Evening,

Bit of a twist. My mate (no really) bought a laptop and a router a fair period of time ago (close to a year) to be honest and since then, the router's disconnected every single day, the rewriter on the laptop's packed up and general slowness.

Now, the problem is, he never took it back or complained so, is he entitled to a refund now? It's never worked so he's not trying to pull a fast one. He's just fed up of it now. Would getting Trading Standards involved if the company refuse a refund (a high street retailer) be worth it?

Any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated. It's a long shot and he's probably chancing it but he's paid for an extended guarantee/warranty.

Cheers

The 'deeds' are a bit misleading these days, since providing the property is registered* all you have is the land certificate**, which is really just a copy of the information in the land registry. Your solicitor can request an office copy of the land registry entry easily.

* if the property has changed hands in the last 20 years or so it will be registered, as registration has been compulsory since then. If it has not, then it may not be registered (I had to register my late Grandfather's house in 2001 after he died, as he had owned the place since 1939!). If it is NOT registered and you do not have the title deeds, then you are going to have a hard time proving you own it (I would imagine, although I have not had to do this!).

** although other things tend to be lodged with the 'deeds' eg information relating to modifications to the house, warranties for dampproofing. Where a house is mortgaged it is normal for the lender to hold onto these documents for safe keeping and as security over the property (although they will also have their interest noted at the land registry).

Morning all, hope you had a pleasant weekend
Washing my '98 E Class Estate last night and horror of horrors the offside front wing wheel arch is nearly rusted through.
Can you advsie if it is a bolt on/off item and can I do it myself. I would of course have to get it sprayed professionally.

Thanks in advance

Sadly in the mid-1990's MB were persuaded to adopt 'modern' 'Anglo-Saxon' management techniques. Lots of German managers were sent to do US-style MBA's and 'shareholder value' became more important than producing good cars. Now we see the result.

My 2001 shogun is coming up for its 54,000 service! Dealership wants £560 to service! So I am going to a good independant. My question is the auto fluid is due changed, would it be worth while going to an autobox specialist to get it properly flushed with the correct tool, because i know you cant do a complete change cause half the oil remains in the torque convertor? Also does anyone know who makes this transmision it is the five speed tipronic? suspect asian warner.

Initial adaption takes place over a couple of hundred miles - the 'box continually adapts though.

They are pretty reliable. The thing that kills them is overheating - heat is the enemy of all auto's. If you are into towing then a cooler is a good idea. Keep the fluid clean with regular changes.

Hi,

I can't afford an alarm so I've been looking for a suitable mechanical-locking device to go a little way to help prevent my car being stolen, or at least help discourage a potential theft.

I've got a standard 2002 VW Golf 1.4S

The Thatcham website isn't much help, except for:

Thatcham Category 3 (Cat 3) - A mechanical device, such as a steering lock.

Any idea how long a Thatcham Category 3 mechanical anti-theft device is supposed to last against an attack to remove it ?

Some of the devices I've been looking at, like AutoLock, don't seem like they'd withstand an attack for long, and only the full steering wheel cover locks seem to offer a degree of protection, but its seems a bit bulky looking and not ideal to carry around in my family car.

Are there any other anti-theft devices I'm missing which you could recommend ? Also I was wondering if there is any decent anti-theft device which somehow prevents the pedals being pushed down. Read more

I think some of the earliest models with PATS are now becoming stealable, just, but the joyriding industry is still just a shadow of it's former self.

Stealing cars with the owner's keys is where it's all at now, hence the rise in the number of homes burgled for the car keys and also the number of carjackings.

I own a 2004 Vectra Sri.I am the 2nd owner. When I use the air-con and then turn it off, after a while there is a "stale" smell. It smells like sweaty socks (I imagine). The dealer told me they drained and recharged the system, but it's much the same. How do I get rid of this?? Read more

I had the same problem but some advice in this column a long time ago seems to work. Check the drain pipe, if it's blocked, water tends to drip into the footwells but it's generally noticeable. Every month or so, run the air con as cold as poss for 5 mins and then switch to full heat for 5 mins. Also, use your air con as much a possible. The smell only seems to appear after periods of it not being used. Other than the smell issue, the refridgerant acts as a lubricant and lack of use leads to dried out and ineffective seals which are expensive to replace. The sprays and dealer 'clean outs' are expensive and short lived.

my friends engine light has just started illuminating on his X reg rover 25. it is the engine light without the ! in the middle of it. The problem is that he lives miles from anywhere and he has lost his handbook. Does anyone know what the cause of this light is - i do know he needs new brakepads. could be that?? thanks Read more

Thanks for all the help! Turns out that both the Cam sensor and the lambda sensor were at fault - thought that was a bit strange! Paid £250 for a garage to do both the sensors - car is running much better now! BTW - its now got new brake pads

I've been trying to fix a friends fiesta 1.6 zetec s (the one with all the skirts and alloys etc). It is overheating after about 25 miles and the fan comes on when the car is travelling along. I am thinking that it is the thermostat, is there anything else it could be?
I took it out for a short thrash and could only get the temperature to half way at which point the fan was coming on. could this mean the sensor for the fan swithes on too early?
any thoughts would be apreciated. it recently had a new water pump to try and cure this problem. Read more

Grease_monkey

I had a Zetec 1.25 (just lower than yours) and if i was stuck in traffic wheither it was motorway or A or B road the temp gauge would rise JUST abouve the M on morm but not enough to go in to the red if you know what i mean then the fan would come in. i had the car nearly 2 years before reluctantly selling it for a diesel focus which handles alot better.
I don't think you have too much to worry about, 25 miles is a pritty good drive and if you think about it everything will be up to temp so if your stuck in traffic it will get abit hot due to the no air flow through the radiator because your stationally or driving slowly!
If the needle is really up the outer range of the red when the fan comes in i would start worrying because this could start upsetting your head gasket!!

My wife and I are off to China in October, but her digital camera has its own rechargeable battery. I'm sure one of the extremely nice correspondents on this forum can tell me what kind of electrical sockets are to be found in China so we can buy an appropriate adaptor to charge up the battery. all air-cons are by design de-humidifiers too.

not all de-humidifiers are air-conditioners.

air coolers have a reservoir of water that soaks into a membrane in front of a fan. as the warm air is blown over the damp membrane the water evaporates thus cooling the air.

directly in front of the cooler the air is a couple of centrigade cooler, but due to the evaporation the room gets very humid.
