I bought a year-old 2.2 diesel mid-December , mileage 9500.Overall, pretty pleasing but for one thing.
Reading through vehicle documents I discover some Vectras have a 1-year or 20k miles service interval, others 2 years or 30k.
But it doesn't explain which cars are which.
Now I'm anxious to do the right thing so as not to risk the 2nd and 3rd year warranty.
So I call Vauxhall ( previous owners of the car) , with VIN number, etc .
They can't say . They say the dealer can tell- but I have to book it in anyway to find out. So I book it in.
The dealer services the car anyway , cost £140. Says it needed it.
Today, a few weeks later , I happen to press the mileage trip button before starting the car .A light comes on on the dash, which I haven't seen before ,which shows service due at 30k miles .
What was probably a good idea originally turns out to annoy the hell out of the customer. Read more
water does not come out of the windscreen jets although the bottle has water and jets are clean and the motors driving the water are working. [ I can hear them]. How do I get to the water bottle to check the valves at the bottom of the bottle please?

Despite asking several VW dealers I've never got a definitive answer on which oil I should use in a year 2000 golf non-PD TDI (90bhp). I currently use SLX Long life which is a quality oil but is expensive and may be an over kill considering I change the oil every 4000 miles/6 months. Are there any cheaper alternatives? Read more

If anyone out there has opinions on the X-Trail 2.2 Dci as i'd like to know if this is a reliable SUV and get some idea on motorway cruising fuel consumption. The main issues with this car have been cam belt (chain) adjustments and black smoke on early 2.2 112 Bhp engines. Read more
Now if we can just get Dave out of that Cavalier....
Says the man who owns a people carrier named after a chocolate bar.
Anyway, it's a Vectra if you don't mind. And no, you won't get me out of that either.
I have been stupid.i have swapped a 1 1/2 yr old mini cooper which was in perfect condition.except for an annoying rattly dashboard ..for a 5 yr old BMW 318 ci..and now i have a big problem.
when i start the car from cold..ie after an all night stop.
the car starts and sounds like a true BMW.but after the oil has warmed up.it starts to have a clicking sound from around the tappets area. if i then stop the car ,and go back to it,,say 10,20,30 minutes later.when i restart it,,there is an awful tappetty sound for a second or two..then it goes.if i let the car cool again for hrs..it will then sound good again.
i have changed the oil 3 times in a month.i didnt trust the garage to put in the correct oil when i bought it.
i have used 0w 30...5w 30...15w 50[to thicken it]
now i am back on 5w 30..all being fully synthetic.i have not changed the filter once.the whole thing sound clicky wheezy when at its fully warm temps.it drives fantastic,,and looks great..it just starts like a diesel...can any1 give me a ball park figure for a new set of hyraulic lifters incl labour???
that is what i think is wrong....any1 help me??? Read more
Hi-
I have 02 plate E46 318ci 2dr coupe manual. It looks lovely but osunds dreadful!
When i start in it the morning- regardless whether its hot or cold- it sounds like a tractor! Like a grinding rattling noise coming from the engine- Sounds a bit like a distorted machine gun! Its horrible and embarisin! It doesnt do it after 2500rpm, but wen pulling off in 1st gear and sometimes in 2nd gear it sounds worse than a diesel sound (No disresepct to diesel cars!)
I have been told it could be the timing chain? Or the oil pump? Or the tensioner? Is this true and if so is this a difficult job to do?! Do i need to replace parts or can they be fixed? And is it going to be costly for the parts?
I do not need to worry about labour though- just need to know if it definately that?
Are there any possabilities it could be? Seems to be a common problem by the sounds of it- but have had so many different ideas that it could be- i dont want to pay out for it to get done?!!? lol!
Help me please!

