I have full NCB on 2 cars so I insure both my car, which is registered in my name, and my wife's car which is registered in her name.

My daughter has just bought a new car, but not yet disposed of her old car. She wants to let her brother drive the old car for a few months. He is happy to insure it in his name - he is over 25 with a good record and some NCB(he has been driving a company car recently).

However the Insurance Company we all use(More Than) say you cannot insure a car - with any company - that you do not own; unless it is husband and wife.

It is not feasible for daughter to insure car, with her brother as a named driver, as he will be the sole driver; and it will be a lot more expensive.

Short of putting the car in his name, is there any way around this?

If you do find a solution please let me know.

Didn't find a solution - tried several Brokers and firms like Elephant, Tesco, Halifax etc and all took the same position as More Than. ie allowed between Husband and Wife but not Brother and Sister.

I think the problem is that operators in these call centres just follow their protocols.

In the end she 'sold' him the car!!

In process of renewing my insurance and realise that I have a £100 xs on my Esure policy for my 7 year old Saxo. The premium seems to change quite a bit if you increase the excess.

My question is what viewpoint do you take when selecting your excess? My Saxo is probably only valued at say £1500 so the slightest of damage would probably result in a write off.

If I am thinking correctly, the excess only comes into play when I am claiming against my own policy, the excess is the contribution / deduction I need to make to the claim.

Any damage that I incur myself ie. not involving another car, I would probably go to the scrappy to get the parts.

I think I am talking myself into increasing my excess!!

How do you arrive at your selected excess? Read more

I find that what used to be a £100 excess level two or three years ago is now automatically £150, £200 or £250.

Yet I'm retired, do a comparatively low mileage and haven't made a claim for more years than I care to remember...:-(

Could anyone tell me if the crankshaft on this engine ( L1H ) has a woodruff key locator for the pulley . I have been asked to do the timing belt and am aware that some of the ford zetec engines use taper fit . If not , does anyone know of a helpful Ford site . Thanks in advance . Read more

trymybest

yes this engine does have a woodruff key which will be at 12 o clock when the engine is at TDC. There are two timing marks on the C/s pulley when the lower one of the two is lined up with what looks like a casting mark on the sump then the engine is at approximately TDC.Hope this is of help.

What a fun day !!

On any other day I listen to Five Live in the car and would have received traffic bulletins every 20 minutes.

Today I decided, on the way from my home in Yorkshire to a job in Dudley, that I would have a CD on instead, so no traffic bulletins.

And I got caught in the 23 mile queue on the M18 / M1 due to a lorry up-ending in the roadworks at Junction 29.

Hit the back of queue at 9.00am.

1.30pm, 3 miles later and 4.5 hours later, visit to customer duly cancelled and re-scheduled for tomorrow, I reached junction 30 where I could turn round and go home.

Home at 2.30. Almost 6 hours in the car and got nowhere. Wasted day !!.

Anyone else have the mis-fortune to get stuck in this one today?

How did you get the title of this thread past the
rude-word filter?

A decision was made quite some time ago to drop the word 'sod' from the filter. That doesn't mean to say that we allow it to be overly used, and we would chastise anyone who attempts to use it as a personal comment toward someone else.

I'm thinking of changing my Legacy for another (an Impreza will have to wait for next year) but the price guides and asking prices seem to be all over the place. So what's a fair price for these....

2001 on a 51 plate Legacy 2.0 GL saloon, red mica, just under 25K miles, air con and the usual toys, from a main dealer so presumably FSSH, up for £7995 which seems a bit rich to me, presumably the low mileage is why.

Also what is the likely p/x on my 2001 W plate Legacy GL saloon, solid blue, a leggy 105k, dealer history to 55k then me with Subaru filters etc, recent cambelt fitted by dealer, no aircon, good P6000's, tidy looker but usual scratches, chips etc?

What sort of deal does anyone reckon I could get? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Mmm, a Spec B, now there's a thought. A bit dearer than an Impreza though. I must admit I prefer the looks and image of a Spec B compared to an STI, bling gold wheels and a huge spoiler aren't really me but... an Impreza is going to be more chuckable and faster too - I fancy the occasional track day. I really want an out-and-out performance car before I'm too old and doddery to enjoy it (some might say I am already). I can't see an big estate car handling anywhere near as well. I also thought about an EVO VIII, they look relatively restrained in silver. But again, dearer than an Impreza, and it doesn't seem the reliability and dealers are on a par with Subaru.
Perhaps I ought to spend a few thousand on a track day car and trailer and get a Spec B estate with a tow bar. Not the end of the world if I stuff it into the armco either.

So many cars, so little time (and money!).

My boss has the Audi A6 version 3l tdi and thats v nice too.

I won't be getting one unless they do a 2.2 petrol version. The reason is because of the way my co pays back business miles. It is far more "economical" to get a 2.2 than a 2.0.

Insurance cover is up for grabs next month so, although DirectLine has been excellent for the past two years, I've still undertaken the annual Internet hunt for the best prices and overall cover.

First stop was More Th>n which initially requires only basic details.

However, my 1999 VW Bora 1.6 16v SE wouldn't come up under the Year of Manufacture other than the 8v version so, as it's a November 1999 registered example and has the 2000 year specification, I keyed in 2000 at the YoM.

Up came the right specification but at an increased premium, so I e-mailed More Th>n last night querying this point.

The response was:

"Thank you for your email to MORE TH>N.

"We can confirm if the vehicle was registered in November 1999,
then this is classed as a 2000 model.

"We trust we have clarified this for you."

In turn, I've replied:

"Thank you for your reply.

"No, it doesn't clarify it for me - in fact it's completely illogical.

"The website states: 'Year of Manufacture'".

Am I being pedantic or do you agree that if you are requested for the year of manufacture then that should apply to the insurance cover cost calculation?

I've got a 1999 306 HDI which is exhibiting some strange behaviour. Occasionally you have to use the wrong button on the remote control to unlock the car (ie the button that should lock it.

When this happens the car then refuses to start and an independent electrician i had look at the car reported that the ECU reported it was locked out as if the key security codes had not been seen by the BDU (?) so was refusing to let the engine start.

Recently having left the car open, I returned and it refuse to start. I managed to clear this by locking the car with the key in the drivers door, holding it so the deadlocks activated and then bliping the car open.

Peugeot dealer claim their is no connection between the central locking and the ECU, but my car only refuses to start when the central locking is playing up (which fault is intermittent).

Has Anyone had a similar experience or think the dealer could be wrong ?

Check the drivers door harness, this fractures where the cables go from the door the column, £50.00 quid and they dont even put spade connectors on the other end.

The car will not start for you as if the car has deadlocked and you try to start the the immobiliser kicks in and you need a code reader for the ECU to reset the immobiliser.

I had the same problem and had to fix it this way.

Goto www.autotap.com here you can get the lead for the ECU to link to a laptop and read and clear engine codes, a must for a PUG owner.

Hope this helps.
