I have a Scenic II, 1.9dci engine with 18,000 mile services. After reading various threads on here and other forums, reckon I should get the oil changed just now, 12000 miles, as the car is used for a lot of stop / start journeys.

Now my technical knowledge could be written on the back of a grain of rice! I have read the sticky oil thread but a couple of questions.

1. Manual says use 10W40 or 10W50. I believe the best oils are fully synthetic, do these come with the same name ie 10W40 or is it different?

2. Any particular oil I should look at, bearing in mind it will get changed again at 18000 miles?

3. Where is the cheapest place to buy the oil - my local independent can physically do the work for a tenner or so I am sure. I assume I should buy a filter from the dealer to avoid any problems with warranties etc? Or will one of the fast fit places do it cheaper? Manual says it takes 4.8 litres.

Any advice (in lay man's language) would be appreciated.

Rattling sunroof when cold is easily fixed. My Megane did this and the dealer adjusted the runner or something. Not had the problem since.

Marginal whether this is for the Computer Related Questions or I have a question thread. Mods: You can decide.

I have spent years and years trying to pursuade my brother to learn a little about how to maintain his computer. Such advice falls on deaf ears ("I don't know what goes on under my car's bonnet and it continues to work, so why do I have to learn how to maintain my computer?"), with the consequence that as fast as I recover his PC from a virus or trojan attack, I get the next phone call!

Well, he gets married shortly and I'm his Best Man. Looking for a speech theme, there's got to be some serious mileage with this subject. You get the drift; likening the workings of his PC to a woman, the head in the sand approach, and so on.

I've browsed the web extensively, but haven't unearthed terribly much material. if any Backroomer knows of anything suitable - be it text based or graphics based - please will you be kind enough to share it.

Many thanks! Read more

Thanks for your replies

I have managed to borrow a Halina installation CD, installed the program and then uninstalled it . My scanner is now working OK, all is well that ends well.

If Live8 is being held in Hyde Park, can they legally prevent people entering? I thought it was common ground.

Second question: My sister had her phone stolen while at college. Upon accidentally ringing her old number some six months later, someone answered it! Any advice on extracting the guy's name and address from him? I doubt the police will be interested in doing anything, but hopefully the person is studying at the same place or his employer could be informed.

Cheers,

David. Read more

It occurs to me that frostbite will not mind if I repeat the kernel of my e-mail here, for the sight of others interested....

To the best of my knowledge the answer to whether you can revive a licence is yes. Granting that, the
answer to whether a former B licence would cover for the hf bands is definitely yes. One would have a Full licence; there is no distinction between "As" and "Bs" (to the annoyance of one or two of the former at one stage!).

I have GM0IRZ, but a bit after the eventual defeat of the Morse
dinosaurs I was allowed to revive GM6KKP and have been mostly using that on the hf bands (given my Morse capability it is more honest!).

Hi

Hope someone can help

I have a problem with water leaks in my 1998 Audi A6 saloon.
The problem lies with water gaining entry into the back passenger footwell. Ive taken the pollen filter out, battery etc to check all drain holes are unblocked.
Last night I put a hose on the windscreen and the water started coming through the air inlet (through the pollen filter) the pollen filter was soaked.

Ive checked the plastic around the windscreen and all seems fine. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Slight mod to subject to make it clear it wasn't a coolant problem - PU

New filter housing (gasket not available separately) seems to have fixed the problem. Reasonable price for part: £11.00

Behaving strangely: on using indicators, works fine, but (sometimes) when turning them off seems to click very fast for a while, and then stop. When it's making this noise it is NOT firng any of the indicators. Is it on its way out? I THINK its behind the hazard switch. (used to be on the passat) anyone know how to access it?

I don't know why, but it occure to me this morning that whilst my car has a inner ring on the speedo showing my speed in KPH, when I have driven hire cars aroard there has not been the equvilent MPH inner ring.

