Not that many of you were interested, but my 1993 335,000 mile Maestro van has finally gone. (To one of our mechanics - so not scrapped - yet!!)

& to prove the value you can get for just £1,600, try this..

97 R plate - soon to be VAN580Y reg.
117k
Omega 2.5 CDX Estate auto
Magic grey, totally original paintwork, a tiny rust scab below nearside rear door window, light crease in lower panel in this door too
2 careless tiny fag burns on drivers carpet-ashtray unused
All the toys - climate, traction control, elctric roof with 101 settings, too many other functions on the dash.Stack CD in the boot.
5 NEW Michelin Pilot Primacy (oversized) 225/65 16 on very clean alloys. Just priced them @ £152 each corner.

Direct Metropolitan Police - Ex senior officers transport, NOT blues n twos, job, none ever fitted. So it's also been driven professionally & properly maintained, too!

Looks like mid twenties for consumption, I'll get that improved, once I'm used to it.

It's strange enough driving a car - let alone a BIG petrol engine.

A proper valet/detail clean has been done, be myself, so looks showroom fresh.Service & belted, found no surprises, either.

So, I'll keep you informed as to what it's like running a bargain car!!

Can't see why not - as his cherished reg. is Y-suffix, he's making the car look older than it is. It'd be changing from R-prefix to Y-prefix that they wouldn't allow.

Just ignore me . Should have noticed it was 97 motor.

Bit of an upgrade that VB, hope it does you proud.

I spotted something in a similar vein on the Autotrader website earlier, ex Met Omega Estate 3.0 MV6 tinyurl.com/6yvo7
Not quite as much of a bargain as yours and probably had a bit of a thrashing for its 79k as a training vehicle but neverthelsss a lot of car for the money (too much money I know!) I'd love to know what they paid at auction to buy it in.
Isn't it odd how it's got police 'written all over it' even though it hasn't literally.

In that red and with London plates, it's almost certainly ex-diplomatic protection squad, which spends most of its time pootling around central London with the occasional blues and twos escapade. More of a lowish mileage taxi lifestyle than typical cop car.

Diplomatic Protection colour sprung to mind when I saw the picture initially but the ad does say 'ex pursuit training vehicle' which is obviously not quite as desirable!

Vansboy I?ve certainly been interested in the onrunning saga of your long running Maestro van.
My wife has a 93 Maestro from new with the same Perkins engine but with a Turbo. Only done 82,000 so hardly ran in yet compared to yours.
Apart from 5K oil changes and normal filters etc nothing has been virtually touched apart from a new alternator and exhaust and has been the most reliable motor we have ever had.
Can you tell me something about the history of yours. How many cambelts and have you ever had to replace injectors or adjust tappets etc.
335,000 miles from a motor which has done well in our forum for being voted as one of the worst vehicles ever owned.
I have a Vectra 2.0TDI which has a great engine but would still prefer the Perkins engine which has no electronic wizardry attached to the engine and any garage could tackle anything on it. Not that much is likely too.
Keep your eye on that mechanic and see what he runs it up to?

Alvin, glad I'm not the only one who appreciates Maestro!!

In fact, the number of buyers that used to come into our yard, wanting an Escort van & going out in a Maestro, surprised plenty of our competitors. (As boasted previously, I was known as KING of The Maestro vans, in auctions around & about the country!! I've sold dozens!!

The van began life as a water sample collection vehicle, with Anglian Water - so had a VERY light start for it's life, as a working vehicle. We got it just under 3 yrs old.£1700 + vat.

Mine had a turbo/power steering engine from H plate Montego, which itself had covered 110k, fitted at around 275k. So, considering we bought it at 110k, not bad going.

I've passed the full history to the mechanic, but other things included, gearbox & clutch around 150k, rad - punctured on M1 - you couldn't have shot .22 rifle more precisely, to get a hole in the fins, through the grill, 2 alternators, discs n pads a couple of times, 1 exhaust, & 3k oil changes. ! belt on original engine, 1 on second engine. They don't break!! NEVER had one go!!

The injectors were better after H reg, 2 stage, so a bit quieter. You might benifit from them being cleaned & serviced, if you're getting a bit smokey.

& thats about it, 45mpg average & a third of the time towing, too!!

Inside I fitted seats from Montego, for the better support, another carpet,(bright red, from n MG)a over the carpet for sound deadening, even had Vanden Plas veneer door cappings & chrome handles outside!! Good Rover stereo & my Trafficmaster were in there too. quality racking & lined in the loadspace was all worth doing, to keep things tidy.

Best £1700 ever spent!!

& still most comfortable vehicle, I've ever riden in!!
