my friends engine light has just started illuminating on his X reg rover 25. it is the engine light without the ! in the middle of it. The problem is that he lives miles from anywhere and he has lost his handbook. Does anyone know what the cause of this light is - i do know he needs new brakepads. could be that?? thanks

The light is a yellow one, it is the light WITHOUT the exclamation mark in it. hope this helps!

Thats the MIL then.
There's a fault in the engine management system, somewhere.
A generic code reader (Found in most auto repair shops these days) will tell all.......

Thanks for all the help so far - but does anyone know of any commom problems or what the light could possibly mean? any help is much appreciatd. thanks!
|
It could mean thousands of things, really.
The ECU will have to be code read to determine the exact problem.
I'd reckon on a misfire or a lambda sensor fault.

thanks for all the help! i have advised my friend to have his ECU read. is £20 a reasonable price?? any help is most appreciated. thanks
|
£20 is indeed a fair price to pay for a code-read.
See what that comes up with.

cheers! will advise my mate - cheers for all the help!!

If it's the yellow warning light thats coming on (without the !), I thought these were brake related i.e. worn pads or low brake fluid.
I would check these before spending money that wasn't needed.
|
I thought brake related problems were red lights as in Red - DANGER!

Low brake pad light on my 75 is a yellow circle with 2 semi circles either side. If the fluid is low that is red with an exclamation mark in the middle.
Checked my handbook for my 214 but its 1997 model and doesnt have a brake pad wear indicator on it.

Its an audible one. ie a plate welded to backplate of pad. When it makes contact with disc you hear it/Time to change

Thanks for all the help! Turns out that both the Cam sensor and the lambda sensor were at fault - thought that was a bit strange! Paid £250 for a garage to do both the sensors - car is running much better now! BTW - its now got new brake pads
