Hi All,

Does anyone know who makes the engine for the Citreon Berlingo 1.9D van? It's on a Y plate. Also, anyone know the manufacturer of the injection pump?!

Many thanks in advance for your help.

What's on your motoring related Christmas lists this year then?

Mine:

New VW Mudflaps for Polo, preferably with some way of permanently injuring the next person who steals them. (Alternatively a new house with garage, but that might be stretching Santa's budget a bit.)

Tiny pink twinkly lights for use somewhere on the car - maybe on the dashboard like Kit from nightrider. (I *might* be joking.)

Richard Hammond in a little Stocking, minus wife and kids.

Polo himself will be getting his 80,000 mile service, door lock and window sorted and MOT for Christmas, lucky boy!

I happened to notice one of those on a Golf that pulled right out in front of me this morning. Nothing too unusual in that but we subsequently both joined a stretch of motorway and the Golf headed out into the outside lane and then blasted off at probably 90 to 95 mph, with the worlds skinniest looking rear tyre. I was expecting it to hurtle into the central reservation at any moment. What is the max speed these things are supposed to be good for ? Read more

Can't believe I missed a positive reason for fitting space savers, yesterday! Volvo do a very natty active subwoofer that sits on the top of the spare wheel for the V70 (and I believe S60 and S80), so long as the spare wheel is the space saver. The standard Dolby surround system is excellent, and the Premium upgrade that I have even more impressive, but when adjusted for subtlety, the subwoofer (which I don't have but which I have heard) gives a perfect amount of additional musical weight.

Father Christmas is already bringing me the BSR engine tuning software I wrote about earlier, and sat nav, so I think the subwoofer is unfortunately going to have to wait. :-(

Being hit by an apple core thrown from a passing car
when you are out for a quiet country walk is no
joke. Don't forget that at the point at which it leaves
the car, the apple core is travelling at the same speed
as the car!!

Some years ago I was walking along a main road in Rochester late at night. As a car passed from behind I felt something brush my arm. There was an egg splattered on the pavement. This was a deliberate attempt to make a mess of someone for fun. Thankfully it missed me, but no doubt these idiots did hit some people. What is worse is that they were out in a car.

A few months back I met a young lad in a chip shop who thought it was funny to drive arround throwing eggs in south east London. When I recounted the above tale he realised how stupid it was. All I can hope for is he stopped his friends as well. So it is possible that young drivers think this is part of their growing up ritual.

Returning to the rubbish theme I favour the front footwell, I will never throw anything out of the window. On the rare occasions I have any fast food, it is eaten whilst parked (if no restaurant) and the rubbish is then deposited in bins provided.

Keeping our country tidy only takes a little care and effort.

Mr Tickle

I am in the process of changing my car and was surprised when I contacted my insurer today to arrange a cover note. The insurer wanted to know not only what day I was changing the car, but also the exact time - I was warned that this was important and if I was incorrect I would not be covered (horrible image of being delayed en route to collect new car and finding myself driving without insurance, or being unable to drive old car to dealer to collect replacement). I've never encountered this before, is it usual? The sting in the tail came when I was told it would cost a further £219 to insure the car for the remaining 5 months of the existing policy's life. They are, needless to say, my former insurer. Read more

It does have to be done from a specific time. However, it is unusual for them to insist on a total changeover at that time - a little overlap is usual.

I presume that you were dealing with an administrator.

As a general rule with insurance; if you don't like/trust/believe something you are told then insist on it being referred to the claims assessor or underwriter as appropriate.

You will find that often you will get a reply which, whilst similar in principle, results in quite a different situation.

Would you ask the receptionist at the hospital about the intricacies of your medical treatment ?

I have a company car which is a three year old 150 bhp diesel golf gti with 108 k on the clock. It was serviced about three weeks ago and about two weeks later a shuddering noise developed which transpired to be a broken camshaft. The dealer wanted to replace the engine but VW finance only agreed to fix the broken camshaft which is understandable given that there is such high mileage and that the contract expires in March! Would anyone advise me whether it would not be a good idea to buy this car when the contract comes up in March even if the price is good and can anyone suggest a good price to accept it at please!

Anybody know what the towing capacity is of a 325i and 320i BMW tourers, E30 models approx. 1988-1992 Read more

PhilW

I can only find reference to 1996 models on
www.clicreports.co.uk/

kerbweights are 325 1535kg 85% therefore = 1304 kg
320 1505 1279 kg

Generally reckoned that 85% of kerbweight is "safest" but many tow up to 100%. Best not to exceed 100% though I don't think it is "the law"
Manufacturers maximum towing weights are 1800kg and 1700kg

Hi,

My girlfriends Rover 214 has always been serviced every 12,000 at the dealer from new, however i've decided to do it myself since the pigs ear they made of the last service!

As a result the car is using around a litre of oil every 2,500 miles and was wondering what oil to use. I have always specified magnatec but have no confidence that is what they used!! Is there anything that may reduce the consumption as magnatec is quite expensive to burn at that rate..

Also, is there anything specific I should pay attention to apart from the usual. BTW car is 1997 with 100,000 miles.

Thanks Read more

The info in the link posted by Dynamic Dave works well and costs absolutely nothing...assuming you don't have to actually buy a 5inch length of electrical wire to short the pins. I used one of the probe leads from my multi tester so basically anything that conducts current should work (bent coat hanger?).

If you search about on the net a bit more you will find various write-ups on the procedure, including pics that identify which pins you need to short.
