After 3 years of the CR-V we wanted another.
Problem is that only Honda dealer in 40 mile radius, sold us our last one as a one owner from new car (in fact had 3 previous) and denied all responsibility, serviced the car and neatly performed the screen wash scam on the bill, and in general treated in a very poor and unprofessional manner.
With much trepidation we went to view another used CR-V.
How refreshing it was to be treated by a salesman who didn't talk non stop, allowed me to drive him round for an hour, showed me all the paperwork and the V5, didn't give me any useless sales blurb, and eventually sold me a car which i consider to be a very good deal with no bovine.

P ex £7000;

My daughter took her 6 month old Yaris into the local dealer for them to repair the rubber seals on the top of the door frame. She thought that the seals (which had come unstuck from the frame) was the cause of excessive wind noise.
Believe it or not, they told her it was the wing mirrors! and that they would order her a new pair, spray them the body colour and fit them under warranty. They will also repair the seals when she returns.
Apparently, noisy Yaris mirrors are recognised by Toyota as a problem and have been redesigned.
Now, what can they do about noisy daughters?

Now, what can they do about noisy daughters?
-> Take two old Yaris door mirrors.
-> Glue some rubber weatherstrip around the outside of each mirror.
-> Clamp one over each ear with elastic bands to make the perfect fashion accessory!
My wife is looking for a new car and while trawling the net this evening we came across Broadspeed. On the face of it their offer looks excellent with a discount of over £1000 on a new VW Golf 2.0 SDI (UK supplied). There is also a facility for trading in an existing vehicle.
Has anyone used them and would they do so again?
Thanks Read more
Also give www.drivethedeal.com a try for a quote. Used them last year and they were very good.
I have just finished changing a head gasket on a 1996 Ford Fiesta 1.3 Endura E engine. Everything went ok until I tried to put the dipstick back in it's tube, It just will not go. It goes about 3/4 the way down then it feels something is blocking it. Am I missing something or any advise much appriciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I will check tomorrow it sounds like something has fallen. mfarrow you are right the dipstick is on the side of the block. But it definately moved slightly, not completely, when i removed the head. I am now wondering wheather there is a retaining bolt to the head for the dipstick which i didn't remove and may have bent the tube. Oh dear!
Looked at a couple of Ford Mondeos today. Both cars were identical 1 yr old LX's with identical specifications, very very similar mileages and even the same colour - black.
One in Harrogate was £9,999
The local one in Northallerton was £8,999
Why should this be? Harrogate is certainly more genteel, posher and affluent than Northallerton but this price difference makes no sense

I think this is because the car he has bought from you will then appear in the books at the higher price listed in the loan agreement. When he sells it on, typically to the trade, he'll get the true value, not the inflated one. Hence less profit (or a larger loss) and so a reduced VAT payment.
Today my wife and I went to look at a car we fancied buying. It was a 1 year old VW Passat at a VW dealership about 45 minutes from where we live. We had made an appointment to test drive a specific car and were both willing and able to buy it. We'd debated over a couple of weeks what to replace the current Passat with and had decided another Passat would do. We had even transferred enough money into the bank to be able to buy it on a debit card. Of course we didn't tell the sales girl about the cash in the bank but when she asked us when we anticipated buying we told her 'immediately'. We were not particularly impressed with the 'buying experience' at this particular dealer.
Frstly, she tried to get us to drive a different car so I could try the engine. She was not best pleased when we declined and said we'd test the car we wanted to buy. She then spent about 20 minutes getting fuel for it and trying to start it (complete with bonnet up - not very confidence boosting). Turns out the car had absolutely no fuel in it at all. Instant alarm bells since the manual for my Passat says never to let the fuel run out as this can damage the catalyst. When I eventually got behind the wheel, about 250 yards from the dealers, she said they had a standard test route, which would not include any dual carriageways or motorways. I requested a trip on the A1 to see how it drove at a decent speed. The A1 is about 15 minutes away. No way was the answer. Very fed up at this point, decide not to buy this car there and then so drive back to dealers. Why? We'd been kept waiting 20 minutes even though we'd made an appointment, the car was in a state my manual says to avoid for fear of causing serious damage and I was not going to be allowed to drive it properly. Salesgirl gobsmacked.
Out comes the sales manager, at my request, and there follows a patronsiing lesson in why the car was without fuel, how my Passat manual is wrong (!) and how they were too busy to give proper test drives. He didn't know that between us my wife and I have 3 degrees in Chemistry and so knew he was talking complete rubbish at times. Ha Ha. I might only be spending £11,000 but I don't really like being treated like someting VW have stepped in. Strong letter to Dealer Principal will be on its way soon and we are off to another dealer.
I feel better after that.
By the way: does the cat get damaged if the fuel runs out? Read more
Well, just this week I got a letter from the DP of the garage where I had the problem. Didn't really say anything at all. Just rhubarb about trying to meet expectations etc. At least he replied.
Does anybody know if the Volvo V70 (2000 on) can be set to auto-lock the doors above a certain speed? If so, how? Read more
No worries, Martin.
FYI, so it is no surprise if you get this software option applied: The doors and boot will all lock at about six mph, and remain locked until you manually unlock them or press the central locking button on the driver's door panel. i.e. they don't auto-unlock when the engine is turned off or the key is removed from the tumbler.
If you ever want to use the 'boot/tailgate only' release button on the remote fob to just open the boot or tailgate, whilst leaving other doors locked, remember that you have to press it twice within a couple of seconds. This is to ensure that a conscious command to use it was made.
Not that many of you were interested, but my 1993 335,000 mile Maestro van has finally gone. (To one of our mechanics - so not scrapped - yet!!)
& to prove the value you can get for just £1,600, try this..
97 R plate - soon to be VAN580Y reg.
117k
Omega 2.5 CDX Estate auto
Magic grey, totally original paintwork, a tiny rust scab below nearside rear door window, light crease in lower panel in this door too
2 careless tiny fag burns on drivers carpet-ashtray unused
All the toys - climate, traction control, elctric roof with 101 settings, too many other functions on the dash.Stack CD in the boot.
5 NEW Michelin Pilot Primacy (oversized) 225/65 16 on very clean alloys. Just priced them @ £152 each corner.
Direct Metropolitan Police - Ex senior officers transport, NOT blues n twos, job, none ever fitted. So it's also been driven professionally & properly maintained, too!
Looks like mid twenties for consumption, I'll get that improved, once I'm used to it.
It's strange enough driving a car - let alone a BIG petrol engine.
A proper valet/detail clean has been done, be myself, so looks showroom fresh.Service & belted, found no surprises, either.
So, I'll keep you informed as to what it's like running a bargain car!!

