Help....
This winter has not been too kind to the electrics on the car... if anyone could help with the below problems i would be very grateful..
1) Intermittant wipers not working. They stop half way and dont return to normal position. Work fine on continuous, but again if turned off half way through sweep they dont return.
2) Blower speed on 1 and 2 does not work - 3 and 4 do but is like driving in a gale when trying to demist car. 1 hasnt worked for months and then driving along today 2 has broken as well
3) Strange misfire until car has warmed up. Seems like chugging and running on 3 cylinders (expect electrical but dont know where to start replacing things). As soon as normal operating temperature (about 1 mile) it goes away and engine purrs as usual.
BTW car is 1997 214si with 101,000 miles.
Thanks

1) wiper motor fault
2) fan speed resistor fault (located behind glovebox)
3) could be HT lead/s fault or early stages of headgasket problems.

Not sure about No1.Not come across this on a rover
2 Is resistor pack on heater motor
3 Miss could be HT leads. As a rule I always change dizzy cap rotor arm and HT leads. All easy to change..While your at it replace spark plugs as well

As for Item 1:
I am certain this has the same electrical system as the late Rover 100 series and the wiper park is controlled by a relay in or behind the fuse box. From memory its made by Pektron (the one on swmbo's 111i was) and it failed.
Item 3: My first port of call would be the distributor cap, rotor arm and leads. Notorious on the 'k' series engine for failing. If they are originals they certainly need changing.
Hope this helps

Item 1: Robin may well be correct, but I had this once on an older car and it was the park microswitch in the motor gearbox that had failed.
|
point1: If this helps there is a clicking noise coming from behind the fusebox..very random so assume its the relay for the wipers.. a garage tried to charge me for a new motor but I am not convinced..will try the relay first and then get a motor from a scrappy...
Also as far as the resistor is concerned for the heater fan...how easy is it to change??
Things have got worse still as Monday evening the car wouldnt even turn over - £250 ligher and a new starter motor and everything is fine.....misfire when cold seems to have disappeared as had the plugs and engine flush done at the same time!!!
