Pug 307 - Warranty - TonyE
Just a quick one. My wife has just bought a pug 307 on a 54 plate with about 12k on the clock. It is now back at the main peugot dealers where she bought it from (on finance). So far she has noticed

1 - tracking seems out
2 - rear door handle on drivers side is faulty - won't always open from outside
3 - strong smell of petrol
4 - revs seem to stick high

The car was previously owned by a rental company {generalised by DD} - hence the tracking! The car still has some of its manufacturers warranty left. They are saying that they are going to charge her to fix the tracking - we don't know about the other problems yet. Is this normal. She has had the car for less than 2 weeks.

Also, at what level could you reasonably say to the dealer that you are not happy with the car and cancel the finance agreement - if at all? The guy told her it was a 1.6 when she bought it. It turned out it was a 1.4. Personally I'd say that was gounds in itself.

If the engine size is not as stated throw it back straight away and complain to trading standards about misrepresentation.

The 1.6 is a far better engine for the 307 - I think you'd find the 1.4 more difficult to sell on.

It will be covered on the finance agreement somewhere but she didn't spot it. I asked the guy on the forecourt who said 'not sure. I think it's a 1.6'

In the words of Mr Goldwyn " a verbal guarantee isn't worth the paper it is written on". I would go for it, but unless you have some sort of document or independent witness of what was said, this may prove difficult

How was the car described on the finance paperwork and how was it described on the dealer's receipt or invoice? If it was mis-described you must have case; if it was correctly described but not what you thought you were buying, ie you didn't read the paperwork and spot the error, than I think you have a problem which can't be got round.

Get rid- the car is not as described PLUS- see my thread on the technical part of this site. I have a 2001 51 reg 307. The 4 year service cost me £522 2 weeks ago , and now faulty sensors are going to cost me £411. I would never deal with Peugeot or any of their garages again let alone buy a 307. As soon as I get the sensors fixed Im putting it in part exchange. VERY DISAPPOINTING to say the least. Did I mention that it failed its mot on sheared rear spring. Peugeot so surprised on a car this age and mileage that they sent mechanics to photo the car and they paid for the parts and labour! Look at the Honest John car by car breakdown to see the faults your car is in for. I wished Id looked before I bought mine!

Good luck

You may - or may not still have your 307.

I bought one last month (1.4hdi) - 13 months old and 10k on the clock thus far it's spent 3 days at the dealers having niggles sorted (all at their cost). I'm told the car is designed to pull to the left in case the driver falls asleep - I guess that's why Citroen have fitted their seat vibration system then (swapping the front wheels cured the problem, incidentally). I still have a slght clutch judder@ oow revs but that's possibly the nature of the beast.

Biggest problem with the car is fuel economy 30% below expectation. (Over 20% worse than my old Passat 1.9 dti, so I'm not impressed) Dealer says it's because engine is tight. Possible correct as liberal thrashing is improving acceleration and economy slowly. Dealer tells me that they use Castrol GTX Magnatec in a diesel??? I will use a decent oil at the next change (+ 7k miles). I will also fit a K&N air filter.

I didn't bother with extended warranty as I'm going to use the car as a driving school vehicle. Plan is to run it for 12 months and get rid.

Once warranty is out, the car won't go near that dealer for sure. And I should have bought a Skoda. My fault for poor research.

An update on this (and thanks to all responses)

The car went back to the local pug dealer where it was bought from within 2 weeks of purchase. They could find nothing wrong with the clutch/gearbox (if they checked - see later) and replaced a pin in the door handle to 'fix' it.

This week it has gone back. The door handle is still faulty and the door will stil not always open from outside the car. My concern is that the rear doors have the child locks on and failure to open the door from outside the car is surely a safety issue. Given that my son is blind it is also inconvenient as often he has to struggle accross the back seats to get out of the car - We bought a 5 door car, not a 4.5 door one!

This weekend I drove it for the first time and nearly wiped out my family and myself. I noticed that the biting point for the clutch seemed really high, to the point that I had to stop and raise the steering wheel. At a roundabout I put my foot down to join the traffic, only for the car to rev loudly and creep slowly into the road into the path of an articulated lorry. Much panic ensued! I took the car round to the original dealers who stated that 'a clutch does not take long to burn out'. Basically they are trying to shift the blame, even though we have only owned the car for 7 weeks, complained about the original fault after 2 and have done less than 300 miles in the car which has 12k miles on the clock in total. As stated before the car was origianally a hire car and we all know how they get treated!

They were unable to contact my wife yesterday to get authorisation to strip down the gearbox and so only started work on it late in the day, meaning that she is without a car for another day. They would not offer her a courtessey car. Infact, the first time she took the car in, she had to cadge a lift of one of the mechanics, who told her that the dealer staff use the courtesey cars - hence there being none available.

Their parting shot yesterday was to imply that my wife's 300 miles has caused the damage to the clutch. However, in 10 years of driving (low mileage addmitedly) she has never needed a new clutch on her previous car. He even offered to take her out in a car to asses her driving!

We are waiting for their latest update with the details of trading standards to hand. We are adamant that we are not paying ANYTHING towards this repair. I will also be getting in touch with Peugeot UK today depending on thier response.

Sorry to hear of your predicament.

Time and time again on this site we hear of stories of useless peugeot dealers, they seem to be the worst of the bunch!

A shame really because i had such a good experience with my old 306, but after trawling this site i wouldn't have replaced it with a 307 in a million years.

I have to admit that I didn't want her to get a pug after reading the reports on here but hoped that the service would be better when buying from a main dealer instead of any other used car sales place.

To say that I am not impressed is something of an understatement

I think you will find all makes have their good and bad dealers. Unfortunately there seems to be little consistency applied by the manufacturers.
Pug 307 - Warranty - TonyE
The dealer has been back in touch and has decided to fix it under the manufactureres warranty. I will never ever buy a peugeot again though! I may still write to peugeot uk to complain about their poor customer service though.
Pug 307 - Warranty - Munro
If you do write to Peugeot I suggest its to the Managing Director/Chairman not Customer Care or similar.
I had a problem with Ford last year who effectively renaged on an admittedly verbal statement by a member of the normally excellent Glasgow call centre.Having battled with a very arrogant member of their staff I was so incensed at the attitude that I checked the Ford web site, got the name of the chairman (Roger Puttnam) and rang Ford UK HQ. Rather cheekily I asked "Can I have Rogers fax No", it was given without hesitation and a 4 page letter was duly dispatched to him by fax.
The following day all was sorted quite satisfactorily!!
Good luck
Munro
