I just needed a runabout, and got a 1994 Primera 1.6L with 200,000 miles for 160 notes. It's got history up to 185,000 miles. The engine pulls strongly, the brakes are strong, and it tracks in a straight line.

Anyway, anyone got any tips about what I should be watching out for on this car? I only got it last week and plan to drive it over to Calais on Saturday. Is it the usual oil level, fluid level and tyre pressures I should check before my trip?

Thanks. Read more

Yesterday afternoon, will all the familiy in the car, I turned right at traffic lights. There was very little traffic. As I turned right I spotted a car parked close to the junction, facing me and on the opposite side of the road. As soon as I spotted it, the rear offside door opened and a yobbish looking person got out and walked across the road into the path of my car; he then stopped walking! I hauled the brakes on and stopped inches before I hit his legs. He then stared me out, and sauntered across the road whilst being generally abusive.

As I had my wife and two children (baby doesn't count) as witnesses that he got out of the car, walked across the road without looking and stopped in my path, would I have been arrested if I had hit him and possibly seriously injured him? Would I have been believed about his stopping in front of me?

I was sorely tempted to drive over him, but realise that this would have prejudiced my position!

I was once driving through Guiseley looking for the Brook Motors works when I saw an old lady (probably about my age) standing on the kerb and looking intently to her left, away from me. She looked and looked and looked, and I went slower and slower and slower, until she stepped out and I stopped with her between my front nearside wheel and the kerb. She looked quite shocked to see me, and stepped back onto the kerb. I got the impression that she was almost blind. I'm very glad that I noticed her first.

The cost of replacing a main-beam headlight bulb on a Renault Espace Privilege is £196.30 for the bulb and a further £22 for the fitting.

This price to me seems totally unbelievable and I was wondering if anybody on the forum can surpass this appalling rip off ???? Read more

I can't believe that a bulb could cost so much! Thanks heavens for the cheap as chips halogens.

At my local VAG specialist, labour is in the region of £24 an hour which probably explains why my car is having a service, MOT and coolant change for considerably less than one poxy bulb.

Hi,

A family member has a 1993 Cavalier saloon. One of the rear doors won't unlock with the central locking or lever.

Any ideas on how to get the door trim panel off with the door closed?

Thanks in anticipation .........

Sounds like either the C/L unit in the rear door has failed, or it's not receiving any power. Whichever it is, it sounds like the door is still deadlocked - hence why you can't open it by lifting the button. You could try opening the front door and wiggling the wires that go into the rear door from the B pillar whilst someone else operates the C/L, in case it's a broken connection somewhere in the loom.

Hi all,

I traded my old car in in April which was on it's last legs. I just got through a letter from DVLA stating that I owed them £19 + a £40 admin fee for the car's tax disk as I am still the legal owner, even though I got a form from the VW dealership at the time stating the opposite.

Where do I stand, does anyone know? If the fine isn't paid within 2 weeks it goes up to £80. Read more

Thanks everyone for your help on this, it's great to be able to draw on previous experience - and as we all know, there are often best ways of dealing with this sort of problem that aren't apparant from simply reading forms & official letters.

I'm loosing coolant from the rear of the engine (1994 2 litre 8 valve petrol), towards the timing end. I fear the leak may be from the core plugs (although I have not completly eliminated a problem with the oil-encrusted cooling pipes). Is it practical to replace core plugs without removing the engine from the car? Access seems very limited, especially towards the right rear because the sub-frame and driveshaft bearing carrier (etc) are in the way. I'm finding it difficult to see the source of the leak, let alone imagine how to fix it!

I'm hoping there are "Back Roomers" who have solved similar problems and are willing to offer advice.

Thanks, in anticipation.

I've only just seen this post, but if I had seen it originally, I would have pointed to the plastic housing immediately. They are well known to leak, and replacements are not expensive. Fitting them is an absolute mare though! The only real way is to remove the O/S drive shaft to get enough room - and even then you will be faced with a load of PSA 'one way' jubilee clips you have to chiesel off. Expect 3-4 hours labour at a garage to fit this £10 part....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

My Shuma (Y reg) has just come back from the bodyshop (Friday) following an insurance repair. It's still where the garage parked it! The car was driven the 15 miles from the Garage to my house, but now when I try to start it the starter motor will struggle to turn even once and then give up. I have tried re-charging the battery but that has no effect. Any ideas? Read more

They might have taken the battery earth strap off when working on it and not fitted it very well. Or the battery might be a goner.

Hi,

Does anyone know the best place to get a high performance/quality set of HT leads for a 1977 Mk1 Ford Granada 3.0?

My current ones are prone to breaking down when the car gets too warm. A certain car parts superstore isn't much help. Read more