Is there a specific reason why UK cars have this conversion scale?

When I asked Bentley direct about exporting a 1990s car they came back, very politely and helpfully, and said 'we will only issue the relevant paperwork if you have modifications done by an official Bentley dealer and you will need a new speedometer, reading in KPH. That will be 800 pounds odd plus VAT'.
When I rang and pointed out that the cars already have speedometers that read clearly in miles and kilometres, the very helpful young woman said 'oh, all right then...''

Can someone please tell me why some cars ,seemingly older ones, in France have yellow headlights and others don't and they have black number plates on some cars and not on others, is this also to do with age? Read more

It was around 1992 IIRC that the "phares jaunes" finally started to disappear into automotive history. I remember my white (=foreign) lights - perfectly aligned for driving on the right, I should add - getting the last angry flash of Gallic indignation around that time.

As to number plates, it was also in the early 90s that black on white (or yellow at the rear) became standard number plate colours in France, and a few years before the new (April 2009 onwards) sequences were introduced, black on white front AND rear became the norm. (I'd love to know why this can't be done in the UK - if there's one thing that makes a UK car stand out and more likely to be targeted, it's those black on yellows!)...

Imagine a tyre with the sidewall nomenclature: 225/45 R17 91Y

This 'decodes' as:

225 - The width of the tyre in millimetres

45 - The aspect ratio, otherwise known as the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of width. In this example 45% of 225mm = 101mm

R - Denotes radial construction.

17 - The diameter of the inner rim in inches.

91 - The load capacity of the tyre per an industry standard table. In this example the load capacity of the tyre is 615kg.

Y - The speed rating of the tyre from the table below. In this example, the maximum certified speed is 300kph / 186mph. In simplified terms, the rating is obtained by increasing speed in 10kph increments, each for ten minutes duration, until the tyre starts to fail.

Tyre Speed rating table (Rating / kph / mph)

S 180 / 112
T 190 / 118
U 200 / 124
H 210 / 131
V 240 / 149
W 270 / 167
Y 300 / 186
VR 210+ / 130+
ZR 240+ / 150+

Now imagine a Pirelli P6000, this being a tyre widely considered to be run of the mill; it is factory fitted in huge quantities to 'family' and 'executive' cars the world over and is specified as a replacement by many a leasco. Both are large markets where manufacturing cost is a major factor, and you would think as a consequence, tyre design targets would become marginalised.

Further imagine therefore my surpise that Pirelli P6000 tyres with a 186mph / Y rating are fitted as standard to my Volvo V70 2.4T.

I was so surprised that I actually double checked the marking. As it happens, on my car the factory electronic speed limit (137mph) has been removed as a result of the BSR software that I installed, but unless I got lucky with the tyres (I doubt it) it makes me wonder why Volvo bothered with such an odd limit in the first place. Even if ECU software is considered to be 'global' and in some markets lower rated (perhaps winter) tyres will be fitted, it's still a might odd maximum speed to choose for a limiter. Read more

Having thought about it one of the biggest factors (tongue in
cheek) is that lower profile tyres tend to be made in
higher speed ratings. The car manufacturers tend to fit lower
and lower profile tyres (fashion) and hence cars have over-rated tyres.
Anyone know where I can buy a 225/40R 16 rated at
just 110mph?

Very good point.

Yesterday one of the key fobs for my Vectra went dead. I don't think the battery has run out because it worked perfectly up until yesterday (what I mean is, usually you can tell if the battery is running out, you have to start pressing the buttons a bit harder and stand closer to the vehicle).

I changed the battery anyway (a procedure I have done serveral times before), but it still does not work. Thankfully, the other one does. On visual inspection there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with it. I am thinking that it has probably lost it's programming and needs to be re-programmed, but could it be something else? If so, does anyone know where I can get this done without being charged an arm and a leg? Read more

That is cheap John. Last time I had any tech2 work done (3 ish years ago) it cost me over £30.