Alvin, glad I'm not the only one who appreciates Maestro!!
In fact, the number of buyers that used to come into our yard, wanting an Escort van & going out in a Maestro, surprised plenty of our competitors. (As boasted previously, I was known as KING of The Maestro vans, in auctions around & about the country!! I've sold dozens!!
The van began life as a water sample collection vehicle, with Anglian Water - so had a VERY light start for it's life, as a working vehicle. We got it just under 3 yrs old.£1700 + vat.
Mine had a turbo/power steering engine from H plate Montego, which itself had covered 110k, fitted at around 275k. So, considering we bought it at 110k, not bad going.
I've passed the full history to the mechanic, but other things included, gearbox & clutch around 150k, rad - punctured on M1 - you couldn't have shot .22 rifle more precisely, to get a hole in the fins, through the grill, 2 alternators, discs n pads a couple of times, 1 exhaust, & 3k oil changes. ! belt on original engine, 1 on second engine. They don't break!! NEVER had one go!!
The injectors were better after H reg, 2 stage, so a bit quieter. You might benifit from them being cleaned & serviced, if you're getting a bit smokey.
& thats about it, 45mpg average & a third of the time towing, too!!
Inside I fitted seats from Montego, for the better support, another carpet,(bright red, from n MG)a over the carpet for sound deadening, even had Vanden Plas veneer door cappings & chrome handles outside!! Good Rover stereo & my Trafficmaster were in there too. quality racking & lined in the loadspace was all worth doing, to keep things tidy.
Best £1700 ever spent!!
& still most comfortable vehicle, I've ever riden in!!

i didnt mean break in,,as in break something to get in
i meant that the AA can get in without hurting any thing,,,unlike a thief who would smash a window..
go see the AA man,,if your a member.....
then at least you can open the bonnet and boot for any info you need...vin number is visible from the outside,,but ecu number isnt..
Help....
This winter has not been too kind to the electrics on the car... if anyone could help with the below problems i would be very grateful..
1) Intermittant wipers not working. They stop half way and dont return to normal position. Work fine on continuous, but again if turned off half way through sweep they dont return.
2) Blower speed on 1 and 2 does not work - 3 and 4 do but is like driving in a gale when trying to demist car. 1 hasnt worked for months and then driving along today 2 has broken as well
3) Strange misfire until car has warmed up. Seems like chugging and running on 3 cylinders (expect electrical but dont know where to start replacing things). As soon as normal operating temperature (about 1 mile) it goes away and engine purrs as usual.
BTW car is 1997 214si with 101,000 miles.
Thanks Read more
point1: If this helps there is a clicking noise coming from behind the fusebox..very random so assume its the relay for the wipers.. a garage tried to charge me for a new motor but I am not convinced..will try the relay first and then get a motor from a scrappy...
Also as far as the resistor is concerned for the heater fan...how easy is it to change??
Things have got worse still as Monday evening the car wouldnt even turn over - £250 ligher and a new starter motor and everything is fine.....misfire when cold seems to have disappeared as had the plugs and engine flush done at the same time!!!
I think some washing-up liquids have salt added to them (apparently it adds sparkle to glassware) and as a consequence doesn't do the life of the pump assembly any favours. I use a very weak solution of Flash liquid cleaner - cleans off diesel film very well. (But see question on technical thread as to why paintwork is peeling around windscreen area ;-) )
Does anyone know what are the main ingredients of commercial screenwash?
P.S. Sorry to go even further off-topic
