September 2005
You may know from my other posts I have been looking at changing my car.
Anyway, went to see what Ford could do today as was very impressed with the New Focus I had as a hire car for two days.
At least as good as the BMW 118d I tried a few days back in my opinion.
They are trying to offer me the following:
Ford New Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec Climate with the optional 17" alloys and metallic paint for £14500.
List price new is just over £16000.
Car is unregistered, BUT was built last November - it is showing on their stock list as a launch vehicle.
How much does this age matter?
Car is in showroom and looks OK at first glance.
However, have their been any major spec changes since this car was built?
Also, I am sure I saw there was a 90bhp 1.6 tdci engine at some point, whereas current ones are 110bhp.
Any way of telling which engine this car has?
On the surface this looks a good deal but any words of caution?
Dealers excuse is they need the registrations for the month, hence the price.

Can you assist me in finding a new right hand dash display unit (the one which indicates Satnav and computer information)?
The display on my Picasso has poor brightness and when the car has been running for 15 minutes, dims to an unreadable level. My local Citroen dealer quoted £1000 plus to change the dash after previously telling me that the light bulbs need changing. I had already changed the bulbs myself a year ago to no avail.

Something I should probably already know the answer too but....
I seem to remember being told when I started driving that you should never let a diesel run out of fuel - and that it would need a mechanic to bleed it (air?) to restart.
Was this true and is this still the case on modern cars such as the Mondy.
I might be running the tank a bit lower than usual if the panic buying goes on all week - but don't fancy an AA call.

Just to follow up on a comment I posted in the Merc build date thread.
The earliest cars with airbags are now over 10 years old and so onto their 2nd or third (or more) owner. Would you want to follow recommended procedure and have the airbags checked or even replaced on a car worth buttons? Will the market for 10 year old cars vanish if airbag maintenance becomes a MOT issue?

I've had a wide variety of cars since 1964 - all bought secondhand - and each has had a fully primed, ready to go airbag.
But don't tell her I told you.....

Watched a programme on Channel 5 yesterday - top ten earth movers (can't remember the name exactly). Some really cool machines on there (how sad am I?!).
That giant German built earth moving wheel thingy (picture was posted here a short while ago where a bull dozer had been scooped up accidentally) came in at no 10.
I loved that giant dump truck - could do 40 mph as well! Read more
Hi folks
Got another question on my '73 Triumph Stag, but it's relevant to any rear-wheel-drive car:
I'm hearing a wub-wub sound from the rear most of the time now - can almost feel it too, but that might be anecdotal. The diff is nicely filled with oil and the car is usually otherwise smooth and quiet.
Is that the rear wheel-bearings on the way out ?
Thanks

Yup bellows should be pulled back & greased as A. it stops the splines wearing & B. stops them locking up which gives interesting handling.
I've had this strange noise on various cars all independant rear. Mine have been odd tyres on rear, can even be odd tyre wear. A knackered CV joint on the Grananda whih sounded like a diff problem. A gearbox mount & a problem on the Alfa 75 which turned out to be tyres themselves looked OK but on replacing both the noise completely went away. This was after replacing wheel bearings both sides! Not cheap but luckily the warranty paid.

Took my car for MOT. The garage ran me back to the office with me as passenger and I hopped out.
Came to pick up car day later, paid the bill for minor work turned key and realised immediately there was a serious gearbox problem. The whole car moved with a shunt when I selected drive and there was a very loud clicking noise from the selector when pressing the foot brake.
Without leaving the forecourt I informed the guy behind the counter and explained the problem and told him I was taking it up the road to test it. Drove a mile - it wouldn't change gear so returned and told him of the problem. I recognised the problem as being the multi-function switch, a problem which had cost me about £700 in parts and labour more than a year previously.
His reposnse was to pass me the phone with the words "call head office mate" and walked away. I refused and insisted he speak to his boss, which he did in private. He emerged and said "nothing to do with us, we haven't touched your gearbox, it 's your bad luck"
I spoke to regional manager who said they wouldn't accept responsiblity and so I explained I was taking it to a auto-box specialist.
Problem was identified as a multi-function switch and transmisison ECU failure. I tried to source 2nd hand parts over the course of a few weeks but despite repeated efforts came up with nothing. I tried claiming on my insurance as accidental damage but they said it wasn't and so covered by my policy.
I sent repair quaots to the regional mamanger and asked them to pay for the repairs by a caertian date. I got no answer so went ahead with repairs at a cost of c.£1300.
I have had a letter from the garage aknowledging that they drove my car with me in it, but denying any responsibility for the problem.
I now want to sue the garage for negligence, with the proof that the gearbox was working perfectly when they took responsility for it. I understand that the legal term here is res ipsos locquitur - the facts speak for themselves - which will require the garage to prove they DIDN'T damage it, rather than me provide proof they did.
Sorry for the length of posting and I hope I have made it impossible to identify the garage in question.
I'm familiar with how to claim through small claims, but I'm interested to know if anyone has had a similar claim.
Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened with my Passat on the brake test, one of the brake light bulbs blew.
They went to replace it and then found they didnt have one in stock with the offset pins that are found on the Passat bulbs so it was off to VW for a couple of bulbs.
As always

My daughter has an ancient but trusty Mondeo estate car; it has a service history and the cam belt was changed at 90K miles. It has started running a bit roughly, particularly on the overrun when engine braking. It has gone into a local workshop where they have changed the injectors with no great improvement resulting. They are now saying that "The cam belt is out by 180 degs"; I don't know much but I can see that slipping one tooth could cause problems but it couldn't have slipped 180 degs and it could not have been installed wrong 15,000 miles ago or the car wouldn't have run at all, or would it? Comments most welcome Read more
"The cam belt is out by 180 degs"
If they mean that the cam is 180 out, ie upside down, then the valves will be open when they should be shut and vice versa. Obviously not the case.
If they mean that the crankshaft timing is 180 out, ie 1/4 of the 2 rotation cycle, I would have thought that it would have struggled to run at all. (Diesel engine re-assemblers please correct me if I'm wrong!)
Im going to change my grotty 307 -see thread in technical section- and Im wondering about the above mentioned. Im tall, need to be comfortable, automatic required but above all must be reliable. Boot space not a problem or looks. Whats your opinion please? Read more
Again thanks for all the comments- its great to find a site like this where the more knowledgeable help the less knowledgeable in such a friendly way. Many thanks!

They have brand new Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec 5 doors available for £13,995. The only thing that you would need to ask about is the upgraded alloys.
They are UK cars and from a reputable dealer group in the North East but they can arrange delivery and can certainly do part exchanges.
Might be worth a look?
