I know of someone driving with no mot (expired 2+ months ago),also brake fluid requires filling up occassionaly. tax ran out recently. Person says they cannot afford to get things legal and won`t/can`t listen to reason. Is there somewhere to report this, that isn`t going to reveal my id. Does anyone know of the procedures and would the owner get a criminal record or does it not have to be that serious? Read more

I once hired a van from a 'reputable' main dealer garage and only after driving over 100 miles did I notice it had no tax disc.

It's worth checking if a hired vehicle is taxed.

Hi

I'm currently running Windows 95 on my backup PC. This is constructed from an old AMD-K6 166MHz.

Unfortunately this system is very unstable. I've had to add a PCI IDE card to support a larger HDD and this conflicts with the BIOS which wants to rip it of all it's IRQ resources. I can't set IRQs manually as this just freezes the system at POST, so have instead told the BIOS that the NIC is infact an IDE card, and set manual resources for that. Pretty rubbishy I know! In Windows 95 I am met with constant errors and system freezes and hardware conflict.

So, I was wondering....

What with the cost of PC components being so low, I am thinking of upgrading it to an Athlon, therefore elimiating the need for an IDE card. Would this cause any problems for Windows 95? Apart from it's inability to recognise USB, and I don't need that anyway!

Thanks for all your help.

I was changing the oil in a friend's Ford Ka the other day.

I noticed rather than more usual 10W40 the old Valencia Engine in it took 10W30.

Now this seemed odd to me so I did some checking.

It *seems* that the Zetec engine requires 10W30 and Ford *may* be recommending the same oil just to be consistent over their entire range.

Am I being too cynical?

But the Anglia only had three main bearings,(I snapped a crankshaft next to the centre bearing in one)and no cross flow head. The Escort introduced the x-flow five bearing engine. As for oil viscosity I would use a slightly thicker oil when an engine is getting a bit worn,as long as there is no problem with hydraulic lifters.

The petrol gauge isn't working on my Peugeot 106. The fuse is ok ive had a problem finding the wires just to clean and see. Think the sender unit is stuck? Can it be taken out or would you recommend a garage? Haven't a manual to hand hence my ? many thanks ROB

robin - if your car has a carburettor, the fuel pump is probably on the engine. If injection or diesel the pump will be in the tank with the level-sender, which should have wires but no fuel lines connected to it.

Hi

HNY all!! :)

My sister has recently bought a Ford Mondeo 1998 Ghia. The car has alloy wheels and three have lead weights on for balancing - two front tyres and one rear tyre.

My question is - do alloys need wheel balancing weights? (If yes, why?) My Mondeo Ghia - bought new has not got any I noticed - drives fine.

Thanks in advance.

I never realised the imbalance came mostly from the tyres. That explains why a wheel ends up with about half-dozen marks where weights have been put on then taken off.

Anyone got any 'real-world' experience of the difference between these two engines?
There seems to be quite a big difference in the torque numbers (206 vs 243lb/ft), which is what is most important in a deisel.
Reason for asking is I've found a Mondeo that looks a good package but it has the 115 engine - would I live to regret not seeking out the higher power version? Read more

The Honda is quieter and drinks a little more..maybe? Handling about the same.

Handling, the Mondeo runs rings around it!

After reading the topic about the "near carjacking" I've had a quick look around to see what could be effective in preventing or at least escaping from it.

Seems that about the only product available is window "security film" - which apparently takes sometime for a "scally" to breakthrough.

Anyone have any experience of this or have it fitted ??

thanks

Think myself that if I was to go for some "anti-hijacking" product it would probably be the "security film" as this, in theory anyway, prevents them getting to you - if you have to use the Keyguard system then they've obviously got your car

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a new car from www.buyacar.co.uk since their price is £900 cheaper than anywhere else I've found so far.
Has anyone here bought a car from them or know anyone who has? If so, did everything go as expected or were there problems?

My 1998 Ford Galaxy 1.9TDI needs its ABS checking out as the ABS light is frequently always on. I would prefer to use an independent service agent to keep the cost down. Please recommend service agents in the North West (NW) London and Watford area.
