Hi,

I have a W reg 2000 Peugeot 306 Meridian 1.4, and the "STOP" light on the dashboard keeps flashing whilst I am driving along but no other lights come on.

It sometimes stays on but I have checked everything I can think of but I can't get it to stop.

It doesn't seem to have an effect on the car as it still runs fine.

Could anyone please help me to find out what the problem might be????

Any help would be fantastic,

Thanks Read more

It will be one of the fans that is causing the STOP lamp to come on, as has been said.

Being a Peugeot Tech, I've replaced loads.

Got air con? Switch it off, does it make any difference to the lamp?

I seen on the DVLA website a few weeks back (can't find the page now) that you are allowed to drive a car with no MOT on the condition you have made an appointment with a test centre and are driving there to get the MOT done.

I'm wondering if I bought a car with no MOT or tax on it then presumably I could drive it to get the MOT done with no tax on it either. The other thing is does it have to be a test centre near to where you bought the car. For example if I bought a car and drove it 15 miles to a test centre near my home would that be allowed or does the law say the test centre needs to be local to where the car is?? Read more

some of the more remote smaller offshore islands are (or were untill very recently )actually exempt from mot tests due to no testing station, the rule used to be that residents had a week to mot when coming back to mainland but motors had to be in a roadworthy condition,Oban used to be a good place to sell old cars as long as the mechanics were ok.

I was wondering if Sainsburys 97 octane super unleaded was the same as Optimax. It is the same octane and a whole lot cheaper at just 2p more than 95 octane unleaded.

Some 95 per cent or more of the petrol I've put in my VWs over the last 13 years have been bought at the local Tesco.

Two Jettas notched up six figure mileages and I know at least one is still being used (it's now 15 years old) - none of these VWs have had any problems with the MOT emissions test and, in fact, were well within the criteria laid down.

Re RON levels - I seem to recall that the most expensive leaded petrol used to be 98 for a long time.

At our local Tesco the Super version is around 40p a gallon more - not that it worries me...:-)

I would like to know if any other x-trail owners have had a problem with the turbo.
I have an 8month old X-trail 2.2dci SVE.
I was driving up the road when I smelled burning and then smoke coming from the engine. I immediately pulled over and called the breakdown company. On examination it was discovered that there was a problem with either the seals or the turbo itself.
It was then taken on the truck to the nissan dealer where it is awaiting a new turbo.
I bought the x-trail after a lot of research and am now disappointed that this has happened.
I would be really grateful to know if anyone has had this problem or any other problems with this model. Read more

I don't think it's a Renault engine. The 2.2dCi in Renaults has a belt driven cam, in the Nissan it's a chain. It simply would not have made sense to modify this when a 2.2 engine could have been lifted steaight from the Renault range to power the X trail.

Question Water in petrol

Peering intp my motorcycle tank yesterday (to make sure I had enough to get the petrol station!) I spotted some water globules swilling about. Probably been there for ages, but I'd like to get rid of it/them. Simple (but awkward) solution is to empty tank and to dry it out - is there any smarter or neater method?

On a loosely connected topic, I've got an old helmet that is crumbling inside. Is there any better way of disposal than the local tip? Read more

I've bought some stuff from the CFS people. Good delivery time and you get a copy of their catalogue with price booklet. Really useful for all things fibreglass and filler wise so should be a good alternative to David's.

Hi, hope someone can help with this....

I now own a nearly new old shape BMW 330D auto which seems to use BMW longlife-01 oil. Handbook guards against anything else - no doubt as the oil is intended to last 15k miles or thereabouts. Does anyone know whether a direct equivalent oil is available through normal autospares retail outlets rather than the BMW dealer network where I am sure the cost for their branded oil will not be cheap!

Whilst I think about it, does anyone know if this oil is syntetic or semi-synthetic (I assume you cannot mix the two)?

Oil I have available from a previous 330D (when it was only 12k miles between services) is Castrol SLX 0w-30. It would be useful to know if using this would be acceptable or not?

