We need a new lwb hi-top van to tow the rally car (about £2-3k)
(our F reg Ducato has finally died)
Anyone got any experiences of
Ducato/Boxer/Citroen equivalent
Iveco Daily
Transit
Any other ideas?
Any web sites which give specs of vans?

I'm looking for something really cheap (few hundred quid). To mess around with on road rallies, use for club auto tests, scatters etc. Then throw away after 12 months or sooner if I bend it.
Should be small and powerful and cheap to buy / easyish to get bits for.
Ok the ideas so far are ;
309 Gti (easier to find than 205)
Metro gti
ZX 16v
Jetta gti (or whatever it was called)
What would you suggest?

Watch out with 309 GTi Mi16 conversion cars- it is NOT an easy conversion to do IF it is done properly. The manifolds cause problems. You really need a to use a custom exhaust manifold. Lots of people fit these engines, but dont put them in at the right angle, which can result in oil starvation when cornering etc.
Mi16 engine is capable of huge power, cams are very mild as standard so just changing these improve power noticeably. Big valve head, cams and throttle bodies will give enormous performance, but you would need new drive shafts.
Handle well, but once lowered and uprated, can suffer problems with understeer, hence the desire still for good 205's which dont have this problem.
Best to look for the best shell you can find and have the engine and gearbox rebuilt by a decent engine builder. Watch out there a loads of useless peugeot tuners.
Jetta 16v's are quick and quite easy to set up suspension wise, but big power increases are not al that easy, a ported 2 ltr with cams will give about 160-165bhp if your lucky. Standard 1.8 16v's can be tweaked around with (vernier pulley, exhaust cam used in the inlet, modded fuel pressure regulator) to give as much as 145bhp if you get a good one.
Anybody any Idea where I can get details / manual for this Car ( R reg)
The Haynes Manual 3453 does not cover the 1590 cc D series Honda engine
Think I have a duff thermostat but require confimation of removal/ replacement details
TIA

Sorry I can't help you with the thermostat query.
2 months ago I bought a P reg 416 Honda engined auto and it does about 30mpg on 10 mile runs on 'A' roads. I drive very gently with no hard accelerations.
This seems a bit low, would have expected about 35mpg. What does yours do ?? Any ideas what could be wrong please, if indeed you think it thirsty.
Did you get one of those CD-roms, was it good ??
Best wishes, Vinnie.
I need 2 weeks parking at or near Gatwick from 17 Dec to 1 Jan. Quotes are coming in at £80 odd. Before I go for it, has anyone found any better options (apart from public transport), or dodges? Read more
I don't know where you live AN Other but Gatwick Express is much more expensive than the local trains although faster and with more luggage room.
If you are coming from London Victoria use the Connex services to Brighton or Littlehampton , a couple only stop at East Croydon and Gatwick and they are cheaper. Try to avoid the rush hour 4 pm on ex Victoria with the City Nigels yammering incessantly on their mobiles....drives me insane.
Once again check availability of services if you are returning 1st January.
.... is a term sometimes used in ads for secondhand cars to indicate that the engine's not knackered. But with service intervals of 10,000 miles or more these days surely the oil cannot possibly retain anything like as much of the protective qualities needed from service to service.
I prefer an engine to use some oil and require several top ups between services. Then I know that at least some of the lubricant will be 'fresh'. Discuss... Read more
Andrew,
I think that if you have an engine which is worn to the extent where a large volume of products of combustion are adding to the sump volume, then you will also have an engine which tends to burn more oil. Perhaps it is possibly to acheive this mysterious balance?

With all this talk of 4x4s at the moment, does anybody know why they all seem to have two sets of rear lights? Read more
I raised this question a few years ago when I bought a Shogun. I was told by HJ that there is legislaton regarding open rear doors and visibility of both rear lights. I put Pajero lights on mine, which in addition to the bumper mounted ,give (I feel) vastly improved visibility when viewed from the rear.
hi im after a picasso mayber 4 -5 years old (hdi)
its dawned on me for what id like to spend i could get a newer one form the auction (motabillity)
(this doesnt frighten me as it wont be boy racered)
does anyone have any experience of how much they go for ni an auction?
or how i can find out auction prices

It's only pennies in comparison to what you'd pay a dealer.
Saves lots of phone calls to the auctions, doing it this way.
& lots of wasted journeys, to auction centres, that might not have what you want!!
TRY IT!!

The wife's '54 reg. Ibiza 1.2 5 door is a great car. However, the brakes seem to be either on or off with nothing much in between. Slowing down for speed humps is a nightmare as I usually put everyone through the 'screen. Can this be rectified somehow or do we have to 'live with it'? The car I test drove seemed ok.

Sincere thanks to all that have responded. Also agree with vista1100 re. steering being being very 'light'.
We will try and get used to it before taking it to the dealer. However, when we do, Aprilia and NumberCruncher's comments about brake servo valve could prove useful!
Finally, did anyone see my 15 mins of fame in Novembers What Car? on page 137 (Mis-sold Seat)? Just shows that a quick, confident response quoting Sale of Goods Act means that you CAN successfully reject a new car.
Praise must go to Seat for the way this was dealt with.
Thanks again for help & comments.
As stated - hit from behind while stationary at some lights and impact pushed me into the car in front.
Happy to let insurance companies sort it out but just wondered? - am giving up the company car soon so want to avoid any liability claims against me. Read more
I do what you do with the brake lights to act
as a warning, just with the additional safety of having the
hand-brake on already as well. Imagine the scenario of you being
the first car stopped at a zebra crossing.
I'm sure you are aware of this now and humble apologies
for sounding like a "benefit of hindsight" smug git

No worries - a smart idea which I will take up :o)
Couple of months ago my rover started misbehaving. It would often idle steadily at 2000 or 3000 rpm and kept cutting out when pulling away. when idling like this it will often correct itself after a while or if I blip the trotle the revs will rise then drop back to normal.
It went in for its MOT and they looked at the ECU which reported that the temperature sensor was faulty. They claimed that this is a common false reading so voided the error. They found that the stepper settings were wrong so adjusted them.
All seemed fine for about a month when it started playing up again with the same problems. Below are some examples of the things it does.
On the motorway this morning it was holding a steady 60-65mph with my foot off the throtle, pressing the clutch pedal revealed that it was idling at just below 3000 rpm. Often when driving at 30 in 5th I can feel the car trying to accelerate as it is idling too fast.
On a damp misty morning the other day it cut out about 5 times during a journey of about 40 mins. One of these was when I was driving down a hill. Once it stalls it normally takes quite a few minutes of turning it over to restart it.
The symptoms don't tend to present themselves until after driving for 5 or so minutes and some days it can behave normally.
When it is misbehaving if you blip the throtle the revs will just die then recover or stall.
I am after some ideas of what could be the problem. I am sure that if I take it back to the garage they will not be able to re-create the problem and may not find the cause. It has been suggested to me that it might be moisture getting into the HT leads. The car c1997 with 82k miles.
Sorry for the long post. I look forward to your thoughts.
cheers

Could be fuel supply, perhaps due to dirt in the tank or a fuel filter requiring replacement.
We used to clear such faults by coasting, revving the engine hard and then letting in the clutch sharply whilst in a low gear.

What you really meant to say was a new secondhand/pre-used/old van....:-)
