Pulling out of a side Road onto the Eastern Avenue at Newbury Park (Nr the Avenue Pub) I saw an empty dual carriageway to my right, but the s*** C***** about 250 yards away flashed although no car passed by. Keith S, I'll back your rant up 100%, and add my own!

As someone else who has spent time working at the roadside I'll reiterate what an uncomfortable and perilous place it is.

The temporary speed limits are there for a very good reason; so that people like Keith and myself and many others can go home safely to our families at the end of a shift. That is not being over dramatic, the slipstream effect from a speeding car, or worse an HGV, is positively frightening and can really be life threatening in certain situations.

If the individual concerned feels that his/her extra couple of minutes saved is so important then I hope you won't mind me saying that I regard my life important enough to wish that he racks up the required 12 points for a ban as quickly as possible. Personally I would like to see speeding through temporary restrictions put in place for the protection of the workforce can a penalty of an immediate one month ban, that is how strongly I feel about it. After all there are plenty of signs warning of the reasons for the restriction and the fact that cameras are present, if they are not noticed then what else is that driver not noticing? If someone still speeds through then I must assume that they really do not care about my safety and any grief they could cause my wife and children, so please don't expect sympathy from this quarter.

To all those who do slow down and give road workers a wide berth, thank you, it really is appreciated.

The sale of goods act applys if I buy a car from a trader, (obviously depending on age and price).

Presumably it still applys even for the 'part exchange / cheapies' they've got round the back.

However the Sale Of Goods Act doesn't apply to auctions, so i'm not covered if I buy from Manheim (obviously).

But what if I buy a car from a trader on Ebay? Presumably i've bought a car at auction and hence am not covered.

Thanks

I re-open this to mention that I looked at an e-bay car a
while ago:

Description:

Very good condition for mileage, only one previous owner (company) and presumed regularly serviced although minimal history. Runs like a dream, this is the electronic/electric injected model, drives like a petrol, goes like a train! No marks on body, one LX badge missing on NSF wing and 3 very small marks on front seats ( 2/3mm.) Interior grey and otherwise immaculate.

My observations:

Many marks on the body, especially to the door edges, and flat panels. The interior is in very poor condition indeed; many marks, oily splodges, and small tears here and there. The carpet is parting company with the trim in several places. Uneven tyre wear (two tyres ought to be changed now, for safety/legality, and the spare as well). The dash is filthy. The whole interior smells of oil. The air-con is not working properly. Where the exhaust pipe rear section has been missing, smuts and filth from the exhaust has got inside the lenses, blackening them. The door seals have some damage to them. There have been lots of "knocks" to the underneath, which have damaged the underside of the front bumper, and there is damage to the underneath where the car has been incorrectly jacked. The plastic mud-guard (lining) inside the n/s front wing is shattered and needs replacement. The corrugated plastic "pipes" which hold the wiring loom are broken in several places. Worryingly, the intercooler is leaking oil. There is an oil leak from the back of the engine or gearbox somewhere, evidenced by oil running along the o/s front suspension frame, which looks like an engine oil leak hopefully, as it's black. There is considerable wear to the front discs, which need to be replaced. Stone chip in windscreen (not MOT failure).

Happy Blue!

I know its last minute, as I am leaving at 5:15am Tuesday morning, but I'm wondering about the route. The AA, RAC and Multimap.com route finders all suggest the same route which is up the M6,M74 then go via the east of Glasgow on a series of dual carriageways and motorways and then onto the A9 and into Perth.

I wonder if the A702 via Edinburgh and over the Forth Road Bridge is any better?

Thanks in anticipation.

PS the weather is meant to be fine all day.

Happy Blue!

Got back in one day and one piece. It's lovely driving up north as there is little traffic and 530 miles was dead easy. Imagine doing Manchester to London return and then back to Milton Keynes in one day! Cruise control makes it so easy and the whole trip including about 3 and 1/2 hours in Perth was done in just under 12 hours.

Hopefully no flashes from cameras, but saw a mobile unit over the M74 going south. Cruise set on 85mph -oops - hopefully saw it in time...............

First major run in my new (to me) Subaru Forester Turbo Auto. Lovely cruiser although certainly thirsty 26mpg :-( Great ride though - nice high profile tyres makes going over speed bumps a doddle. The non-turbo version is even better at that, but the torque of the Turbo is great for overtaking lorries on two-lane stretches.