Finally, I'm sure I've seen HJ write about 5k oil changes etc - does that still hold true with modern oils and engines?

Many Thanks in anticipation!

When I was thinking of buying an A2 1.6 FSI, I was specifically told that they needed sulphur free fuel, and the only example then was Optimax @ about 10ppm. BTW, using 95 RON in these engines means that the sulphur content is probably higher (cat not happy) and ignition timing has to be retarded, by the ECU. It loses some power and wastes fuel. 95 is not optimum.

Someone out there must have suffered the same as me. I served a year ban for driving (which I deserved!) DVLA have done medical checks and revoked my licence, stating verbally on the phone because my gp says so!! My gp has concluded because I have discussed my drinking habits with him that I have a problem. No blood tests, no discussion with me before his secretary filled in the form for DVLA and he signed it. They can't even find a copy so I have had to apply for it under the data protection act from the DVLA. In the meantime I had a bought a car as my consultant had told DVLA I could drive (he bothered to discuss it with me and send me a copy of his report.) I can get no help from anywhere, solicitors don't know what to do, I have "offered" myself for a medical with DVLA, but they are having none of it. Does anyone out there know what else I can do? Surely they cannot revoke my licence without proven medical evidence of "dependency or persistent misuse" surely a lot of people go out and have a few too may, but do they get their licences revoked? I think not. Apparently they cannot tell me which one I have been judged as being, but from now I am not allowed to drink alcohol for one year and then they will consider if I can have my licence back! So how do I prove that then! Couldn't they have told me this a year ago!! Any advice would be much appreciated I can't seem to find a website anywhere dedicated to moaning about the DVLA!!!!!! As Renault says the blood/alcohol content must have been a high reading - above 200mg in 100ml of blood- so therefore they deem a risk hence revocation of the Licence by DVLA. (Reg 74 MV Driving Licence Regs.)

Interesting one of the prescribed disabilties under MV Driving Licence Regs is "persistent misuuse of drugs or alcohol whether or not such misuse accounts to dependency." I would presume it is because of the first reason mentioned above. (Makes mental note to watch personal intake of Goats do Roam).

As I understand it having revoked the licence then DVLA should have invoked a procedure for medical examination (S 94(5) Road Traffic act 1988)and dependent on that whether or not the Licence is returned.

S 100 RTA 88 does give an aggrieved person the right of appeal to a Magistrates Court regarding the revocation.

If it is felt you are in a limbo regarding the Licence then it might be prudent to have a word with a Solicitor well experienced in Traffic matters.

130hp golf

Hi all,

can I use a cleaner such as Millers power plus injector cleaner in my 2002 130hp Pumpe Duse diesel Golf?
I am worried in case it damages anything as these engines are so specific with regard to oil grade due to the v high injection pressure.
There is nothing wrong with the car just that with previous low tech diesels I have owned I have run a tankful of cleaner through every 10k miles or so.

Cheers

Have used Millers Power Plus only for Cetane improvement when using Supermarket fuel - raises Cetane value by about 2.5..
Otherwise I use BP Ultimer.
If you use the car for short trip's then a good run at the weekends would benifit.

I spoke to someone very senior in diesel engine development;his answer, the cheapest fuel you can buy, additives don't give any power, but then he replaces his car every 12 months.

Generally, fixed race type bearings need to be pushed/pressed into a housing by the outer race, ie the one which is contact with the housing. They need to be pushed/pressed onto a shaft by the inner race. This is to avoid the force being applied going through the actual balls/rollers.
It pays to make sure that the housing/shaft is perfectly clean and free from all burrs/debris. It is also important to ensure that the bearing is started into the housing dead square, any "tilt" will cause it to dig in and jam. The "kindest" way to fit is with either a bespoke puller or a press. Depending on the size of the housing it is sometimes possible to fit it in a vice, but you have to be carefull that the inner part does not protrude further than the outer or you will push on that and damage the bearing.
However you fit it, make sure that the seals don't get damaged or it won't last long.

Hope this helps.
