When I win the lottery tomorrow (I've got to win eventually) the first order of business is to buy a nice big house with a 4 car garage. The question then is what to fill the garage with. My current list is:
1. For day to day running about, a Range Rover. The supercharged one, I think.
2. For fun, a Lotus Elise. Preferably a 111R.
3. For intercontinental cruising, a DB9.
4. A true exotic, in this case a Konigseggg. Because I can.
Granted I havn't included a classic - I want to drive these cars, not spend time in the garage.
What would be in your fantasy 4 car garage? Read more
With my ongoing search for a new(er) car I test drove a 318 Ti Sport Compact(!) today.
I know the Compact has an 'image' problem but anyway...
It had a really odd whistling noise as I accelerated though. Is this normal?
Sounded like a turbo spooling up although I know there is no turbo on these.
I am certain it is not wind noise of any kind.

I thought the Ti was for Turbo Injection, but then again you would feel if the car was Turbo'd or not. If your not sure about it in any way, walk away.
I had a Mini Cooper S, that had a few niggly problems when I bought it from the dealer and I had nothing but trouble with it after that (I managed to swap it after a month of constant grief).
There a problem with my VW polo central locking pump. I have got one from the scrap yard, however, just wondering anyone know the wiring for it? eg, which colour wire to which number? there is 6 plug and 6 wire together, but i'm unsure which one go to which. Hope someone can help. (polo, 98 S' reg)

I own a 1997 Mk5 Passat 1.8 20V. It started to misfire last weekend running intermittently on anything from 2, 3 or all 4 cylinders.
I have since changed the plugs, and the coil pack and this has not made a difference. Also, I have ran a compression test without receiving an adverse result.
I therefore deduct that there may be a fault must be with whatever powers the coil. What is this? And where can I find this item? Where can I find this item.
However....
I have also read somewhere that carbon build up in the intake manifold can also cause misfires. This is an interesting tidbid as my car started backfiring before it started misfiring.
Also, my multipoint fuel injected car runs on LPG using a single point LPG injection system (Leonardo). I mention this in case it may increase the chance of carbon build up?
Anyway, the backfires only ever happened on 3 occasions.
> 6th Aug after 60 mile motorway journey. The backfire seemed to be in the manifold? As it was not loud but I could feel it through the pedals, and it felt liked it had jumped out of gear or blown up!
> 29th Aug after a 100 mile motorway journey. The car backfired just as it had before.
>3rd Sept After a 4000 YARD journey. The car backfired repeatedly and and very loudly and behind my driving position, probably further down the exhaust system. Read more
Thanks for the advice, I have that booked.
May I just add I ran it on Gas on 18th Sept and it ran on all four cylinders, took it for a quick 600yd jaunt (steadylike). Just before I got home it backfired which stalled the engine and now it runs worse than ever on petrol and on gas - whooops.
HJ (in his car by car breakdown) mentions problems with water ingress into airbag ECU. Ours went in for recall but was not fixed correctly. As a result the car has had to go back in (the electrics started to play up big time) and our dealer cannot give us a delivery date for the required parts.
Our C8 is a year old, so what's the legal situation? How long do they have to source the part and fix the car before they are obliged to replace it (like for like)? Or can they keep it indefinitely? Read more
SWMBO returned home the other morning complaining that her wipers had had an argument; easy enough to diagnose, the connecting rod between wheel boxes had dropped off the centre ( passenger ) pivot due to the plastic bush wearing out ( absolutely disgraceful after only 230,000 miles! )
Unfortunately the main dealers want £123 for a replacement which effectively makes the car a write-off; I have therefore obtained a complete S/H linkage from 24/7 online breakers and this is the sticking point; I suspect if I prise the connecting rod off my S/H linkage, the middle-aged plastic bush will become instantly geriatic and fit as well as the one I currently have, I therefore would like to fit the complete linkage.
The wheel boxes look straightforward enough, if fiddly, but I cannot see how to get to the shaft nut on the wiper motor, is there an access panel behind glovebox or does the motor unbolt & pull forwards? If anyone has taken one of these out and could offer a few tips I would be for ever grateful. Read more
Mars bars are in a plastic/polymer based wrapper. Its also has a lubricant (teflon like) included to prevent the wrapper sticking to the chocolate.
Hence its slippy and quite wear resistant.

Hi,
I am thinking of spending around £10K on a Range Rover 2.5 (the BMW diesel one), for this money you can get a 2000 HSE with quite a few miles on it. Has anyone any experience of this car at this age?
Cheers,

Blimey, I'd much rather have the BMW! Why not buy one, and book yourself an off road driving day with the change? Both itches successfully scratched!
Hi all and hope you can help me.
Whist about half way through a journey I noticed a metallic clattering noise whilst slowing down for a junction, in gear, and when setting off in low gears which would eventually disappear when in the higher gears. This noise would also disappear when the clutch pedal is depressed.
The car did not judder and seems to be pulling OK.
Is this a warning sign that the clutch is on its way out as its still on the original after 102,000 miles?
Is there anything I can do to confirm that it is the clutch?
If it is the clutch, is a LUK replacement OK and what seals or bushes or anything else should I request to be replaced whilst the gearbox is out?
Does anyone have any idea to how much this is going to cost me?
Many thanks for all your help,
Martin

hi, sounds like the selector rod has been put under load by a moved component along its route(upper gearbox mount sheared,or exhaust manifold bolt) had a quattro years ago, exactly same fault as yours, turned out the selector rod was bent due to gearbox mount breaking, the only other symptom was increased vibration at the gearstick. the metal clanking was horrific in my case and was sure the gearbox was nailed!! .
i got mine fixed for about a ton, but rear diff failed straight after and she had to go. good luck
Focus 1.6 Zetec idles perfectly hot or cold. However when started about half an hour after having been hot, the idle see-saws around quite markedly for a while before the engine becomes hot again.
Any suggestions as to what this may be caused by ? Read more