Hi,
Last night I hit a pothole and split the side wall of the tyre.
The hole had just recently appeared, and is quite deep.
I had notified the local council (deleted) about the deteriorating state of this road some days previous, and received this reply : - "It is intended that repair works will be carried out in the very near future, I cannot be more precise
until this current stormy weather abates.
Thanks for your comments
Donnie Mcleod"
Knowing that (deleted) council seem to invent and change rules to stop them paying out, is there any wording I can use so they cannot wriggle out of their duty to maintain roads to a decent standard? I have photographic evidence, and the tyres were only 1 month old (done 1000 miles).
Thanks
Local authorities are also included in the Naming and Shaming rules, which are quite simple to understand.
Rule #1 - Don't.

And let that be a caution for those people who would believe, or have us believe, that a county court summons can solve anything and always in your favour.
Longest road in Britain, not the M1 or A1, it must be the A38, starts off in Cornwall south west of Liskeard, passes Taunton goes through Bristol, Birmingham, Derby etc etc ends up somewhere close to Rekjavik!
Anyone know the full length?

they will all be replaced by the as yet unmarked euroroutes .there is one starts in malaga(I think)crosses to dover and runs all the way to John o groats .The roman road builders dont get enough credit for laying the foundation of our modern roads network.
My passenger side electric window has stopped working.VW Passat 1.9TDi (2001).It has 57K on the clock.It stopped working a couple of weeks ago when I was putting it "up".It went very slow, got stuck,"clunked" at totally stopped.You can move the glass by hand now.If you operate the switch you can hear the motor driving (very rough)but the window no longer moves.Sopke to a VW garage today and a guy had a quick look.He operated the window and said the regulator was away.What I would like to know is;
1)Can I do this myself with a bit of effort.
2)Is there anything else I need to do?. It sounds as though the glass has came away from the runners.

You have to pay for the flashy new showrooms that VW are stipulating (like moi).
I am thinking of buying a CG125 and would like some advise and information from former and current owners.
I would like to know how economical they are (mpg wise).
Where can I get a fairing and screen from for this bike?
And how can I spot a good second hand one?
Thanks in advance

Greg,
I am a little concerned that somebody else's review has been posted here word for word - the author may not be happy with that. Therefore I have removed it, and if you wish to repost something, then please just link to the original article.
Also, whilst I have no objections to motorcycle threads, you'll probably not find the specific knowledge that you are looking for and may be better trying a bike oriented forum.
Lastly, I am a little curious as to what is behind this. You have at least 10 different registrations to the Backroom (and perhaps more that I would find if I looked carefully); a number of which we have disabled over a period of time for one issue or another. You are persisting with a detailed bike thread in an essentially car oriented forum. You are posting full reviews from elsewhere.
If, and I stress "if", you have an ulterior motive, then I cannot imagine what it could be. But I am watching and wondering.
Driving round the M25 today, Mrs S asked me why lorries carry their spare wheels up in the air instead of somewhere else. Y'know, on a dual axle (sometimes on the tractor unit, sometimes at the back of the lorry), a wheel is about a foot off the ground and not in use.
I patiently started to explain that they can be engaged or dis-engaged, and that they are engaged when the lorry is loaded to give better grip & traction. I've convinced myself (and Mrs S) that that is the reason, but is it, really? Read more
Echoing what others have said, lifting axles save tyre wear and reduce rolling resistance on empty or partly loaded vehicles. Lifting axles are non-driven, so lifting an axle can transfer weight to a driven axle to aid traction but this can put the drive axle over its weight limit in the process.
The other day I saw a long 3-axle rigid with its rear axle lifted. This reminded me of the legal argument over such vehicles that existed years ago - I imagine it's been resolved by now. It's to do with wheelbase and rear overhang. The rear overhang of a vehicle must not exceed 60% of the wheelbase. On a multi-axle rigid the wheelbase is the distance between the outermost wheel centres. On some vehicles with a rearmost lift-axle, if that axle is lifted it makes the effective rear overhang in excess of 60% of the effective wheelbase! This has implications bacause of the outsweep of the tail end when turning.

HJ,
I was told that Vauxhall had modified the oil feed to the cam chain to help *prevent* it from happening anymore.
