. Read more

Complain to Ford in Glasgow. I did and have had plenty of supposed non-warranty bits and pieces replaced on my rubbish 2 year old Mondeo.

On a related issue, regarding what is and isn't included in a service needs making clearer. My sister has just had her 2 year old Fiesta "serviced" and was stung an extra £40 to get the brakes cleaned! The mind boggles, I thought a service was to put things like that right. It appears it is becoming a charge to just look at the car and then see how much money they can extract. And to add insult they pulled the replacement wiper sting as well.

Front discs are held in place by the serated star washers that sit over the hub bolts. The disc is not screwed to the hub.

As for changing them, bit hit and miss. Many reports on this site of discs having to be destroyed to get them off. Mine came of with a tap from a nylon hammer. Copper slip the hub before you refit the new discs it stops em corroding to the hub, beware thou' do not put on to much grease as it'll migrate to your new discs. Don't forget to get new serated star washers, they are cheap enough.

I seem to remember some moans about these two-three years ago. Naively, I imagined they'd sorted it by now...

I had an Astra (1.6 SXi) hire car earlier in the week. A pretty good car and a big improvement over other Vauxhalls I've driven. But...

The indicator (and wiper) stalks drove me 'round the bend. Every time I cancelled an indicator I ended up indicating the other way and the easiest way to stop the winscreen wipers and bidet working was to switch the ignition off....

WHY?!!!!!!! Read more

When I took my driving test I had to indicate by sticking my right arm out of the window. I think if I had a new Vauxhall I'd go back to doing just that.

Now then - I decided and hope to complete on my new motor shortly.

In the meantime I need to sell my trusty old steed who has looked after me well. Regularly serviced, MoT due next February (which is when it would normally have its service too), CD player, Alloys, 76,000 on the clock (true), good tyres including spare, generally problem free and good looking for the year 1994(M). What price should I expect to realise for my 2.0i GLS Vauxhall Cavalier? I will wash and polish it and hoover and clean too if you wish :-). Read more

>>> If you are determined to sell it despite the advice above then the A4 ad in the car window is a good way to go<<<

Tempting to say 'why advertise an A4 in the window of a Cavalier?'....

Seriously, the only thing I know about economics is that the 'right price' for any item is what some poor sap is prepared to pay for it. So if you give it a really good valet inside and out and advertise it as low-mileage, GLS-spec with extras, much-loved and very clean, you might get someone who loves Cavaliers and is prepared to pay over the odds for a good one - a retired chap, say, buying a car to last him for the rest of his life.

You could even try £900 - you might just get a bite - then be prepared to climb down gradually.

1) Apologies if this has been posted before. I did look.

2) It's quite a long read - three pages.

3) I found this VERY interesting, and it really leaves you feeling "what happened next?

4) Do you techy guys have any thoughts about its worth?

From the BBC news website -

"At the Vopek terminal in nearby Thurrock, one protester who drove his car on to the wrong side of the road to try to block a tanker was moved by police. An ambulance was called after he complained that he had hurt his back.

Two demonstrators who turned up at Shell's refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, were frightened off by the size of the media pack, according to a police source."