Question pug 306 gearbox
306xl

I was recently told that my 95, M reg, 1.4, 306 xl needed a new gearbox. I have found one with engine, but it is from a 1.4, P reg 97 version. Does anyone know if this would be compatible or not with my own 306, if i could do a straight swap?
Thanks

Am I missing something? On our new shape Megane, the doors lock when one gets above 5mph and unlock when one is below it. To me it's the wrong way around - I would have thought it would be safer to have the doors locked whilst stationary incase of car jacking?
Maybe I am overlooking the obvious? Read more

oh dear, sensible question answered with an irelevant rant.

just spent a weekend in a hired new top of range ford fiesta, to say I am staggered would be to put it mildly

pedals that are SOOOOOOOO far from the floor, come on proper pedal spacing doesn't cost anything

speakers that are so tinny, come on decent pioneer speakers are so cheap, why bother putting this rubbish in

stereo straight from the Alan Sugar school of design

terrible gear change, like driving a bus

seats hurt

didn't feel secure on the road

truly a victory of marketing over car quality, I am appalled that they think these things are acceptable

I've held back from posting on this one as I know for a fact I will be accused of pro-Ford bias, I haven't been posting much lately but most of the older regulars may remember my previous name, and also the fact that I work for Ford, but here goes anyway! :-)

The pedals too close together? They're much better spaced than many of the other small cars that I have driven, cars like the Saxo, Punto and Clio cannot really compete, and whilst I don't remeber it being much worse, I don't recall that the Corsa was much better than the Fiesta either. I'm afraid that in a small car the pedals are bound to be closer together than in a larger car.

The bit that I really can't understand though is the comments about the car's handling, the Fiesta is one of the best standard small cars on the road, without question, I would imagine that most people who have driven them would back that up. I know I used to find that mine coped very well at high speeds on the twisty roads, in fact it put many other cars to shame.

As for the stereo, no, it isn't the sweetest sounding system in the world, but it's on a par with the competition, I reckon they've got it right with the design as well, not many customers want rows of flashing lights and countless buttons on their stereos. :-)

So there you go, accuse me of blatant pro-Ford bias if you like, but I don't believe I am, I reckon my comments are fairly accurate.

My T Reg Mazda 323 has some blemishes around the rear bumper and rear offside wheel - couple of deep scratches, grazes and marks accumulated over the last 5 years (I've owned the car for a year). A local, and recommended, body shop place will respray the bumper and rear three-quarter panel for £245. This seems like a lot of money so I'm wondering (a) whether it's worth getting it done on a car this age and (b) whether there is anyone cheaper (in or around Sheffield) who would do a good job. I'm planning on keeping the car for another couple of years.

Any insights or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sounds like it might be £240 well spent, so long as they do a good job.

Thanks again

Question Chipping etc
cheddar

Hi, I have rather tentatively been researching the idea of chipping my '02 Mondeo Ghia X TDCi, it certainly goes well enough however the idea of a significantly more performance for a few hundred quid appeals.

I have had a look at the archives on the diesel car website and Superchips and Bromleys/Tunit both quote 130 TDCi's as producing 145 - 150bhp as standard, in the case of Tunit they tested an '02 Ghia Estate TDCi and an X-Type 2.0d which produced 148 and 147 bhp respectively before they touched them. Likewise an Audi A4 TDi 130 Quattro tested at 147bhp in standard form, this being more than the 2WD TDi 130's, the comment is that the Quattro ECU is set differently to the 2WD by the factory. However a Rover 75CDT tested at 116bhp, spot on stanadrd spec.

Makes me wonder how many cars are infact more powerful than that quoted by the manufacturer.

Also, my car has 83k (mainly motorway miles) on the clock though is in good order, can anyone say from experience whether I am likely to encounter any mileage related problems if I were to go down the chipping route.

It might be for a similar reason to that given to me by the AA as to why they couldn't cover it at all - I live in NI and while both elephant and the AA sell car insurance here, there will be number of companies they broker for in GB which do not operate in Northern Ireland.
By the way, I would still ask your insurer (elephant, I take it?) to record the fact that you have informed them of the modifications and that your insurance is unaffected. I would also ask them to confirm it in writing. In fact, it might be a good idea to have a good look at the small print in your policy before contacting them, to see if it specifies anything about modifications.
It would appear from comments I've read elsewhere that it is indeed possible for an ECU upgrade to be detected, if the insurance company wants to find it. In the event of your having to make a claim, they could try to use the fact that the mod is there, yet not recorded in your policy details, as an excuse not to pay out - even though you have informed them!

Hi Guys
My r-reg fiesta with endura e- engine developed a similar problem, it started to stall when approacing junctions (when the clutch is depresed), took it to Ford garage and they replaced HEGO sensor, worked fine for two months but the problem came back so had to take it back, they were unable to find any fault so they recalibrated the engine and updated the software. Brought it back on fiday unfortunately nothing improved the probem is still there so I have to take it back again. It has costed me £275.00 already and funny thing is it all started after I got it MOT'ed. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Sounds like your ECU is a bit confused!
Take off the battery for about ten minutes. Connect the battery up again. Start the engine, leave it idiling for about 20 minutes and drive it slowly for about 5 miles. Let me know if this works.
